YHAI Mumbai Unit Trek to Visapur - 29th June, 2014

$
0
0
Trek: Fort Visapur
Region: Lonavala
Grade: Medium
Height: 1,084 meters - 3,556 feet
Expense: INR 700

About Visapur:
Visapur Fort is larger and at a higher elevation than its twin fort- Lohagad. Within the fort are caves, cisterns of water, a decorated arch and old houses. These two roofless buildings surrounded by outer or veranda walls said to have once been Government offices. The ruins of a large stone-built house are known as the Peshwa's palace. In addition to a huge carving of Hanuman, there are also several temple dedicated to him scattered all over the place. Hanuman (or Maruti) was likely the patron deity of Visapur fort.
There is a well which local legend says was built by the Pandavas. In 1885, near the north wall there was an iron gun ten feet long and of four-inch bore, marked with the Tudor Rose and Crown, flanked by the letters E. R. This is probably a gun of Queen Elizabeth's reign probably taken as bounty from an English ship and presented to the Peshwa by Kanhoji Angre or some other commander of the Maratha navy. Like other guns on the fort it has been disabled by breaking off its trunnions. Close to it are the remains of an old Mahadev shrine.
Unlike the inner structure, majority of its wall is still intact. At a moderate pace, it takes two hours to walk along the winding Visapur walls. It is high and strengthened by towers along the west face. In other parts, the wall varies from 3 feet thick fortification, backed by masonry platforms where the slope of the hill is easy, to a mere parapet of dry stone where the plateau ends in a precipice. Two massive bastions still flank the ruined central gate.

The expense includes transport ex-Mumbai, breakfast/snacks, tea/coffee and YHAI expertise for the trek. Lunch is not included and has to be carried by the participants. Any expense other than mentioned is to be borne by the participants.

Hello Rangers,

A very warm invitation from Wild Rangers for the trip to Chincholi Morachi-Ranjan Khalge-Ahmednagar Fort on 12-13 Jul 2014

If you are looking for an escape from your busy life, Morachi Chincholi is the right spot to be. At this major tourist attraction, you can unwind and bask in the glor
y of nature and forget your worries completely. Located 50 KMs from Pune, on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway near Shikhrapur, Morachi Chincholi is a nature’s paradise.
Surrounded with lush greenery, this village is a peacock sanctuary with multiple splendid sights to visit. It has been named Morachi Chincholi because it has 2500 peacocks and numerous Tamarind trees.

It is considered one of its kind villages in the country where peacocks and villagers share a unique bond and live together in perfect harmony. The residents of this place feel blessed with gratitude, experiencing the sunset till dusk, bathing in a river under the open skies and having the magnificent birds for company.
One specially visits this place to admire the beautiful peacocks that are generally seen in mornings between 6 am to 8 am or in the evening from 5 pm to 7 pm. And the ideal time to visit them is during monsoons, when the peacocks are dancing gracefully welcoming the rains.

Height : 2100 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade : Medium
District : Raigad
Region : Karjat
Base Village : Neral

Trek Leader : Vishal Khond

Some details about Peb Fort :Located in the same mountain range as Matheran, Peb fort is a enjoyable trek for a day’s outing.
The fort derives it name from the Goddess 'Pebi'; Peb is also called 'Vikatgad' for its supposed shape of the Elephant Headed God, 'Ganesh'. The trek to the top involves surmounting a small rock patch and a ladder. The fort is famous for its caves which are maintained by disciples of Swami Samartha and the meditation chambers carved out from the rock inside the mountain. To get inside the meditation chamber, one has to crawl through a narrow passage in the rock and then climb down into the meditation chamber. The chamber is very well maintained with tiles on the floor for ppl to sit and meditate.

The fort also has a temple dedicated to Swami Samartha on the top and has the footwear or 'Padukas' worn by the great saint kept on the top. The view of the entire Neral and Karjat region from the top is worth the climb. Another attraction of the trek is the only standing Bastion or Buruj facing the Panorama point of Matheran, the view from here is just too beautiful to describe.

The known history of this fort dates back to 15th century when this place came under the rule of Nijamshahi. When nijamshahi dynasty was about to end, ShahajiRaje took control of it as a secretary of Nijamshahi and tried to protect it from Mughals and Adilshahi. He couldn't hold it back for a long had to surrender it.
Shivaji took this fort from Mughals on 8 Jan 1658. In 1661 it was given back and was won again by Shivrai. In treaty of Purandar, in 1665, Marathas lost these forts again. The Moghal sardar Manohardas Gaud was the in charge of this fort. He did much construction on the fort. In Feb 1670, Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli, but failed. Thousand of Marathas were killed by Moghals. It was a bad blow to Marathas. Even after this victory, Manohardas Gaud, the chief of the fort gave up his position and a new chief Alveerdi Beg was appointed.
