                    Sussat...Lohagad & Visapur Trek

It is situated 52km from Pune in western India. Lohagad is at an elevation of 3,450 feet (1,052 m). It divides the basins of the Indrayani and Pavna and is situated on a side range of the Sahyadris. The Visapur fort is located on its eastern side. The four large gates of Lohagad are still in good condition and reasonably intact. Historical records show that in the later Peshwa period, Nana Phadnavis (1742-1800 AD) built several structures in the fort such as a big tank and a step-well (bawali).

On the west side, there is a long and narrow wall-like fortified spur called Vinchukata (Marathi for Scorpion's tail; see picture) because of its shape. Lohagad has a long history with several dynasties occupying it at different periods of time: Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizamshahis, Mughals and Marathas. Shivaji captured it in 1648 CE, but he was forced to surrender it to the Mughals in 1665 CE by the Treaty of Purandar. Shivaji recaptured the fort in 1670 CE and used it for keeping his treasury. This fort was used to keep the loot from Surat. Later in Peshwa time Nana Phadanwis used this fort for living for sometime. The fort has been declared as a protected moument by the government.

We at Trek Mates India have arranged a Night Trek to Vikatgad (Peb) Fort on 11th May 2014, Sunday (Leaving on 10th May , Saturday Night)

Trek Details :

Type : Hill Fort
Height : 2100 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade : Medium
District : Raigad
Region : Karjat
Base Village : Neral

Some details about Peb Fort :Located in the same mountain range as Matheran, Peb fort is a enjoyable trek for a day’s outing.
The fort derives it name from the Goddess 'Pebi'; Peb is also called 'Vikatgad' for its supposed shape of the Elephant Headed God, 'Ganesh'. The trek to the top involves surmounting a small rock patch and a ladder. The fort is famous for its caves which are maintained by disciples of Swami Samartha and the meditation chambers carved out from the rock inside the mountain. To get inside the meditation chamber, one has to crawl through a narrow passage in the rock and then climb down into the meditation chamber. The chamber is very well maintained with tiles on the floor for ppl to sit and meditate.

The fort also has a temple dedicated to Swami Samartha on the top and has the footwear or 'Padukas' worn by the great saint kept on the top. The view of the entire Neral and Karjat region from the top is worth the climb. Another attraction of the trek is the only standing Bastion or Buruj facing the Panorama point of Matheran, the view from here is just too beautiful to describe.

Rules and regulations.
Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury and absolute comfort then we can hardly help them.

Sa-Hi Trekkers believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our Sa-hi friends to understand group dynamics and leave at home their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself become unforgettable! Trust us on this.

Now some basic codes:
Respect nature.
1) No littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throw garbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses?
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!
2) Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!
3) Remember, the mountain has own mind. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true. Never take nature as granted.
For your own safety
1) The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2) One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all Sahi Trekkers.
3) Finally, the non-arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during trek.

Safety measure is to be followed on strict basis, anybody not following will be discarded on the spot.

Trek to Valley of Flowers / Hemkund Sahib with TreksandTrails

For the first time Treks and Trails, India is organizing Trek to Valley of Flowers / Hemkund Sahib.
The valley of flowers is a world heritage site and is part of the famous Nanda Devi Biosphere. This national park in the far interiors of Garhwal Himalayas (Uttarakhand) is spread over 87.5 sq. Kms. This hidden jewel is a truly unique habitat, home to many endemic varieties of alpine flowers and plants. This valley is at an altitude of 3250 m and above. Over the years many nature lovers from across the globe have been visiting the valley only to be left spell bound by its beauty. This region also plays home to many rare & endangered species of animals like Asiatic black bear, brown bear, snow leopard, blue sheep and more We offer a very special & flexible itinerary not seen before where people are going to get the option of spending many more extra hours inside and around the valley instead of just a couple of hours, if they were to take the regular itinerary. Our trip will have you walking large parts of the valley and climb up to a beautiful vantage point to observe the colossal beauty of this natural wonder. We will also explore higher reaches around the valley and retrace the steps of Frank Smythe, the legendary mountaineer who discovered this valley by chance while coming down after a successful summit of Mt. Kamet IN 1931. Not many people have walked this route.
A great feature of this itinerary is the flexibility to do your own thing in spite of being in a small group. You will get to decide how much you want to explore the valley and also if you want to trek to Hemkund Sahib, which from a trekkers point of view is not an ideal trail because of the number of people on it. We will give you other very exciting options. Also as part of the itinerary you get to stay in a spectacularly located lodge at Auli and also visit the revered Badrinath temple. To make this trek comfortable for a wider audience we have set up a beautiful & very comfortable campsite at Ghangria, away from the crammed Ghangria market. This will be your base for explorations into the valley he trek is undertaken during June to September months as this is the time when the valley is accessible. The bloom starts immediately after the melting of snow. Different flowers bloom in different months but the peak blooming period is from mid July to mid August. Almost 300 species of wild flowers bloom here unhindered by mankind. The prominent species are Brahmakamal, Blue Poppy, Cobra Lily Anemone, Geranium, Marsh Marigold & Prinula. Also the valley has to offer much more than flowers. There are waterfalls, glaciers, towering mountains, big rivers and quaint villages. These myriad shades of the valley will ensure that you have a most memorable trip in the mountains.

