It is literally a forest on top of the hill (matheran means Mathe (head) and raan means forest). The dense forest covers, teeming bird life, long walks, flora and fauna which makes this an all-time favorite. The best part is that it is pollution-free as no vehicles are allowed on the hill station.
While trekking up to Matheran hill from chowk village, it is a long flat walk and then steep ascend which in turn also have some risky rock patches. But the best thing is that there are three ladders fixed on those patches. First two ladders are made up of iron while other one is of wood and bamboo. According to locals, Shivaji Maharaj rode up this route on horseback. Locals also call this route as Shivaji Ladder route.

About:
Amidst the lush green vegetation surrounding the mountain ranges of Nakhind and Mhasmaal, Chanderi Fort emerges like a masterpiece crafted with nature’s best hands. Situated at a height of 2,330 ft, the hill fort, now in ruins, offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area as well as presents one of the toughest trek routes around Mumbai.Although worth mentioning as the jewel in the crown of forts in the district of Raigad, there is no significant history attached to this fort. Near the caves on the fort are visible some remnants of fortification. This is the only sign to designate Chanderi as a fort. Chanderi is famous for water streams and its difficult route. In monsoon route gets thrilling with water flow and tricky.
History:
In May 1656 Shivaji Maharaj conquered all the territory up to kalyan-Bhivandi-rairi. This was when this fort came under the rule of Marathas. Lack of development, Low water storage areas, absence of significant constructions, limited facilities for people to stay and extremely difficult approach road seems to suggest that rather than a fort, this was possibly a military base.

SHIKHAR VEDH : One day trek to Asherigad on Saturday 19th July 2014

$
0
0
Dear All,
We, at SHIKHAR VEDH invite you all for a one day trek to Asherigad on Saturday 19th July 2014

Fort: Asheri Gad.
Height: 2000 feet
Range: Palghar.
District: Thane
Level: Medium

History mentions that Bhojraj, a descendant of the Shilahar Dynasty built this fort. Hence it can be assumed that this fort is at least 800 years old. The Portuguese rebuilt this fort after they captured it during their rule. In 1737, Peshwa won this fort during his campaign of the Konkan and in 1818 this fort came under the British rule.

Fascinating Spots :On the plains and on the right of the path one can see quite many remnants of settlements. One can also see quite many foundations with gutters cut in them. These could be to collect the rainwater during the rainy season or to lead away the overflow. The cave on the top is of medium size and having a large cave opening. But it has been carved into the rocks in such a way that the stray wind or the cold does not enter in. The back portion of the cave is very uneven. However, there are platforms made both outside and inside for the guards to take rest. The two hibiscus bushes outside the cave entrance point to the fact that rituals might have been conducted regularly by the villagers somewhere in the past. On left side of the top portion of the cave, there is a built in square water tank. There is a half buried cannon in this tank. There are two more half completed tanks here. From the top plateau, one can see the fort of Kohoj to the South West. One can also see the natural human form on the fort with the help of binoculars. Going ahead on the path one can see a huge depression the rock face and a bastion.

Trail: Chinchoti waterfall
Region: Vasai
Grade: Easy
Expense: INR 200 for members and INR 240 for non members

About Chinchoti waterfall:
Chinchoti falls are generally visited by picnickers through Kaman village on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. Very few people know the jungle path through Tungareshwar. In fact there are two jungle routes meeting at different spots near Chinchoti waterfalls. The track is narrow jungle path and one can easily get lost without the help of escorts. The sound of the rains drops and orchestra of insects gives an eerie but adventurous feeling throughout this trek. You hear sound of watercourses trundling down rock faces chatting at a high frequency before it comes in your view. This is the midpoint of the trek to Chinchoti. From this point you will be crossing the stream on few occasions to reach the main waterfall. The journey is a thrilling experience and the waterfall is a beauty. The memories of the 125 feet magnificent waterfall will be permanently etched on your mind.

The expense includes transport from Naigaon to Naigaon, breakfast/snacks, tea/coffee and YHAI expertise for the trek. Lunch is not included and has to be carried by the participants. Any expense other than mentioned is to be borne by the participants.

*Please note that due to unexpected delay of monsoons, there is no guarantee that the waterfall depicted in the picture is what we might get to see.

Little about the Trek:

Type:One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India            Height: 3250 feet above sea level- approx

Grade:Difficult but Easy                                  Base Village: Khandas, Nanadgaon

Places to See:

Lord Shiva Temple: Bhimashankar Temple is located in the village of Bhorgiri 50 km North West of Khed, near Pune. There is a beautiful temple of Lord Shiva which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. It is a modest yet graceful temple and it dates back to mid 18th century. The shikhara of the temple was built by Nana Phadnavis. This temple is closely associated with the legend of Shiva slaying the demon Tripurasura associated with the invincible flying citadels Tripuras. Shiva is said to have taken abode in the Bhima form, upon the request of the Gods, on the crest of the Sahyadri hills, and the sweat that poured forth from his body after the battle is said to have formed the Bhimarathi River. Bhimashankar is also the source of the Bhima River, which flows south east and merges with the Krishna River near Raichur.A big size bell in Hemadpanthi structure: Built by Nana Phadnavis is also a feature of Bhimashankar.

Other equally important places: Hanuman Lake, Gupt Bhimashankar, Sakshi Vinayak,Origin of River Bhima, Nag Phani from where one can see the view of the Peth fort and Padar, Bombay Point, and lot more.Bhimashankaris conserved forest area and wildlife sanctuary where a variety of birds, animals, flowers, plants can be seen. A rare animal "Shekru" can be found in deep woods. Bhimashankar is worth visited for jungle lovers and trekkers as well as for pilgrims.

Routes to Bhimashankar:There are two routes to Bhimashankar from the base village of Khandas, which are most popular among trekkers. 1. Ganesh Ghat: There is a bridge around 2 km from Khandas, and the track going to the right from the bridge is the Ganesh Ghat route. This is the easiest and the longest route to Bhimashankar. Within an hour of trekking along this route you will reach a Ganesh temple. The route ahead will take around 3 hours until you reach the plateau of Bhimashankar, there is a small pond dug out in the ground called 'Hanuman Tal'. This trek is five hours to six hours long.2. ShidiGhat(ladder Route):  This one is a shorter route, but difficult especially in the monsoons. The route gets its name from the ladders placed on the steepest parts. The route going to the left of the bridge (mentioned in Ganesh Ghat) goes to the village. On moving ahead you will reach a well, take a left from there to Shidi Ghat. Within the first two hours of climbing you will pass three ladders. You will reach a junction where both the routes - Ganesh ghat and Shidi – merge. There are many huts providing food and tea in middle of trek route. A further 1 ½ hour trek takes us besides a pond. The road, which goes to the left from this pond, takes us to the temple.

Rules and regulations.
Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury and absolute comfort then we can hardly help them.

Sa-Hi Trekkers believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our Sa-hi friends to understand group dynamics and leave at home their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself become unforgettable! Trust us on this.
Now some basic codes:
Respect nature.
1) No littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throw garbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses?
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!
2) Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!
3) Remember, the mountain has own mind. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true. Never take nature as granted.
For your own safety
1) The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2) One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all Sahi Trekkers.
3) Finally, the non-arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during trek.

Safety measure is to be followed on strict basis, anybody not following will be discarded on the spot.
