Shikhar Vedh :: 1 day Trek to Talgad + Kuda Caves + Ghosalgad forts on Saturday 21 June 2014

Dear All,

We @ Shikhar Vedh has arranged 1 day Trek to Talgad + Kuda Caves +
Ghosalgad forts in Raigad region on Saturday 21 June 2014...

Hope to c u on trek :-)

Details r as follows

Brief Introduction about Talgad / Ghosalgad:

Height:~ 1000 feet/1200 feet

Grade: Easy /Easy

Time:~ Max.30 min frm Tala village/Max.45 min frm Ghosal

Location:Roha, Raigad

Talgad :
A fortified monument on the southern bank of Malti creek, the Tala fort
lies east west at a height of 1000 feet above the sea level in Tala town in
Maharashtra. The fort is separated from the rest of the hill by a wide gap.
This protected monument of 4th century was built during the reign of Bhoja
Raja and was used as a watch on the beautiful Rajpuri stream. Tala fort is
a very good example for the artistic talents of the then generation. The
bottom of the hill in which the fort situates is surrounded by thick woody
forest. Once a center of prime importance, this marvelous construction
stands as the relic of its past glory.

Kuda Caves:
Kuda caves, famous for Buddhist caves. These rock cut caves are classic
example of Buddhist cave art and amazing for their architectural
excellence. These caves have two levels and the individual blocks are
smaller and are on the upper levels. The inscriptions on the caves are the
preaching of Buddha and his disciples. The interiors of the caves are
carved with stupas and a rock carved image of an elephant as the janitor is
inscribed on the front gate of the caves.
In many of the caves in Kuda hills, there are evidences to testify that
monks used them as dwelling places. The inscriptions, letters and paintings
in the Kuda hills shows that these caves are built in during first to sixth
centuary B.C. Set up on a hilly terrain, the Kuda caves give a magnificient
view of the valley below. This is a recommended place for those who are
having a keen interest in historical monuments and archeology.

Ghosalgad:
Approx 9 km south of Roha and 32 km east of Murud is a mountain which
arises majestically to the sky. A fort on the top of hill has been named
Ghosalgad after the village Ghosala below. The fort was used as look out
post for those ruling over Murud.

As the base village Ghosal is at a considerable height, a hike to the fort
from the base is not much and there is an easy path to the top. A water
pond named Wajta Haud, remnants of watch tower, fortified wall, temple of
Bhavani and Ganapati, water cisterns etc. can be seen atop. A beautiful
view of base village Ghosala, Murud creek and Talagad can be seen from the
top.

"Wild Rangers" tour to Magnificent DudhSagar Water Fall & Gokak Water Fall on 26-28 Jul 2014

Dear Rangers
"Wild Rangers" have arranged the tour to Magnificent DudhSagar Water Fall & Gokak Water Fall on 26-28 Jul 2014

Dudh Sagar Waterfall
The magnificent Dudhsagar Waterfall is perched in the high peaks of the Western Ghats and is a sight to behold especially in the monsoons when it is in full and furious flow. From a distance, the waterfall appears like streams of milk rushing down the mountainside. The exhuberent and spectacular waterfall is located in the Sanguem taluka.

Measuring a mighty 600m from head to foot, this waterfall on the Goa-Karnataka border, attracts a steady stream of visitors from the coast into the rugged Western Ghats. After pouring across the Deccan plateau, the headwaters of the Mandovi River form a foaming torrent that splits into three streams to cascade down a near-vertical cliff face into a deep green pool.

The Konkani name for the falls, which literally translated means "sea of milk", derives from clouds of milky foam which rises up at the bottom of the falls. Dudhsagar is set amidst breathtaking scenery overlooking a steep, crescent-shaped head of a valley carpeted with pristine tropical forest, that is only accessible on foot or by train.

Gokak Waterfall
The Gokak waterfall is located at a distance of 6 km from Gokak on the Ghataprabha River in the Belgaum district.

The Ghataprabha River separated from the Malaprabha river by the Belgaum hills flows through the black soil plains before it enters the rocky belt of Gokak.
After a long winding course, Ghataprabha River takes a leap of 170 ft over the sandstone cliff. The cliff is in a picturesque gorge of the Gokak valley and is in the shape of a horseshoe. Except the width and color of the water, the general characteristics of the fall, height, shape and speed look a lot like Niagara Falls on a smaller scale. The dull roar of the falls can be heard long before it attained.

There is a hanging bridge across the river, about 201 meters and its height above the bed rock is measuring about 14 meters. Only 30 people are allowed at a time inside the bridge

Girivihang Trekker's trek to Harihar & Kavnai Fort Sunday, June 29th 2014

$

Girivihang Trekker's is a non-profit making registered organisation.

Explore the adventures of mighty Harihar & Kavnai Fort with Girivihang Trekkers.

About Forts:-
Harihar :- Harihar fort is a hill fort and is also known as Harshgad or Harishgad or Harihargad. This fort lies in range called Upper Vaitarana range. It lies near Trimbak in the Nashik district of Maharashtra in India. Vaitarna is the main river in this region. This fort lies on a traingular rock with all the three sides vertical and is approachable only from one side i.e. through a 200 ft high rock cut staircase. The most fascinating aspect about this trek is the rock cut steps at an 80 degree vertical angle that one has to negotiate to enter the fort. Though it’s a vertical ladder, the steps are provided with groves for proper grip while ascending. Ascending and descending through this patch is a thrilling experience.

Kavnai :- The fort, which is said to have been built by the Moghals, was ceded to the Peshwa by the Nizam in virtue of a treaty concluded after the battle of Udgir (1760) When the Marathas were defeated at Trimbak in 1818, Kavnai, like Tringalvadi and fifteen other neighbouring forts, fell without a struggle to the British. [Blacker's Maratha War, 322 note 2.] Captain Briggs who visited it after its surrender found two houses at the foot of the hill where the garrison lived. The ascent was easy till the scarp was reached. The scarp, though not very high, was nearly perpendicular and was climbed by bad rock-cut steps. There was only one tolerable gate. The top of the fort was small with an ample water supply and good houses for the garrison.

Dear Rangers
"Wild Rangers" have arranged the tour to Magnificent DudhSagar Water Fall & Gokak Water Fall on 15-17 Aug 2014

Short info:
Malshej Ghat is a mountain pass in the Western Ghats range in the Thane district of MaharashtraIndia. The site is nestled in the lofty rugged hills of the Western Ghats.
A nice view of valleys is one of the major attractions here. The view from behind the MTDC resort is a must-see. It is also famous for dark woods and the animals inside. This animal includes tigers, leopards, rabbits and peacocks etc. But truly a famous place near Malshej Ghat is Khireshwar which is 2/3 km from rest house. Through Khireshwar village, one can visit the famous Harishchandragadh also. One of the beauties here are many waterfalls in the hilly regions. Various waterfalls from small up to the huge ones are really worth to see and many are right next to the highway.

Little Info About the place:

Type: Hill

Height: 3500 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Medium (5. hrs trek)

Bhimashankar:-  its one of the 12 Jyotirling's of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle, is a Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km’s), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Junglefowls, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufa indica elphistoni), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.

Mesmerizing scenery on the way,- bhimashankar wild life sanctuary!!

Shiva Temple: The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the Hemad Panthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high “Deepmala” or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.

Gupt Bhimashankar : There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the “water sculpted” “Shiva Linga” under this waterfall. This is called the Gupt Bhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.

Nagphani : We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The route going up through this route leads to the Nagphani. We can have a view of the forts of Peth and Padhar and the plateaus of Peth and Matheran.
