Introduction:-
Duration - 1 day
Difficulty Range - Easy
Height - Tung:-1075m
Korigad:- 929m
Base Village - Tung - Tungi Village
Korigad - Peth Shahapur

Korigad (also called Koraigad or Kumwarigad) is a fort located about 20 km away from Lonavla in Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Its date of construction is not known but likely predates 1500. This fort was incorporated into his kingdom by Shivaji along with the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Col. Prother tried to take over this fort but even after a prolonged siege could not make any headway. Finally on 14 March, by igniting the stored ammunition by means of a loose cannon ball he succeeded and this fort went to the British. Because of the Mulshi dam, a lake has formed close to the base of the hill on which Korigad stands

Tung Fort was built before 1600 CE. It was built by the Adil Shahi dynasty but was captured by Shivaji. It is small, not being able to hold more than 200 troops at a time. As such, it would not have been able to defend itself on its own for a long time. Its shape and structure suggests that its main function was as a watchtower guarding the road to Pune city. Dhamale family one of the Deshmukh from maval region was charged with ensuring the security of fort tung. During invasion, it served to provide a temporary distraction for invaders.

It will take a day to explore the entire circumference of the fort. Tactfully fortified this was one was one of the mightiest and inaccessible fort of the time.

There still exists a spacious Wada of the Pant Sachiv of the Sudhagad region. Its in bad condition due to lack of maintenance. Some maintenance work was initiated last year.

A well built temple of Bhoraidevi is the only place for shelter atop. There is deepmal in front of the temple. Few remnants of Tulsi Vrundawan lay in the vicinity.

Rules and regulations.

Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury and absolute comfort then we can hardly help them. ;)
Offbeat sahyadri believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our offbeater friends to understand group dynamics and leave at home their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself becomes unforgettable! Trust us on this.

Now some basic codes.
Respect nature.
1)    Absofreakinglutely no littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throw garbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses? J.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
2)    Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!

3)    Remember, the mountain has a mind of his own. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true.

With fellow trekkers.
1)    It is fun to interact and get to know people from different walks of life. Feel free to take the opportunity to expand your social circles.
2)    Share water and food. Nothing else is a better ice breaker than being offered water or a bite of your sandwich!
3)    Care for your fellow trekkers. It is not nice to be self centered and unamicable.

For your own safety
1)    The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2)    Simply put, stay with the group. Do not rush far too ahead or lag too behind. We understand that everyone has a different stamina and we try to keep the group bound together.
3)    Do not wander off from the main trail. Whenever there is no established trail, strictly stay with the group. Be within the sight of the person ahead of you and the one behind you. It helps.
4)    One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all offbeaters.
5)     Finally, the non arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited.

Trek O King: Trek to Sagargad on 4th Aug 2013

Trek: Sagargad

Height: Appx 1357 fts
Region: Raigad
Grade: Easy

The spur on which Sagargad fort is built holds a somewhat central position in the range of hills that forms the backbone of Alibag. this fort is also known as "Khed Durg".
Sagargad was perhaps never a place of consequence except under the Angres. It is mentioned in 1713 as one of sixteen fortified posts that were given to Kanhoji Angre by Pesva Balaji Visvanath.
This fort can be seen from the alibagh-pen road and is identified by the vanartok pinnacle which stand adjutant to the fort.

Sagargad's history is closely tied to that of the other coastal garrisons in the vicinity of Alibaug - Khanderi, Colaba, Revdanda, Chaul, and Underi. During the course of time, the fort's list of keepers has included the Satvahan, Moryas from the Konkan, Chalukyas, Shilahara Dynasty, Bahamanis, the Sultan of Gujarat, Nizamshahi of Ahmednagar, Portuguese, Marathas, Mughals and the British. According to legend, a subterranean escape tunnel runs from Sagargad to the Colaba island fort, several kilometres away in Alibag.
Apart from Shivaji, who surrendered this fort along with several others in the Treaty of Purandar in 1655, the fort's most dynamic occupant has got to be Kanhoji Angre, the legendary Maratha admiral who was assigned the task of patrolling the Konkan coast, and whom the British dreaded and labelled a pirate, because he kept attacking and capturing British, Dutch and Portuguese vessels on their way to or from their Asian colonies.

He even had a base in The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, from where he would mastermind these excursions. Closer home, he administered the area and maintained a naval force which methodically issued papers (dastak), authorising vessels to ply his waters. This was at a time when a struggle for supremacy flared between the Portuguese with a stronghold in Goa, the British East India Company, the Muslim Siddhis, who controlled patches like the Janjira island fort and supported the Mughal emperor, who himself was constantly being pushed to the corner by the Marathas, with their guerrilla warfare.
Angre could neither be trounced nor kept under control, even after the British and Portuguese decided to fight him jointly. He reportedly died in 1729, and remained undefeated. The Indian Navy has honoured him by naming the Western Naval Command headquarters after him.

