The rains along with the month of Shravan are one of the best times to go to Bhimashankar, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. But at the same time the pilgrimage is crowded with people who come to visit the Shiva Temple. To avoid this crowd, we have decided to head to Bhimashankar just before the Shravan starts.

We invite you all for the overnight trek to Bhimashankar via adventurous route of Nisanichi Waat (Shidi Ghat) on 19th & 20th July 2014.

About Bhimashankar:

Type: Pilgrimage
Height: 3500 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Medium
Region: Karjat

A beautiful temple of Lord Shiva at Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyothirlinga in India. After getting angry, Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura and heat generated during the war caused the origin of river Bhima thus the name Bhimashankar. The entire region is a thick forest which is home for a state animal - Indian Gaint Squirrell, also known as 'Shekru'. The topmost point is known as Nagphani.

Matheran: The climate of Matheran is very cool. The most unforgettable things about Matheran are deep forest and the waterfalls nearby, especially in rainy season. The beauty of the hill station gets doubled in monsoon. Matheran is truly 'The Best Hill Station in Maharashtra.

Matheran is most splendid hill station in Maharashtra; it covers an area of 8 square kilometers in Sahyadris. This lovely spot was discovered in 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the collector of Thane district. Garbett point is located on South-west side of Matheran with grand view of the plateau. Descend via Sunset point leads to Dodhani village on Panvel side.

History :
The trail to One tree hill from Ambewadi is also called the Shivaji ladder route. Midway through the trail near the end of the thick forest, you come across a mass of boulders and rocks into which the trail disappears. This is known as Shivaji Steps or the Shivaji Ladder. According to local legend, Shivaji rode up this route on horseback. From here, it’s 500m to the top, up a stream bed that’s dry except during the monsoon.

Rules and regulations.

Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury andabsolute comfort then we can hardly help them. ;)
Offbeat sahyadri believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our offbeater friends to understand group dynamics and leave athome their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself becomes unforgettable! Trust us on this.

Now some basic codes.

Respect nature.
1)    Absofreakinglutely no littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throwgarbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses? J.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
2)    Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!
3)    Remember, the mountain has a mind of his own. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true.

With fellow trekkers.
1)    It is fun to interact and get to know people from different walks of life. Feel free to take the opportunity   to expand your social circles.
2)    Share water and food. Nothing else is a better ice breaker than being offered water or a bite of your sandwich!
3)    Care for your fellow trekkers. It is not nice to be self centered and unamicable.

For your own safety
1)    The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2)    Simply put, stay with the group. Do not rush far too ahead or lag too behind. We understand that everyone has a different stamina and we try to keep the group bound together.
3)    Do not wander off from the main trail. Whenever there is no established trail, strictly stay with the group. Be within the sight of the person ahead of you and the one behind you. It helps.
4)    One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all offbeaters.
5)     Finally, the non arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited.

Regards,
Team OffBeat Sahyadri

Torna: Torna fort is amongst the tallest forts around Pune. A difficult trek the trek to Torna however is one of the most satisfying treks for a nature lover. A huge fort, Torna has seen many a war and has been in control of many rulers at different times. Though most parts of the Torna fort is in ruins the panoramic view the fort offers is well worth the climb up.

 (* Pics from Shreekumar Krishnan)

Torna fort is the first fort that Shivaji Maharaj captured and that too in his teens! Shivaji Maharaj further renamed it as Torna. Torna fort is also called Prachandgad. One of the tallest forts around Pune Torna fort also is the only fort that Aurangazeb captured in a real war!

The Torna Trek is a medium difficulty trek but the rewards of the toil is really fulfilling! The narrow tracks on the way up from Velhe the base village of Torna Trek leads to beautiful landscape. After monsoons which is the best season for the Torna trek the entire way would be laden with wild flowers. It's time to welcome the season by going a little far away from daily hustle bustle, boring potholes on roads, jam packed local trains and all chikchik-zigzig....

Centre of Centre for Environment Conservation India are pleased to welcome you all to enjoy monsoon with us on our 1st monsoon trek to Karnala fort on 13th July 2014.

About of Karnala Bird Sanctuary:
Karnala Bird Sanctuary located on the Mumbai-Pune Highway to Goa, just ten km from Panvel. Sanctuary is located at the base of the Karnala fort paradise for bird watchers. Karnala is a tiny sanctuary, barely 4.8 sq km, home to over 150 resident bird species and about 37 types of avian migrants.
Trek to Karnala is always, a pleasant surprise away from Mumbai's concrete jungle.
Trek to Karnala is one of the easy trek in Sahyadris, good for beginners to start with, we consider ourselves part of nature and we owe a lot to our mother nature.
