Raigad is a hill fortress situated in the modern day near Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. The Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj made the fort his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha Empire eventually covering majority of modern day India. The fort, which rises 820 metres (2,700 ft) above sea level, is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. There are approximately 1400–1450 steps leading to the fort, though today a rope-way exists to reach the top of the fort. The fort was looted and destroyed by the British upon siege.

Girivihang Trekker's Trek to Karnal Fort Saturday, June 14 2014

$

0
Girivihang Trekker's is a non-profit making registered organisation.

We have organized our first monsoon trek to the Karnala Fort in 15th June 2014. The history of the fort is also interesting. Till 15th century the fort was under Nizamshahi rule. When Shivaji wanted to capture the fort, his army initially surrounded the fort. They built temporary obstructions and continued to attack. After a few days, they captured the fort. After that the Moguls, the Angres and Peshwas ruled the fort. In 1818, colonel Prother of the British captured it. Finally the tricolour was furled here. However the cisterns here show that the fort is ancient and dates back to 12th century.

The inhabitants are the tribal Adivasi people, who represent a simple living and a life full of struggles. The art of these people is worth, and they still have preserved their tradition. Their paintings are called “Warli” paintings, and are worthy of appreciation. Their life is simple and still they adopt conventional methods of earning. A movie in Marathi was featured on the folks, which enabled many to know about the people and their culture.

TREKWAYS SAHYADRI: 1 Day Monsoon Trek to Visapur Fort & Bhaje Caves on 22 June 2014

Brief info about fort:

Region: Nane Maval (Lonavla)

Height: 3500 Feet above MSL (Approx)

Grade: Easy.

Type: Hill Fort

Lohgad & Visapur fort near lonavala lay in the Nane Maval region. These are the twin forts played important role in guarding ancient trade route connecting ghat to the Konkan. Amongst these twin forts Visapur is less popular and unknown to the few.

The main characteristic of this fort is the strong fortification built on a large plateau, to make it one of the strongest forts. A large plateau of this size is found on many less forts. It is difficult to fire cannons on the fort due to its position. We can see the injuries of destruction caused by Mughals and British on Bhaje caves, but this has not affected Visapur much. The long stretched ramparts fascinate us. On this same plateau we can see a huge stone wheel. It was used for grinding the mixture of lime, jaggery & lead. This mixture was used as cementing material for building purposes. The wheel was driven by bulls, and is the big one of its kind.

Informational Sight-seeing on Panhala with all the facts and a lecture on the historical developments by Shri. Shridutta Raut.

Trek to Kalsubai via Indore with OffBeat Sahyadri on 22nd of June 2014

Don’t you think touching the clouds at highest peak of Sahyadris in Maharashtra

would be an awesome way of kicking off this year’s trekking season

Come join us for a trek to : “Kalsubai”,

"Because there are no limits.."

Dear OffBeaters,

OffBeat Sahyadri invites you for the a trek to Kalsubai via Indore, highest peak of Maharashtra on 22nd June 2014, beginning on 21st night from Mumbai.

Trivia

Type: Peak
Height: 1646 meters or 5400 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Difficult
Village: Indore.

Kalsubai is the highest peak of the Sahyadris in Maharashtra.

Kalsubai is situated in Ahmadnagar district at approximately 25-30 Km. South-East of Igatpuri. At the summit is a small temple of Kalsubai, which can seat just three people. At this superb height, the view is just marvellous. The vastly spread out backwaters of Bhandardara attract one’s attention from the top. To the north of the mountain range forts such as Ramsej, Harihargad, Brahmagiri, Anjaneri, Ghargad, Bahula, Tringalwadi, Kavnai can be seen. To the east one can spot Aundha, Patta, Bitangad, to the west Alang, Madan, Kulang, Ratangad (south west) and to the south Pabargad, Ghanchakkar, Harishchandragad can be seen.

It usually takes 3 hours to reach the top from Bari and 4 from Indore. Soon after leaving Bari, a small stream is crossed followed soon after by a Hanuman temple. The route from behind this temple takes the hiker straight to the summit. There are three iron ladders along this route. There is a well near the last iron ladder as one approaches the top. Since Kalsubai is extremely famous, enough efforts have been taken to make this trek easy. There are steel railings, chains and ladders at places where it is difficult to climb. This is the most usual route that most of the trekkers take to climb Kalsubai, but at Offbeat we are going to descend via this route.

