SPANDAN BHRAMANTI: 6 Forts in 1 day of Palghar Region on Sunday 11 May 2014

Brief Introduction about Kelwe/Shirgaon/Mahim/Bhawangad/Danda forts -

Grade:  Simple

Location: Safale – Kelwe – Palghar region

Mode of Transport: Tumtum

Kelwe (Sea Fort): This fort is rectangular in shape (75ft long and 40ft in breadth) & from a distance the fort looks like a ship. At the western end of the fort we see a wall that separates a small part of the fort. The door used to exist but now in place one finds only a broken arch. On the left we can find a fresh water tank. The broken arch leads us into the balekilla which is like a huge watch tower 2 storeyed, but completely open and ruined.

Kelwe Fort : This fort was initially surrounded by sea, but is now on the coast due to reduced sea level. In 1739, The Marathas conquered this fort on 10th January in the “Campaign of Vasai”. The fort walls and entrances were buried under sand, until in 2008-09, a group of people under the group “Kille Vasai Mohim” cleaned up the sand and the entrances. Today, we have to enter crawling through the partially blocked entrance to the first level. Entering the second door we reach the backside of the fort. There are 4 amazing bastions on 4 sides, shaped triangular. These have windows and holes for guns. It takes less than an hour to see the fort.
.
SHIRGAON FORT: Entrance thru the main darwaja at the north-eastern part of the fort. This fort resembles Muslim architecture with its dome shaped bastions. Just at the entrance on the right-side are inscriptions dating the origin of this fort to 1714 A.D. As we enter the fort, we find that most of the area is now in ruins. There are 5 bastions on the fort. Climb the dome-shaped, north-eastern bastion which is in good condition and overlooks the road. Walking on the ramparts we head to the bigger bastion which is on the north side. This bastion is also dome-shaped with 5 pillars and is in excellent condition. Both these bastions have small doors to enter and have about 5 pillars running in a semi-circular pattern. The bastion at the north-western end is broken. Check out the south eastern bastion which is open and does not have a dome. We then move towards the south-western bastion which is also in a broken condition. The area inside the fort between the north-west and south-west bastions houses 5 rooms which are open and in complete ruin condition. There are plenty of cells and tunnels inside the fort and most of them are secret ones and yet to be found. Some of the cells/rooms were used as godowns. Another important thing that we noticed was that there were no water tanks or wells in the fort. Quite strange! The sea water touches the fort on the western side.
.
MAHIM FORT: In 1739, Chimaji Appa started his occupation on the fort and the area around. At that time there were just 60 soilders and 15 cannons on the fort. While on Medekot (small fortification/bastion made of wood), next to the fort, there was a Portuguese captian and 30 soilders. The Mahim fort entrance was supported by 2 pentagonal shaped bastions and the cannons were well placed on these bastions. These bastions are now completely broken and in ruins. Inspite of all this, the fort fell in the hands of the Marathas.
In 1818, the British won this fort, and they have described this fort with 10mtrs high fort walls and an approx area of 75 sq. mtrs. Till 1862, this fort was kept in extremely good condition. Even the collector of Thane district used to live in the fort premises. The Mahim fort used to be of strategic importance & in the olden days this fort used to be a major hub for all land and sea trade.

Bhavangad Fort:The Bhawangad fort is located in Palghar taluka in Thane district. It is blessed by a unique combination of history, geography and nature. It was built by Chimaji Appa, the great Maratha warrior in the 4th decade of the 18 th century. The local people call this fort as BHONGAD. Today the fort is in a very bad state. After 1818, nobody took care of the fort. During the British regime, inspite of taking care, they ransacked and destroyed the entire fort.

Malvan : Malvan  is a  town in Sindhudurg District, the southernmost district of Maharashtra. This culturally and historically important town is a Taluka place in Sindhudurg District. Malvan taluka consists of villages Aangnechi wadi, Achra, Khalchi Devli, Jamdul, Juva, Pankhol and Sarjekot. Malvan is wellknown for its historical monument, the Sindhudurg fort, which is beautiful and vast in area. Malwani Folk are very hardworking and helpful. The main occupation here is fishing. The staple diet of Malvani people is fish and rice.It is also known for its variety of mangos (Malvani Hapus - Alphonso). Sweets such as Malvani Khaja (Made from Gram - besan flour and coated jaggery) and Malvani Ladoos are famous across the state.A very important part of Malavni culture is a Malvani Dashavtar, a drama-play based on mythological stories. There are many interesting  places  to visit  in Malvan and this can be noticed with the recent increase in forieng visitors to this region.

