One of the many tunnels through which the train passes

Dudhsagar Waterfall
The magnificent Dudhsagar Waterfall is perched in the high peaks of the Western Ghats and is a sight to behold especially in the monsoons when it is in full and furious flow. From a distance, the waterfall appears like streams of milk rushing down the mountainside. The exhuberent and spectacular waterfall is located in the Sanguem taluka. Measuring a mighty 600m from head to foot, this waterfall on the Goa-Karnataka border, attracts a steady stream of visitors from the coast into the rugged Western Ghats. After pouring across the Deccan plateau, the headwaters of the Mandovi River form a foaming torrent that splits into three streams to cascade down a near-vertical cliff face into a deep green pool.

Picture Perfect pool at the base of the falls

The Konkani name for the falls, which literally translated means "sea of milk", derives from clouds of milky foam which rises up at the bottom of the falls. Dudhsagar is set amidst breathtaking scenery overlooking a steep, crescent-shaped head of a valley carpeted with pristine tropical forest, that is only accessible on foot or by train.

Associated legend
Like most places in Goa, the Dudhsagar waterfall too has a legend attached to its name. The legend tells the story of this powerful and wealthy king who ruled a kingdom in the Western Ghats. His lavish and opulent palace in the hills was surrounded by vast gardens which were full of deers and gazelles.

The King had a beautiful daughter, who used to enjoy taking a bath during the hot summers, in the picturesque lake near the forest on the edge of the King's palace grounds. It was her habit to finish her bath and have a jugful of sugared milk in a jug made of pure gold.

One day when she was finishing her usual jug of milk she found herself being watched by a handsome prince standing amongst the trees. Embarrassed by her inadequate bathing attire, the resourceful Princess poured the sugared milk in front of her to form an improvised curtain to hide her body, while one of the maids rushed to cover her with a dress.

Thus was the legend born? The sugared milk (dudh) poured down the mountainside and continued to flow in torrents as a tribute to the everlasting virtue and modesty of the Princess of the Ghats. The Dudh Sagar (Sea of Milk) continues to flow to this day and attracts thousands of visitors to one of the most popular and famous tourist spots in the state of Goa.

Near the top of the falls, the railway line from Vasco to Londa crosses the mountainside, with excellent views from the train. There also a couple of pools that you can swim in, making Dudhsagar a great place for a day full of fun and frolic. The alternate way of reaching the falls is only advisable between January and May, when the level of the water in the rivers abates enough to permit jeeps to approach the base of the falls.

Fall and Its Surroundings
Dudhsagar waterfalls and the roads surrounding it are maintained by the Goa Forest Department. It is considered to be one of the world's most beautiful water falls, is listed as India's fifth tallest water fall and has a total height of 310 meters. It looks extremely spectacular especially during the monsoon season. However, the roads leading to the fall remain closed during the rainy season and are opened for public transport only after October. The cascading waters form a pond beneath in which people can bathe but at their own risk. The waterfall which is located inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wild Life Sanctuary of Collem in South Goa is surrounded by a thick deciduous forest which houses various species of animals, plants, insects and birds.

Hey Mates, Did you realize that even in Mumbai, we are surrounded by the gorgeous beauty of Nature; the lush green trees, colorful butterflies, chirping birds, and pretty flowers… Yes, our own city has it all. And we at Trek Mates India want you all to explore all this as we organize a Informative Nature Trail to Nagla block on 3rd August ’13.

This is a small part of SGNP, which is of much importance to the wildlife. While the human race is entering into the national park from its east, west and south side, the wildlife has only the North side to escape.

Nagla block was quite a famous place among many naturalists, for bird watching and insect and butterfly study. There had also been news about this area many a times for the expected tiger sightings, for many leopard sightings, and many more insects and bird sightings, which are very rare in other parts of our country.

Details about the event:
Location: Nagla Block, Sanjay Gandhi National Park,
Type: Nature trail
Group size: 25 mates

Torna: Torna fort is amongst the tallest forts around Pune. A difficult trek the trek to Torna however is one of the most satisfying treks for a nature lover. A huge fort, Torna has seen many a war and has been in control of many rulers at different times. Though most parts of the Torna fort is in ruins the panoramic view the fort offers is well worth the climb up.