We will be ascending Kalsubai via Indore route; a less trudged route. It takes 4 hrs
from Indore to reach the top. It’s a completely raw route with no ladders, no
constructed steps but only a foot trail to make your trekking more exciting.

Reaching the top is a real satisfaction. Reaching a top of the Everest is but a special one! As far as Maharashtra is concerned, reaching the summit of Kalsubai, the Everest of Maharashtra, should also be a special one!

Peripheral sites:

Backwaters of Bhandardara

Forts seen: Ramsej, Harihargad, Brahmagiri, Anjaneri, Ghargad, Bahula, Tringalwadi, Kavnai Aundha, Vishramgad, Bitangad, to the west Alang, Madangad, Kulang, Ratangad  (south west) and to the south Pabhargad, Ghanchakkar, Harishchandragad

Team OffBeat Sahyadri

Rules and regulations.

Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury andabsolute comfort then we can hardly help them. ;)
Offbeat sahyadri believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our offbeater friends to understand group dynamics and leave athome their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself becomes unforgettable! Trust us on this.

Now some basic codes.
Respect nature.
1)    Absofreakinglutely no littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throwgarbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses? J.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
2)    Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!

3)    Remember, the mountain has a mind of his own. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true.

With fellow trekkers.
1)    It is fun to interact and get to know people from different walks of life. Feel free to take the
opportunity
  to expand your social circles.
2)    Share water and food. Nothing else is a better ice breaker than being offered water or a bite of your sandwich!
3)    Care for your fellow trekkers. It is not nice to be self centered and unamicable.

For your own safety
1)    The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2)    Simply put, stay with the group. Do not rush far too ahead or lag too behind. We understand that everyone has a different stamina and we try to keep the group bound together.
3)    Do not wander off from the main trail. Whenever there is no established trail, strictly stay with the group. Be within the sight of the person ahead of you and the one behind you. It helps.
4)    One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all offbeaters.
5)     Finally, the non arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited.

Few Information about the places to be visited

Jog Falls

Jog Falls , Gerosoppa Falls or Joga Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India, Located in Sagara taluk, these segmented falls are a major tourist attraction. They are also called Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi.

It is located on the Shimoga and Uttara Kannada district border.

Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River dropping 253 m (830 ft), making it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India after the Nohkalikai Falls with a drop of 335 m (1100 ft) in Meghalaya.

Sharavati, a river which rises at Ambutirtha, next to Nonabur, in the Thirthahalli taluk and takes the northwesterly course by Fatte petta, receives the Haridravati on the right below Pattaguppe and the Yenne Hole on the left above Barangi. On arriving at the frontier it bends to the west, precipitates itself down the Falls of Gersoppa, and passes that village (properly Geru-Sappe), which is some 29 kilometres distant, discharging into the sea at Honnavar in North Kanara.

Murudeshwara

Murudeshwara is a town in the Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada district in the state of KarnatakaIndia. "Murudeshwara" is another name of the Hindu god Shiva. Famous for the world's second-tallest Shiva statue, Murudeshwara beach town lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea and is also famous for the Murudeshwara Temple. The nearest airport to Murudeshwar is Mangalore International Airport at distance of 160 kilometre .Murudeshwar has railway station on Konkan railway route.

Gokarna :

Gokarna (Kannada: ಗೋಕರ್ಣ) is a small temple town located on the western coast of India in Uttara Kannada district in the beautiful Indian state of Karnataka. Main temple and deity is Lord Shiva, also known as Mahabhaleshwara. This temple houses what is believed to be original image of Lord Shiva's lingam. There are many other temples all over this small town. Ankola and Kumta on Highway 17 are the main towns near Gokarna.

Gokarna is historically known as one of the seven important Hindu pilgrimage centers. Gokarna is located on what was once pristine unspoiled beach near estuary of river Aghanashini with its beautiful palm trees, other colorful tropical fruit and flower trees. Of late due to the numbers of tourists the character of this town has changed. This town is no longer just a center of pilgrimage though massive numbers of devotees still visit the town for the purposes of offering prayers and worship to Lord Shiva.

