BAAN Hikers overnight trek to sudhagad on 28-29 June 2014

Sudhagad is one of the ancient forts in Sahyadri. It was the glory of Bhor state.
Initially, Sudhagad was called as ‘Bhorapgad’. During empire of Shivaji Maharaj this fort was named as Sudhagad. This fort is approximately 590 meters in height. Sudhagad is a huge fort. It is called as the replica of Raigad.

Sudhagad was included in ‘Swarajya’ in 1648. It is described in old records as follows:
“Malavji Naik Karake put the ladders in Sakharadara. Initially, Jadhav and Saranayak both climbed the fort under the guidance of chieftain ‘Maloji Bhosale’. After that Haibatrao climbed the fort. 25 soldiers went ahead and killed the guards. Further the chief of the fort was killed in anguish and the fort was conquered.”
Shivaji Maharaj renamed Bhorapgad as Sudhagad. Later Sambhaji met Akbar (the rebellious son of Aurangjeb) in the ‘Pachchapur village’ situated at the base of this fort. Annaji Datto, Balaji Aavji Chitnis, his son Aavji Ballal and Hiroji Pharjand were all important persons in ‘Ashta-Pradhan Mandal’ of Shivaji Maharaj. Sambhaji has killed all of them in ‘Parli’ village near Sudhagad.

TREKWAYS SAHYADRI 1 day trek to Fort Harihar on Sunday, 29 June 2014 (starting on Saturday Night 28 June 14)

$

0
Region : Nashik - Trimbak Range

Height :  3600 feet (Approx)

Grade : Medium  (Thrilling)

Brief Information of Fort Harihar :.

Harihar Fort is built on a triangular prism of rock. Its three faces and two edges are absolutely vertical (90 degrees). The third edge towards the west is inclined at an angle of 75 degrees. A one metre wide rocky staircase with niches in it is carved out for ascending & descending the fort.

There is a temple with Shivling & a large cave with no idol in it. The view from top is very exciting. One can see Vaghera in the north, Tringalwadi, Kanvai and Upper Vaitarna lake in the south, Brahma, Kapda and Brahmagiri in the east, and Fani, Basgad and Utwad in the west. The actual top of the fort can be accessed with a bit of easy rock-climbing without equipment.

There are 117 steps in all. After you climb the first rocky staircase (main entrance) we walk through below a overhang with a sheer drop on the other side facing Brahma hill.. Simply superb. Again one has to climb a set of steep stairs (with niches), then pass thru a staircase inside the rock (like Peth-kothligad fort) and then reach the top of the fort. The view from the top is excellent.