(*Pics Sourced from the Internet)

Torna fort is the first fort that Shivaji captured and that too in his teens! Shivaji renamed it as Torna. Torna fort is also called Prachandgad. One of the tallest forts around Pune Torna fort also is the only fort that Aurangazeb captured in a real war!
(*Pics Sourced from the Internet)

The Torna Trek is a medium difficulty trek but the rewards of the toil is really fulfilling! The narrow tracks on the way up from Velhe the base village of Torna Trek leads to beautiful landscape. After monsoons which is the best season for the Torna trek the entire way would be laden with wild flowers. TMI: Trek to Chanderi Fort on 4th August '13.

Hi Mates, we at Trek Mates India are glad to invite you for a One day Monsoon Trek to Chanderi via Vangani on Sunday, 4th August ’13.

Trek Details:
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 2330 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Medium
District: Raigad
Range:  Matheran
Base Village: Vangani
Trek Leader: Nilesh Patil - 8655588508

Chanderi is an ancient army fort situated near Vangani (Kalyan).
There are not much remnants on the top except few water tanks and shatters stones

The view from the top is really alluring; one can observe Karnala, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Manikgad, Peb, Matheran, Nakhind, Navra navri, Tavli etc from the top.
There is no significant history attached to this fort. Near the caves on the fort are visible some remnants of fortification. This is the only sign to designate Chanderi as a fort. In May 1656, Shivaji Maharaj conquered all territory up to Kalyan-Bhiwandi-Rairi. This was when this fort came under the rule of the Marathas.
Lack of development, low water storage areas, absence of significant constructions, limited facilities for people to stay and extremely difficult approach road seem to suggest that rather than a fort, this was possibly a military base.

The tentative itinerary for the Trek is as given below:
We will be starting with the second karjat local (time table given below)

TMI Trek to Ghosalgad, Talagad & Mandad Caves on 11th Aug, 2013

Hey Mates, Trek Mates India invites you to a One Day Monsoon Trek to Ghosalgad, Talagad & Mandad Caves on 11th August 2013, Sunday.

Little Information about the event:
GHOSALGAD :
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 1200 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Easy
Region: Roha, Raigad
Base Village: Ghosale
Trek Leader : Vishal Khond (8291139993)

GHOSALGAD : Approx 10 km south of Roha and 32 km east of Murud is a mountain which arises majestically to the sky. A fort on the top of hill has been named Ghosalgad after the village Ghosala below. The fort was used as look out post for those ruling over Murud.
As the base village Ghosal is at a considerable height, a hike to the fort from the base is not much and there is an easy path to the top. A water pond named Wajta Haud, remnants of watch tower, fortified wall, temple of Bhavani and Ganapati, water cisterns etc. can be seen atop. A beautiful view of base village Ghosala, Murud creek and Talagad can be seen from the top.

TALAGAD :
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 1000 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Easy
Region: Roha, Raigad
Base Village: Medhe
Trek Leader : Vishal Khond (8291139993)

TALAGAD : A fortified monument on the southern bank of Malti creek, the Tala fort lies east west at a height of 1000 feet above the sea level in Tala town in Maharashtra. The fort is separated from the rest of the hill by a wide gap. This protected monument of 4th century was built during the reign of Bhoja Raja and was used as a watch on the beautiful Rajpuri stream. Tala fort is a very good example for the artistic talents of the then generation. The bottom of the hill in which the fort situates is surrounded by thick woody forest. Once a center of prime importance, this marvelous construction stands as the relic of its past glory.

MANDAD / KUDA CAVES :
Kuda caves, famous for Buddhist caves. These rock cut caves are classic example of Buddhist cave art and amazing for their architectural excellence. These caves have two levels and the individual blocks are smaller and are on the upper levels. The inscriptions on the caves are the preaching of Buddha and his disciples. The interiors of the caves are carved with stupas and a rock carved image of an elephant as the janitor is inscribed on the front gate of the caves.
In many of the caves in Kuda hills, there are evidences to testify that monks used them as dwelling places. The inscriptions, letters and paintings in the Kuda hills shows that these caves are built in during first to sixth centuary B.C. Set up on a hilly terrain, the Kuda caves give a magnificient view of the valley below. This is a recommended place for those who are having a keen interest in historical monuments and archeology.