Batch 4 : Explore the Legendary Dudhsagar Waterfall and Trekking in Jungle, Goa with TMI on 06th September and 07th September 2014

Visit the Legendary Waterfall of India – Dudhsagar waterfall and Trekking in Dudhsagar Jungle, Goa with Trek Mates India on 06th September and 07th September 2014 (Leaving on 06th September Afternoon and Returning on 08th September, Monday Early Morning)

Dudhsagar is one of the world's most exquisite falls. It lies high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are so spectacular during the monsoon season when the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India. Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's fifth tallest waterfall and is 227th in the world at 310 m. The water plummets hundreds of meters (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa.

There is also a legend associated with this waterfall. It is believed that a beautiful princess lived in the forest (near present day Dudhsagar Falls) in a palace. She loved and enjoyed bathing in a lake nearby and used to drink "sweetened milk" from her "golden jug" after finishing with her bath. One day while enjoying her jug of milk she found herself being watched by a prince, who was standing amongst the trees. Red with embarrassment at her inadequate bathing attire, she poured the jug of milk in front of him to form an improvised curtain to hide her body while the maids rushed to cover her with her dress. It is said that it is that sweetened milk that cascades down the mountain slope as Dudhsagar Falls to this day as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess.

This is equally scenic but less popular route. One has to get down at Kuhlem (Collem) railway station and walk towards the falls which is about 11 km away. It normally takes 2–3 hours to reach. The famous photograph of Trains passing through before the waterfalls can be seen in this route and also the complete stretch of the falls will be visible while you hike towards the waterfalls.

About Fireflies -

Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are not actually members of the fly family. They are actually beetles, and only have the ability to fly during their very short adult phase. As a general rule, genuine members of the fly family have two-part names, while other flying insects have one-word names. House flies and tse-tse flies are indeed flies, while fireflies and dragonflies are not. It's a distinction only an entomologist could love.

These bugs begin their life cycles as fertilized eggs implanted into damp soil. After three weeks, immature larvae emerge and essentially become eating machines. Young fireflies capture small prey, such as snails, worms, and mites, and inject them with a powerful acidic juice, much like spiders.

The immature larvae will then suck out the dissolved body tissue. They remain in this immature larval stage for one or two years, building up "mud houses" to protect themselves as they grow into pupa and eventually into the adult lightning bugs we see during summer months.

Adult fireflies emerge from the pupa stage fully formed. For the next three weeks or so, their only missions are to eat, sleep, and make more fireflies. To accomplish their mating mission, they are equipped with special chemicals which create a cold light, known as bioluminescence.

About Rajmachi -
Rajmachi consists of two citadels(Balekilla)

1) Shrivardhan - Srivardhan Fort peaked at a height of 3000 ft., lies to the east of Rajmachi fort. The hilly terrains of Rajmachi provide considerable trekking thrill. The architectural style of construction is typical of Maratha period and is characterized by strong walls, semi-circular entrances and cisterns. Two large tanks were used as the chief sources of water supply in the fort. The temple of Bhairavnath is located inside and is an added attraction. Panoramic views of surrounding hills, greenery and forts of Lohagad, Tungi, Korigarh and Visapur can be obtained from here.

2) Manranjan - The Manoranjan fort probably belongs to the Yadav period and is one of the two forts adjacent to the Rajmachi fort. Uniquely, this place is characterized by the presence of a square shaped lake divided by a straight rock

Kondana Caves is an enormous rock-cut Budhist cave. The Chaitya of the cave retains its wooden enterior and in the monsoon with the overhead water gushing down over the opening of the cave in a powerful waterfall – it’s a sight to behold.

One might even see the caves, old temples and monuments on the way to the top which is another 40 minutes from the village Rajmachi. One can even observe the wonderful reflection of Rajmachi(Shrivardhan) in the pond in the Rajmachi village.

Also try to see the Kondane Caves which are about one hour distant from Kondivde and away from the main path to Rajmachi.

Here is a link to a document by Mr. Mukund Gondhalekar that gives more information about this historic fort and the activities carried out by Rajmachi Rural Aid and Development Programme for its conservation and development.
