Height: 1412 meters (4510 feet)
Grade:Tough+Thrill
Time: ~ 2 hrs from  Pachnai/ 8 hrs from Belpada ... Base Villages

Harishchandragad: The fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the Medieval period. The Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.

Taramati:
This is the topmost point on the fort. It is the second highest peak in Maharashtra after kalsubai. Leopards are seen in the forests beyond this peak. From here we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad.

Konkan Kada:
The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.

Karnala fort is a hill fort in Raigad district about 13 km from Panvel. Currently it is a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It was a fort of strategic importance.
Redeemed with the power struggle of many rulers, Karnala Fort stands as a specimen of the 13th century constructions. The fort was sparingly used by the Karnala rulers including Angres, Mudhan and Peshwas until 1818, by which time British rulers have taken over the grand old fort under their control.

The Karnala Fort engulf a steep rock in the midst of greenish surroundings and has been a challenge to many adventurous trekkers all through the past and continue to be a great attraction among the fans of trekkers. IMP: For entire trek Endurance level required is high.

Introduction, Geography & History of Forts:

Tail-Baila

Type: Hill Fort
Height: Approx. 3200 ft above MSL
Grade: Easy
Base Village: Tail-Baila village
Region: Maval.

Tel-baila is basically a watch tower built to guard over the Sahwashni ghat near Pali. Telbaila, situated around 94 km from Pune is a 'Magmatic Dyke' which is a very steep vertical wall of rocks created by intruding magma in to a fissure. The wall is divided into two dykes at the middle where a small Shivalaya exists. Tel-baila was a fort with steps which the British destroyed with mines & guns just to prevent any mutiny in future against the British Rule. Today Tel-baila stands as one of the most prominent places in the Sahyadris famous for its four rock-climbing routes. the rock walls of Tel-baila offer great rock climbing opportunities of technical grade. There are lot of ancient man made water tank & caves at the base as well as on the climbing routes. It's a climber's paradise. However during the trek we are going up to the temple and enjoy the scenic beauty of Sudhagad in Konkan visible right beyond the deep valley.
Ghangad:

Type: Hill Fort
Height: Approx. 3000 ft above MSL
Grade: Medium
Base Village: Ekole
Region: Maval.

Ghangad is situated on western side of Mulshi River, which is called as Korbarase Maval. This fort is surrounded by Korigad, Telbaila and Sudhagad, but still lonely and separated. There is not much documentation available about history of the fort. Earlier it was with Koli Samant, then with Adilshah and later with the Marathas.

On the fort you can see the remnants of old palaces along with some water tanks which are now in very bad condition. You can see Sudhagad, Sarasgad and wall of Tail-baila from the fort, also Nandand Ghat, Savvashincha Ghat and Bhorpaychi Nal, which descend to Konkan.

Sudhagad :

Type: Hill Fort
Height : 2100 feet
Grade : Medium
Base Village: Dhondase / Pachhapur
Region : Pali (Tal. Sudhagad) Raigad.

Sudhagad fort is believed to have been in existence since 200 BC. The Bhorai Devi temple on top is said to have been built by Sage Bhrug Rishi. The rulers of bhor dynasty were worshippers of Bhoraidevi.

The first reference of Sudhagad is in the year 1436 when Bahamani Sultan won over the fort. In 1657 the fort came under the control of Marathas and the name was changed from Bhorapgad to Sudhagad.

Main Attractions on the fort : Pant Sachiv Wada, bhorai devi temple, Takmak Tok, Mahadarwaja.

The region of Gorakhgad and Machchindragad has a dense forest cover. Fort Gorakhgad is quite small in size. It was had strategic importance during the region of Shahaji Raje. However, no major battle is recorded to have taken place here. It was used in Shivaji's era to patrol the nearby region and was used as a stopover station during the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Though small in size, there is enough availability water and a lot of space for accommodation. The fort gets its name from Saint Gorakhnath, who performed his "Sadhana" in this place.

