Wild Rangers have arranged Trek to Ratangad – “The Jewel Fort”
On 15th August 13
Brief Introduction about Ratangad: -
Region: Igatpuri
Fort Height: 4225 ft. ( Above M.S.L. )
Type: Hill
Grade: Medium, Trek Experience Required
Base Village : Ratanwadi
District: Ahmednagar

As the name speaks, Ratanad is described as “Jewel Fort of Sahayadri”. It gets the name as it is origin for the river “Amrutvahini”. Located in the district of Ahmednagar, it stands tall to 4255 feet above mean sea level. The fort is about 2000 years old and is situated at banks of Bhandardara lake.
The main attraction of this fort is “Amurteshwar” temple which falls into “Hemadpant Era” ( way back to eighth century ). It truly defines the ancient sculpture of our great ancestors due to it’s carving.

Ratangad is a natural rock peak with a cavity at top that measure 10 feet high and 60 feets wide, thus forming a needle eye sort of appearance called as “Nedhe”. This is caused due to Wind Erosion and one can experience the nature’s power over there.
It has a water cistern which is usually filled with water throughout the year and was one of the largest rainwater catchment area for its time.
Fort has a main entrance called as “Tryambak Darwaza.” Also we have some remains of smaller entrance to the fort called as “Chor Darwaza”. Two ladders have been added to provide easy access to the main fort area.

A beautiful view of Katrabai from Ratan Gad.

Rules and regulations.

Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury and absolute comfort then we can hardly help them. ;)
Offbeat sahyadri believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our offbeater friends to understand group dynamics and leave at home their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself becomes unforgettable! Trust us on this.

Now some basic codes.
Respect nature.
1)   Absofreakinglutely no littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throw garbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses? J.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
2)   Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!

3)   Remember, the mountain has a mind of his own. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true.

With fellow trekkers.
1)   It is fun to interact and get to know people from different walks of life. Feel free to take the opportunity to expand your social circles.
2)   Share water and food. Nothing else is a better ice breaker than being offered water or a bite of your sandwich!
3)   Care for your fellow trekkers. It is not nice to be self centered and unamicable.

For your own safety
1)   The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2)   Simply put, stay with the group. Do not rush far too ahead or lag too behind. We understand that everyone has a different stamina and we try to keep the group bound together.
3)   Do not wander off from the main trail. Whenever there is no established trail, strictly stay with the group. Be within the sight of the person ahead of you and the one behind you. It helps.
4)   One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all offbeaters.
5)    Finally, the non arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited.

Regards,
Team OffBeat Sahyadri

VRangers one day thrilling waterfall trek to Chanderi on 18th Aug 2013.

Amidst the lush green vegetation surrounding the mountain ranges of Nakhind and Mhasmaal, Chanderi Fort emerges like a masterpiece crafted with nature’s best hands. Situated at a height of 2,330 ft, the hill fort, now in ruins, offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area as well as presents one of the toughest trek routes around Mumbai.

Although worth mentioning as the jewel in the crown of forts in the district of Raigad, there is no significant history attached to this fort. Near the caves on the fort are visible some remnants of fortification. This is the only sign to designate Chanderi as a fort. Chanderi is famous for water streams and its difficult route. In monsoon route gets thrilling with water flow and tricky.

Type: Hill Fort
Region: Karjat.
Height: 2330 ft.
Grade: Hard (Experience Required)
Last Date for Reg:-16th Aug 2013.
Charges: Rs. 300/- {the charges of the trek include breakfast, travelling from Vangni to Badlapur by public transport and refreshment.}

History:
In May 1656 Shivaji Maharaj conquered all the territory up to kalyan-Bhivandi-rairi. This was when this fort came under the rule of Marathas. Lack of development, Low water storage areas, absence of significant constructions, limited facilities for people to stay and extremely difficult approach road seems to suggest that rather than a fort, this was possibly a military base.

Itinerary:

The Pindari Glacier is found in the upper reaches of the Kumaon Himalayas in Almora district, to the southeast of Nanda Devi (7816 m), Nanda Kot (6861 m) and has lured mountaineers and trekkers since long time. The glacier flows to the south for a short distance of about 3 km and gives rise to the Pindar River which meets the Alakananda at Karnaprayag in the Garhwal district. Pindari's rugged beauty offers a breath-taking sight, especially for the trekker who is in love with nature in all its pristine glory. The Pindari Glacier is an unsurpassable and an exhilarating experience.