The season for this trek is June to September. In the initial days of the season there will be snow on the higher reaches which generally melts by mid-June. Post mid-June it could rain anytime and for any duration. In the higher mountains it normally drizzles and doesn’t pour the way it does in the plains. You will have lot of mist. Day temperatures could fall to 10-15 °C. There is possibility of sunny days also and in this case your day temperatures could go up to 20-23 °C. Evenings and nights are going to be moderately cold with temperatures around 6-14 °C.
Please keep in mind that the above information is not exact and does not account for sudden changes. Whatever the temperatures and conditions will be, you can be rest assured we will be prepared to handle it with ease as we use equipment of very high specifications.
OUR PLEDGE & PLEA
We conduct all our treks following the principles of ‘Leave No Trace’ policy and try to keep our impact minimal. We will request you to participate in this initiative by first knowing more about it and finally contributing by adhering to the tenets of this policy. You are sure to enjoy this kind of mountain travel where you don’t compromise on any personal comforts and yet help nurture & preserve a habitat which is beautiful and a source of joy, happiness & life to many.
WHY US
Unique trekking style: We absolutely love the mountains and care for them and have pledged to do our bit to take care of them. We know you love them too; else you wouldn’t be reading this right? To further our pledge, we have adopted the ‘Leave No Trace’ philosophy in all our trips. You are sure to love our style of trekking where you don’t compromise on anything and yet help nurture and preserve nature. We believe in an inclusive style of running our programs where the guests are encouraged to contribute with their bit to run the trek whether it is in camp set up, wrap up kitchen and so on. This builds camaraderie within the trekking group and adds to the overall experience of the trip.
Great pricing: We offer high quality trips at a great value. Our all-inclusive prices (on our fixed departures) include cost of good quality transport also. We are not the cheapest but if one were to do a fair comparison one will see that the little extra that we charge is for the extra services which we believe will surely enhance the whole experience. We urge you to get more informed by asking questions and knowing fully what you’re getting for the price charged.
High quality Camping equipment: Absolutely clean & washed sleeping bags (something you never get easily), inflatable trekking mattresses (not sure if anyone else offering these!) & high end high quality 3-season imported tents (cost 3-4 times the normal tents).
Our Team & Pedigree: They are a strong team with 90% people represented from different parts of the Himalayas. They were born & raised in the mountains and they understand & appreciate wilderness and travel very well. Our entire team is trained and certified from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and basic first aid. Apart from this, there is enormous emphasis on internal training and constant enhancement of skills and each guide is hand-picked for attitude & love for the mountains as much as sheer trekking excellence.

