Yatri Sahyadri - A Trek To Bhimashankar via Ladder Route on 11th August 2013.

    0

Yatri Sahyadri has organized a trek to Bhimashankar via Ladder routeon 11th August, 2013 (Starting 10th Night).

Some basic information about the trek is as follows.
    Some Information about the fort:

    Bhimashankar.
    Type:               Hill
Height -            3500 Feet above MSL (Approximately)
    Grade -            Medium
    Region -          Pune
    Base Village - Khandas.

    Bhimashankar
Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirlings of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle. The Maharashtra Government has also declared it a Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km’s), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Junglefowls, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufa indica elphistoni), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.

Shiva Temple . The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the Hemad Panthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high “Deepmala” or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.

Gupt Bhimashankar . There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the “water sculpted” “Shiva Linga” under this waterfall. This is called the Gupt Bhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.

Nagphani . We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The route going up through this route leads to the Nagphani. We can have a view of the forts of Peth and Padhar and the plateaus of Peth and Matheran.

    (*Pics Sourced from the Internet)

Torna: Torna fort is amongst the tallest forts around Pune. A difficult trek the trek to Torna however is one of the most satisfying treks for a nature lover. A huge fort, Torna has seen many a war and has been in control of many rulers at different times. Though most parts of the Torna fort is in ruins the panoramic view the fort offers is well worth the climb up.

    (*Pics Sourced from the Internet)

Torna fort is the first fort that Shivaji captured and that too in his teens! Shivaji renamed it as Torna. Torna fort is also called Prachandgad. One of the tallest forts around Pune Torna fort also is the only fort that Aurangazeb captured in a real war!
    (*Pics Sourced from the Internet)

The Torna Trek is a medium difficulty trek but the rewards of the toil is really fulfilling! The narrow tracks on the way up from Velhe the base village of Torna Trek leads to beautiful landscape. After monsoons which is the best season for the Torna trek the entire way would be laden with wild flowers. About the Place :

    | Grade : Easy|

Swap the city life for some bird-song! Karnala offers a refreshing, energising and completely revitalizing getaway from the hectic pace of city life - come here to watch the birds and wildlife & trek.

Karnala is located in the mountain range of the Western Ghats, is surrounded by many hills and is a trekker’s paradise. It has a protected wildlife park on the Konkan coast and it’s tiny sanctuary, barely 4.8 sq km is home to over 150 resident bird species and about 37 types of avian migrants. The monsoons rouse a number of feathered musicians, amongst them the paradise flycatcher, magpie robin and the Malabar whistling thrush. This is the season when the stillness of the forest in the Karnala Bird Sanctuary is ruffled by the melodies of these songbirds and the antics of the racket-tailed drongo as it mimics the calls of other birds!

Winter heralds the journey of migratory birds as they flock to Karnala - the ashy minivet, red-breasted flycatcher, blackbird, black-headed cuckoo-shrike, blue-throat, the blue-headed rock thrush and many others. The four-horned antelope, wild boar, common langur, are amongst the commonly seen wildlife at Karnala Bird Sanctuary.

Friends, you all are requested to carry packed lunch for the trek as there are no villagers and proper hutments for arranging food, water etc. Also there's nothing available on top except a mind blowing scenery, beautiful construction of rock-cut steps, thrill of climb & Loads of water. So do carry decent amount of eatables, and personal medicines as required.