The Kafni Glacier (3860 m) lies left of the Pindar Valley below the famous peak of Nandakot. The glacier gives rise to the Kafni River, which is a tributary of the Pindar River. The Pindar River is a tributary to Alaknanda River, which eventually is one of the two headstreams of the Ganges.

Join us, let’s explore the region which is immensely breath-taking as the season is great due to clear skies.

Highlights of the trek:

·    Geography: Uttaranchal is composed of two words, "Uttar" meaning "North" and "Aanchal" meaning "Blessings." Earlier known as "Dev Bhumi" meaning "The land of god," Uttaranchal also nourishes a diverse and rich culture and monuments of historical importance. State is broadly divided into two zones Kumaon and Garhwal. We will keep explaining you the surroundings as we move on.
·   Photography: Enjoy the picturesque beauty of 'Land of the Gods', Uttarakhand through the lens with the professionals. You will be given various types of outdoor photography tips on the field. We will also try to capture snow-laden peaks in the night.
·        Birding: Himalaya is full of beautiful Birds and butterflies. Bird count en route forest is 200+. Let’s explore the magnificent beauty of the feathered ones. We will have a naturalist with us to explain about birds and wildlife.
·     Flora and Fauna: The region is known for its diversified flora and fauna. In this region we might get to see the rarest animal species in the world. It has a number of surprises in store to satiate their thirst for wildlife watching. The region is endowed with a unique and diverse range of biodiversity. From the snowbound peaks of the Himalayas to the moist Alpine scrub, sub Alpine forests, dry - temperate and moist- temperate forests to moist deciduous forests, the state possesses a wide biodiversity that in return nurtures a large multiplicity of floral and faunal forms.
·      Architecture: Kumaon has a distinctive style of architecture, which is to be seen on the one hand in scattered settlements of the higher Himalaya and populated agricultural valleys, and on the other in the temples, water tanks, forts and dharamshalas. Most of the old houses of Kumaon have stone walls, mud floors, slate roofs and patangans (courtyards of gray stone) and their doors, windows and Kholis have intricate figures of Ganesh and other Gods - Goddesses. The wood carver or carpenter never forgets to make closed nestles for birds.
·         Baghnath Temple: The temples, which have been constructed over a period of out a thousand years, follow a local style known as the 'Hemadpanthi' style of architecture. Bageshwar got its name from an ancient temple of Lord Shiva situated in the heart of the town. Bagnath temple holds the idols made from 7th to 16th century. It is divided mainly in two parts, with forts of Basgad, Utvad, hill of Fani, Harihar and Trimbakgad on one part while the forts of Anjaneri and Hargad on the other. Batch 3 : Explore the Legendary Dudhsagar Waterfall in Goa with TMI on 21st September and 22nd September 2013

Visit the Legendary Waterfall of India – Dudhsagar waterfall in Goa with Trek Mates India on 21st Sept and 22nd Sept 2013 (Leaving on 21st Sept Afternoon and Returning on 23rd Sept, Monday Early Morning)

Dudhsagar is one of the world's most exquisite falls. It lies high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are so spectacular during the monsoon season when the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India. Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's fifth tallest waterfall and is 227th in the world at 310 m. The water plummets hundreds of meters (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa.

There is also a legend associated with this waterfall. It is believed that a beautiful princess lived in the forest (near present day Dudhsagar Falls) in a palace. She loved and enjoyed bathing in a lake nearby and used to drink "sweetened milk" from her "golden jug" after finishing with her bath. One day while enjoying her jug of milk she found herself being watched by a prince, who was standing amongst the trees. Red with embarrassment at her inadequate bathing attire, she poured the jug of milk in front of him to form an improvised curtain to hide her body while the maids rushed to cover her with her dress. It is said that it is that sweetened milk that cascades down the mountain slope as Dudhsagar Falls to this day as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess.

This is equally scenic but less popular route. One has to get down at Kuhlem (Collem) railway station and walk towards the falls which is about 11 km away. It normally takes 2–3 hours to reach. The famous photograph of Trains passing through before the waterfalls can be seen in this route and also the complete stretch of the falls will be visible while you hike towards the waterfalls.
