Breakfree Journeys goes trekking to Kohoj this Saturday 3rd August 2013.

On our exploration of the northern region of Bombay, we came across several hidden gems. One of them, that stands out completely and quite literally is the fort of Kohoj. Standing with its imposing wall on the Manor-Wada road it offers a fantastic 3 hour long hike! The route passes through a dense forest which resounds with the calls of birds and insects, while waterfalls tumble about.

The route is classified as moderately difficult. Good shoes, lots of enthusiasm and an average amount of fitness and stamina are the only prerequisites to conquer Kohoj! The heart shaped lake at the base of the trail is a great place to swim and loosen up those tired muscles after the trek. This forest is also famous for fireflies that just light up the track as you make your way from the lake to the bus.

Here's the plan.

The Breakfree Bus will leave from Borivali(McDonald's) at 500 AM and proceed on the Western Express Highway passing through Goregaon-Andheri-Bandra(Kalanagar), further it will take the Sion-Ghatkopar-Vikhroli-Mulund(Check Naka)-Thane (Teen Haath Naka, Cadbury Junction, Majiwada) to eventually join the Ghodbunder road and then the NH8

This route is specially designed for our trekker friends living on the central line who generally miss out on treks of the western side!

We will be very happy to pick you up from any point on the given route.

Cost: Rs. 950 inclusive of Breakfast, Lunch, Transport and whole lotta fun!

A maximum of 18 participants will be allowed on the trek.

We normally do not accept advance payments and rely on your oral/written confirmation to block seats. Therefore it is advisable that you consult your prior commitments before confirming a seat rather than cancelling/backing out at the last moment much to inconvenience of everybody.

Kindly note:

1. We recommend Action Trekking Shoes; running/gym shoes normally give away to the tough terrain and become useless.

2. Carry at least 2 litres of water with you along with some dry snacks, fruits and a pair of change.

3. Consumption of Alcohol, Narcotic substances and cigarettes is prohibited and may lead to possible expulsion from the trek, and an early expulsion from Natural Habitat.

4. Windcheaters are recommended, avoid carrying umbrellas.

To confirm, do call us up on 09820023362

Around 350 km from Mumbai there is a small village in Sangli district, Battis Shirala. This village is situated at western part of Maharashtra, which is approximate 60km far from Sangli. Battis means ’32′, in Marathi. You may get confused why are using ‘Battis’ before the name Shirala. The reason is that Shirala is one of the Taluka in Sangli and there are thirty two small villages which comes under Shirala taluka, that’s why the name is Battis Shirala.

Though all the facilities are present in this village, but still agriculture is the main source of income in this village. All the people from this village and nearby village are very religious and I am saying this because of their very old festival which is Nag Panchami. The villagers celebrate “Nag Panchami” (Snake Worship) festival every year on 5th day month of Shravan according to the Marathi calendar, which means in the month of July or August. This festival is older than a century. The people from this village have faith on Lord Shiva and we know that Nag (Snake) is a friend of Lord Shiva in Hindu Religion. So, they celebrate this festival with full of purity and faith. The people catch snakes and worship them on this auspicious day.

Before going for snake hunting, people take kaul (permission) from Goddess Amba Bai by placing flower on her head. If the flower falls on left side, then that family allowed catching the snakes that year. It is believed that the only natives of that village are allowed to catch the snakes. On Bendur, a day approximately two weeks before the festival, farmers clean their cows and bulls, decorate them and feed them with some special food. After that the villagers go for snake hunting. Everyday villagers catch snakes by tracking their body marks in the soil. They catch the venomous India King Cobra as well. After tracking down the snake, they carefully dug down the earth where the snakes are hidden. The people who are catching snakes won’t take any special training for that. But they still work as professionals and they are so careful that snakes should not get hurt. They consider bad omen if they hurt snakes. There are 70-80 groups present in Shirala taluka who catch snakes every year for this festival and if they are lucky then each group catches 4-5 snakes. After catching snake, they keep them in a earthen pot and cloth is used to cover top of the pot and hang those pots inside the house. Villagers take them out every day and feed them with frogs and rats. This feeding is called Dav Pajane or feeding dew to a snake.

On the festival day:-
On the day of festival, each group takes their snakes to the temple of goddess ‘Amba Bai’ and takes blessings. Before that snakes are taken to the neighboring homes and where women worship these snakes in a traditional way. After that big rally organized by each group, in which they display snakes on tractors or open vehicles. Thousands of people from near villages and cities come to enjoy and take part in this festival. People dance and enjoy every bit along the rally. The rally continues till evening. Snakebite is very dangerous and it may causes death. So, safety measures are also taken care, because snakes are venomous, all the required medicines are available in village Government hospitals and other hospitals. Even policemen are there to control the crowd. Next day after the festival people release the caught snakes at the same place which they were caught.

History behind celebrating Nag Panchami:-
The Myth behind celebrating Nag Panchami is that, many years back one of the family from Shirala use to worship snake idol. When one of the Navnath (Gorakhnath) visited their place and he gave them permission to catch real snakes and worship them. Shirala also has Gorakhnath temple. Once in 12 years all the followers of Nath panti visit Shirala and leave one of them behind to take care of this temple for next 12 years. Shirala also famous for one of the eleven Maruti temples built by saint Samartha Ramdas in 17th century. This is all about Shirala, which is blessed with historic backgrounds and the history hidden in it.

Dear All

Last time when we did Boratyachi Nal trek from Singapur village, Singapurchi Nal trek automatically got included and topped the list. Singapurchi Nal Pass is open throughout the year.  During monsoon it is lush green out there. The Pass descends next to the two prominent waterfalls. There is a long Z through which descend continues. Afterwards it joins Boratyachi Nal for further descend to Dapoli village. During Boratyachi Nal descend trek we actually don’t descend it fully instead we take traverse towards Lingana. Boratyachi Nal we did in single day, this time we wanted to make it couple of days. So I was looking through what else we can add to it. Going North Bocheghol and Nisnichi Wat - Chander were options. I have done it before, so dropped it for this time. Coming to South Agya Nal - Ekalgaon is first one, but it remains closed during rains, so next option was Shevtya Ghat. Shevtya Ghat is accessible throughout the year.  There is a huge waterfall called Vaghera nearby.

I have been to villages of Shevtya and Dapoli for pilot recently. Discussed with trekkers who had been to these places in monsoon and detailed the plan.

Yatri Sahyadri - A Trek To Bhimashankar via Ladder Route on 11th August

$

Yatri Sahyadri has organized a trek to Bhimashankar via Ladder routeon 11th August, 2013 (Starting 10th Night).

Some basic information about the trek is as follows.
Some Information about the fort:

Bhimashankar.
Type:               Hill
Height -            3500 Feet above MSL (Approximately)
Grade -            Medium
Region -          Pune
Base Village - Khandas.

Bhimashankar
Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirlings of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle. The Maharashtra Government has also declared it a Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km’s), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Junglefowls, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufa indica elphistoni), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.

Shiva Temple . The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the Hemad Panthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high “Deepmala” or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.

Gupt Bhimashankar . There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the “water sculpted” “Shiva Linga” under this waterfall. This is called the Gupt Bhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.

Nagphani . We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The route going up through this route leads to the Nagphani. We can have a view of the forts of Peth and Padhar and the plateaus of Peth and Matheran.