ITINERARY
 Day 01 ‐ Haridwar – Auli (2450m) Drive/280 kms/8-9 hrs
Our coordinators will be at Haridwar Railway Station to pick you up at 7:00 am and from here board a vehicle (arranged by us) and you will be driven up to Auli. This is a long but interesting drive, as you will be travelling along the Ganga & Alaknanda rivers most of the time. En route you will be crossing the holy towns of Rishikesh, Dev Prayag & Rudra Prayag. Evening relax at the beautiful lodge set up in an apple orchard. Overnight in Hotel at Auli.
Day 02 ‐ Auli (2450m) – Govindghat – Ghangaria (3050m) Drive/1 hr & Trek/4-5 hrs
Early morning drive for about an hour or so to reach Govindghat, our starting point for the trek. We start the trek by crossing the river Alaknanda over a bridge at Govindghat and from there walking towards the Bhyundar valley through forest area and a few villages. There are numerous waterfalls and absolutely lush green landscape all around. The gradient of the trail is moderate. The 14 kms trek to reach Ghangria takes about 4-5 hrs, one can also hire a mule or use the helicopter service to reach Ghangria. Overnight in Camp Valley of Flowers, Ghangharia.
Day 03 ‐ Ghangaria (3050m) – Valley of Flowers (3600m) – Ghangaria (3050 m) Trek/4-5 hrs
It's a delightful and short ascent to the valley. Gradient is moderate and the landscape extremely soothing to the eye. It will take about a couple of hours to reach the valley. The beauty of this world renowned valley totally lives up to its reputation. There are unending meadows laden with varieties of alpine flowers, network of streams and big mountains all around. At the entrance of the Valley stands the snow-clad peak of Ratban Parvat, towards the left is Nar Parvat, which separates the Badrinath valley from this valley, and to the right is dense Birch forest on the hillsides. We will spend 3-4 hrs exploring different corners & vantage points of the valley and towards late afternoon head back to the camp at Ghangria.
Day 04 – Select from the 2 options below:
Option 1: Ghangaria (3050m) – Hemkund Sahib (4329m) – Ghangaria (3050m) Trek/6-7 hrs
Today's climb to Hemkund Sahib is steep at places and will take about 3 - 4 hrs. Hemkund Sahib is a popular Sikh Shrine built next to the beautiful lake. The lake is surrounded by wild flowers with Brahmkamal being the most popular. Pilgrims take a dip in the freezing cold waters of the lake, not an easy task. The hot tea served in the Gurudwara (shrine) is divine to say the least. We will also visit the Laxman mandir next to the Gurudwara. Towards afternoon head back to Ghangria. Overnight in the camp at Ghangharia.
Option 2: Ghangaria (3050m) – Valley of Flowers (3600m) – Ghangaria (3050 m) Trek/4-5 hrs
You can do a leisurely hike today and spend more time taking pictures and documenting the flower species. Towards afternoon head back to Ghangria. Overnight in the camp at Ghangharia.
Day 05 - Ghangaria – Govindghat – Badrinath – Auli Trek/3-4 hrs & Drive/4 hrs
Today we trek back to Govindghat and from there drive for about an hour to reach the beautiful temple town of Badrinath. Situated on the banks of holy Alaknanda and with the backdrop of Neelkanth peak, an ancient temple with hot sulphur water pools and crisp and clean air, Badrinath is a wonderful destination to visit. For the spiritually inclined, there can be no better place. Later in the evening we return to Hotel, Auli where a hot shower followed by a sumptuous meal awaits us. Overnight in hotel.
Day 06 ‐ Auli – Haridwar Drive/280 kms/8-9 hrs

