Type: HillHeight: 3500 Feet above MSL (Approx)Grade: Medium (5. hrs trek)Base Village: Khandas----------------------------------------------------------------------------Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle. The Maharashtra Government has also declared it a Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km's), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Jungle Fowl, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufa indica elphinstone), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.-------------------------------------------------------------Shiva Temple: The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the Hemad Panthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high "Deepmala" or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.Gupt Bhimashankar : There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the "water sculpted" "Shiva Linga" under this waterfall. This is called the Gupt Bhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.Nagphani : We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The rout... Read more

Kalsubai is the highest peak of the Sahyadris in Maharashtra.

Kalsubai is situated in Ahmadnagar district at approximately 25-30 Km. South-East of Igatpuri. At the summit is a small temple of Kalsubai, which can seat just three people. .
SAJJANGAD: Samarth Ramdas lived for long time @ Sajjangad, a small hillock near Satara. He breathed his last here and devotees worship his mausoleum here. This is an important centre of worship for the Ramdasi sect. Ramdas swami remains an inspiration for the technique he developed in infusing Nationalism and Dharmic devotion among ordinary people across the country by his concept of Hanuman temple, akhaada and a Paathashaalain every village. His emphasis on Rashtra chintana along with spiritualsadhana is more relevant today than it was anytime before.

KALYANGAD: is also known as Nandgiri fort. This fort was built by king Bhoj-II of Shilahar dynasty as mentioned in the copper plate inscription found in Satara. This fort appears to be built in between 1178 to 1209. It appears from many copper plate inscriptions of Shilahar kings that they gave many donations to Jain people. It has been proved that this fort is built by Shilahar Kings, as many statues of Lord Parshvanath are found in the cave on Kalyangad. In 1673 Shivaji Maharaj conquered Satara and surrounding regions. Kalyangad became a part of his territory. After Shivaji, the administration of Kalyangad went into the hands of Pratinidhis (representatives). Later, conflicts arose between Peshvas and Pratinidhis. The fort was taken over by Peshwa. In 1818 general Prisler brought this fort under British control.

Hello Wanderers,
We are glad to invite you for a Trek to Harihar fort(Harshagad) on 7th September, 2014.

harihar

General Information:
The fort of Harihar, lying on Trimbak range, was of significant importance in earlier periods, as there used to be a route crossing this range connecting Maharashtra to Gujarat.Trimbak range has spreaded its arms to the north of Igatpuri and west of Nasik. It is divided mainly in two parts, with forts of Basgad, Utvad, hill of Fani, Harihar and Trimbakgad on one part while the forts of Anjaneri and Hargad on the other. Vaitarna is the main river in this region. But due to the one – sided slope of Sahyadri, the water flows away from this region. There is an absolute shortage of water from January to March in this region. The fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village.