Malawan Fort :

The name of this fort is given to Sindhudurg district. Tourists from all over the world visit this great sea fort.  Sindhudurg was built with the help of huge rocks on the ‘Kurte' island, which amazes people, and one appreciates the vision and foresight of  “Great Maratha King Shivaji “.

Bharadi devi : Bharadi Devi(goddess) is one goddess one just can't think of missing when one is in Malvan. This is the famous “active goddess” situated at Anganewadi, 14 kms from Malvan. Angnewadi is the small hamlet of Masure village. The Bharadi devi (goddess) is very famous for her wish-fulfilling power. Devotees express their wish before her and once the wish is fulfilled they come to express their gratitude

Witness the Water World (Pic Courtesy Internet)
Tarkarli Beach : Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg. Sea and sand blending in enchanting natural harmony, gracefully cruising boats in calm and cool river waters add to the beauty of this beach.

Kunkeshwar Temple : Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings.

Rameshwar : Some destinations own such historical peculiarities which sets them apart from other ones. Place named Achara is one of them. It’s a small village in Malvan Taluka. We are all aware that in historical times people were gifted with “Inams, Jagirs or Watan(land)” by kings or emperors for their achievements. Achara too is Inam or Jagir, but it’s owner or Inamdar (landowner) is not a layman. Chhatrapati Shambhu Raje of Kolhapur gave this Inam to Shri Dev Rameshwar ( i.e. Lord Shiva). Achara boasts the historical temple of Lord Shiva, popularly known as ‘inamdar Shri Dev Rameshwar’ Architecture of the temple is grand and spectacular.

Rock Gardens

Just Behind the Malvan Police Station, half Kilometer away from Malvan jetty near the Arase Mahal is the Malvan Rock Gardens close to the beach. Malvan Rock Gardens is a beautifuly manicured garden located just by the sea overlooking the Chivla beach.

Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury and absolute comfort then we can hardly help them.

Sa-Hi Trekkers believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our Sa-hi friends to understand group dynamics and leave at home their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself become unforgettable! Trust us on this.

Now some basic codes:
Respect nature.
1) No littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throw garbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses?
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!
2) Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!
3) Remember, the mountain has own mind. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true. Never take nature as granted.
For your own safety
1) The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2) One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all Sahi Trekkers.
3) Finally, the non-arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during trek.

Safety measure is to be followed on strict basis, anybody not following will be discarded on the spot.

Rules and regulations.

Moments Shoot's Photo walk for witnessing Ancient Shiva Temple @ Ambernath

Description
The Shiva temple in this small town in Maharashtra is the earliest recorded Bhumija style temple built by the Silahara Dynasty, which ruled the Konkan area of Maharashtra in the 11th and 12th centuries. The most powerful king of this dynasty, Chittaraja, began the construction of this temple and his younger brother Mummuni, who became a feudatory of the famous Chalukya kings of Kalyani, completed it in 1060 AD.

Historical records of the temple prove that this is the oldest existing temple built in the Bhumija style of architecture. Silahara kings were traditionally Shaivites – but the sculptures prove that they accepted other paths to spiritualism as well. The sculpture of Hari-Hara-Pitamaha-Surya in the temple complex is unique because Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and Surya have been portrayed together in a rare sculptural masterpiece.

The temple has many features that make it special and different. It can be said to be located at the crossroads – both geographically and culturally – presenting an aesthetic blend of many styles. It has a Chalukyan influence as well as features from Gujarat’s Solanki style of architecture. The Silaharas also built the Kolhapur Ambamata temple. Both the Ambernath and Ambamata temples are in worship for over a thousand years and lakhs of devotees visit them each year even today.

Rules and regulations.

So, Capital NO= NO!