Two cisterns can be seen just after emerging through the entrance and the path climbs up further ahead. Further, a small step-way descends down to the large caves that are carved out in the main rock of the pinnacle. Nature's grandeur can be appreciated here with the magnificent view of two large frangipani trees leaning over the valley and the excellent sight of Machchindragad. There are in total fourteen cisterns on the fort, however, only the three tanks near to the cave have portable water. There is a small Mahadeo temple with Nandi at the top.

More information about the trek / fort
Siddhagad is situated in between two know trekking destination Bhimashankar and Gorakhgad, Sidhhagad is known for its wonderful forest and a bit of thrilling patch towards the end. And if you are travelling in monsoon few river crossings and half a dozen waterfalls. So get ready for a all-round monsoon adventure and thrill

Kalyan is the nearest convenient railway station. S.T. buses from Kalyan to Murbad (about 30 Km.) are available every after 1/2 hour. From Murbad, catch S.T. bus to base village Narivali (about 15 Km.). 212 hours walk through dense forest will take you to Siddhagad Wadi (Village) and a temple. Further walk of 1 hour is through barren land. Be careful towards the end.
There isn't much to see on the fort except few remnants. However, the trek as such is very much enjoyable, especially in the months of October and November, when few waterfalls are still alive. Some 1/2 hr before the top, there is a nice cave made into a home place of "Sadhu Baba". View of the Gorakhgad and adjacent hills from the entrance of this cave is just wonderful (see the snap). Nice small courtyard in front of a cave could be a great place to sit and have a lunch.

CHADAR TREK 2014

DATE: Feb 8, 2014

Easily one of the most sought after treks in the world, a trekkers dream to do this once in a life time.

It is a 7 day trek in extreme cold conditions. It is a winter trek over a frozen river in Ladakh. Average mean temperature during the day is minus 15 and during nights temperatures fall to minus 25 and 30. The desolate trek is over the ever changing Chadar frozen river. Ice forms, breaks and changes colour on the river every few hours. At places the Chadar (or ice) does not form over the river. Trekkers have to forge a new trail climbing over snow covered steep rocky banks of the river to again descend to a spot on the river where the ice is more stable.

Trek Category: Tough

Program Schedule (Summary)

How to prepare for Chadar Trek?

We will soon add this link.

Of all the treks in India, Chadar is the most expensive trek you will do.

Following reasons:

1) You have only one option to reach Leh during winter, i.e. fly to and fro all other route are blocked due to extreme winter.

2) Expensive labour, Porter rates are more than double in winter. You can imagine why.

3) Rentals of all equipments and gear are very high during this season.

4) All food has to be flown in so obviously is very expensive.

5) Fuel since it is very limited is very expensive, it takes almost twice the amount of fuel to cook the food than in normal conditions.

6) It is not advisable to have a very large group of trekkers on a single party.

For those venturing out to the Chadar on the Nature Knights exploratory trek, our only advice is to prepare for the trek and not to treat it as any other trek. The rewards from this trek are plenty to take – the white winter scenery in the Chadar canyons is once in a life-time experience. Experiencing this marvel is something people travel all over the world to witness. I hate to admit, but Chadar is actually a very glamorous trek to do.

Hey All,
We at Wild rangers invite you all for a Two day Trek to Magical Bhimashankar via Ganesh Ghat Route 24th & 25th August 2013. Welcome to the land of Shiva, land of Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu, a land of sacred flora and fauna,!! with mystical fog and rain as our companions all the way !!

Little Info About the place:-

Type: Hill
Height: 3500 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Medium (5. hrs trek)
Base Village: Khandas

Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirling's of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle, is a Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km’s), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Junglefowls, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufa indica elphistoni), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.

Mesmerizing scenery on the way,- bhimashankar wild life sanctuary!!
Shiva Temple: The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the Hemad Panthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high “Deepmala” or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.

Bhimashankar Temple Top-covered in Fog
Gupt Bhimashankar : There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the “water sculpted” “Shiva Linga” under this waterfall. This is called the Gupt Bhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.

Nagphani : We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The route going up through this route leads to the Nagphani. We can have a view of the forts of Peth and Padhar and the plateaus of Peth and Matheran.