Places of Interest:
Vijaydurg fort:
Is the oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as “Gheria” as it is situated in the village “Girye”. Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory. Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.
Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan.
Sindhudurg – Padmagad fort:
Huge sea rocks of Malvan coast have shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit throughout the year to see this Maratha glory. The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 Shivaji erected this fort on 44 acres of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is ‘Shri Shivarajeshwar temple’ of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess ‘Bhavani Temple’. Impressions of shivaji’s fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall. Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.
Interesting Places to check out in and around Malvan
The Rock Garden Malvan
Rock Garden - The Rock garden is situated near the Arase Mahal and on the Rocky Shore of Malvan.
Jai Ganesh Mandir – Idol made from pure Gold.
Devbaug Beach (12 km south from Malvan)
Vital Mandir (4 km North from Malvan)
Malvan Bazar – every Monday on the beach.
Malvan beach (2 km from the Malvan ST stand)
Tarkarli Beach
Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546km away from Mumbai on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a sunny day you can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. From Malvan to Devbaug is one stretched beach of 12 km, the longest beach in Maharashtra. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.
Interesting Places to check out in and around Tarkali
Malvan Market
Sangam, the point where the Karli river empties into the Arabian sea.
Nivati Beach
Golden Rock
Wildlife Sanctuary
The Malvan (marine) Wildlife Sanctuary was declared on 13 April 1987, with a core zone of 3.182 km² and buffer zone of 25.94 km² (total area being 29.122 km²). The core zone includes the Sindhudurg fort, Padamged island and other submerged rocky structures. The north eastern border of the buffer zone is 50 m from the seashore near Malvan port, while on the east it is a semi-circular sandy beach 500 m parallel to the shore of Malvan, in the south it is near Mandel rock, and in the west touches the Malvan rock.
Scuba Diving
In India there are a very few places where scuba diving can be done and Malvan is one of them. Due to its relatively clear sea waters, Malvan serves as a perfect spot for scuba diving (done mostly with surface oxygen supply) and snorkelling. Near the outer walls of Sindhudurg fort one can see lots of live corals and beautiful marine life under the sea.
Parasailing also known as parascending, or "parakiting", is a recreational kiting activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle (usually a boat) while attached to a specially designed canopy wing that reminds one of a parachute, known as a parasail wing. The manned kite's moving anchor may be a car, truck, or boat. The harness attaches the pilot to the parasail, which is connected to the boat, or land vehicle, by the tow rope. The vehicle then drives off, carrying the parascender (or wing) and person into the air. If the boat is powerful enough, two or three people can parasail behind it at the same time. The parascender has little or no control over the parachute. The activity is primarily a fun ride, not to be confused with the sport of paragliding.
Water Sports
For water sports where one can enjoy rides like Jet-Ski, Banana boat ride, Bumper boat, Kayaks etc. Best time to visit Tsunami island for water sports is during high tide when the small island is partially submerged under the water (till knee length).
Night Boat ride:
Locals can arrange for a night boat ride for a price depending upon the size of the group and if the weather conditions are right. However please remember the boats would be comming back by 21:00 as then the night fishing would start. For those who want to see Dolphin Treks and Trails would recommend a boat ride early in the morning. If possible visti Tarkali by April end to reduce the disappointment of not seeing a Dolphin.
Ayurveda Centre:
A little before Tarkali beach is Ashwini Ayureveda Center, that offers a host of services such as Relax with Reflexology, Navarakizzhi, Abhyangam, Padabhyangam, Taruni skin wrap etc.
Tsunami Island (near Devbaug beach) is a small island on the delta of Tarkarli river. This beach cum island also is the place to enjoy boat ride in the backwaters of Tarkarli River. This island is NOT formed due to Tsunami waves, But due to this imaginary name it is a popular tourist destination

TMI : Twin Treks to Sea Fort Khanderi and Underi on 4th May 2014, Sunday

We at Trek Mates India invite you to Twin Treks to Khanderi and Underi island sea forts near Alibaug on 4th May 2014, Sunday.

Some information about the trek:

Fort : Khanderi and Underi
Type : Island Sea Forts
District : Alibaug
Level : Easy

The Island Sea forts of Khanderi and Underi are located three kms. in the sea near Thal. The two early notices of Khanderi in 1538 of the Portuguese Viceroy Dorn Joao da Castro and 1674 of John Fryer, refer to it as uninhabited island.

In August 1679, Shivaji occupied the islands ant oversaw the construction of a fortification, wall. The British attempted to claim the islands 'for the Crown' and oust Shivaji failed miserably and this was followed by Janjira Siddi to unseat the Marathas but followed suit. All attempts by the British and the Siddi to capture Khanderi - Underi, forts did not fructify till 1750, but finally it was ceded to the British in 1818 "as part of the Peshwa territory". And currently the Khanderi Fort is under Bombay Port trust administration.Permission of the Bombay port trust is necessary to visit the fort by mans of o boat.
In 1687, Light House on the Island was built by the British which still stands. Even today, there is a temple Of Vetal and the Tomb of Daud Pir both of which are worshipped by the local fishermen community.

Khanderi is a fortified island 20 km off the coast of Mumbai. This along with its sister fort Underi formed the major fortification along the Mumbai coast. This was built by Shivaji in 1660 to keep a check on the Siddis at Murud-Janjira fort. However later on it lost its importance. Most of the fort is still intact the most prominent structure is a lighthouse built in 1837. It can only be accessed with the permission of the Bombay Port Trust.

Underi (also called Jaidurg) is a fortified island near the mouth of Mumbai harbour south of Prong's Lighthouse. It is a companion fort to Khanderi and currently lies in Raigad district, Maharashtra. These islands of Khanderi and Underi served as one of the landmarks for ships entering Mumbai harbour. Underi is smaller than Khanderi and nearly circular. It was built by Kahim of the Siddis in 1680.