Dear All

Last time when we did Boratyachi Nal trek from Singapur village, Singapurchi Nal trek automatically got included and topped the list. Singapurchi Nal Pass is open throughout the year.  During monsoon it is lush green out there. The Pass descends next to the two prominent waterfalls. There is a long Z through which descend continues. Afterwards it joins Boratyachi Nal for further descend to Dapoli village. During Boratyachi Nal descend trek we actually don’t descend it fully instead we take traverse towards Lingana. Boratyachi Nal we did in single day, this time we wanted to make it couple of days. So I was looking through what else we can add to it. Going North Bocheghol and Nisnichi Wat - Chander were options. I have done it before, so dropped it for this time. Coming to South Agya Nal - Ekalgaon is first one, but it remains closed during rains, so next option was Shevtya Ghat. Shevtya Ghat is accessible throughout the year.  There is a huge waterfall called Vaghera nearby.

I have been to villages of Shevtya and Dapoli for pilot recently. Discussed with trekkers who had been to these places in monsoon and detailed the plan.

One day trek to ‘Ajoba’ on 28th July 2013

Dear All,

We at ‘Nisarg Trust’ invite you for one day trek to ‘Ajoba’ which is also known as ‘Aja Parvat’ near Shahapur on 28th July 2013

Minutiae:

Height: 4511 ft (Above MSL)
Grade: Medium
Time: 4 hrs from base
Location: Shahapur region.

Ajoba lies in a huge mountain range, situated to the east of Shahapur village, surrounded by Harishchandragad and Naphta to the South east, Naneghat at the South, Ghanchakkar to its East, Katrabai and Ratangad to the North side.

Ajoba is famous for the Valmiki ashram where goddess Sita was said to be staying after being separated from Lord Rama. After ascending for a while, we reach the Lav-Kush cave where a cradle is placed. One more interesting fact about Ajoba which many people do not know that the forest at Ajoba is one of the ‘Sacred Groves’ in Maharashtra.

About Sacred Groves:

Presence of such sacred groves has been documented since the early 1800s. Believing trees to be the abode of gods and ancestral spirits, many communities set aside sanctified areas of forest and established rules and customs to ensure their protection. These rules varied from grove to grove but often prohibited the felling of trees, the collection of any material from the forest floor, and the killing of animals. Presiding deities administered punishment, often death, to individuals who violated the rules, and sometimes to the entire community in the form of disease or crop failure. As a result of these protective restrictions, preserved over countless years, sacred groves are now important reservoirs of biodiversity.

Sacred groves are often the last refuge for endemic and endangered plant and animal species. They are storehouses of medicinal plants valuable to village communities as well as modern pharmacopoeia, and they contain wild relatives of crop species that can help to improve cultivated varieties. Sacred groves also provide for the water needs of nearby communities. Many sacred groves contain water resources such as ponds and streams, and the vegetative mass that covers the floor of a grove can absorb water during rainy seasons and release it during times of drought. Trees also improve soil stability, prevent topsoil erosion and provide irrigation for agriculture in drier climates.

As it is a sacred grove, it has varied flora and fauna. Hence we might get a chance to see monsoon migrant birds viz. Cuckoo, Pitta, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Also known as Three Toed Kingfisher)

Breakfree Journeys goes trekking to Naneghat - 27th July!

The Satavahana Dynasty is known to be one of the most powerful dynasties that ruled the Deccan in the ancient times for almost 450 years. Out of the many legacies that they left behind, one of the most remarkable are the caves of Naneghat.

Naneghat was an important trade route linking Kalyan and Junnar. A valuable octroi post, coins were collected from the traders as a toll for passing through. Naney or as coins are known in Marathi probably lend the term to the name of this route.

This Saturday, we invite you to pack your goods in your sacks and head with us on this journey into history. As we wind our clocks back to 230 BCE when traders moved about with men and material through this route! The trek is nearly three hours long, though not entirely complicated - it is a rejuvenating climb! Offering a chance to move through dense forests, gurgling streams and a splendid view of the entire Malshej region from the peak!

Here's the plan.

The Breakfree Bus will leave from Borivali - Tata Power at 0445 AM and proceed on the Western Express Highway passing through Goregaon-Andheri-Bandra(Kalanagar), further it will move down towards Sion - Mulund - Thane and then further take the Kalyan-Murbad-Malshej route.

We will be very happy to pick you up from any point on the given route.

We should be back in the city, late evening by around 10 pm.

Cost: Rs. 950 inclusive of Breakfast, Lunch, To and fro transport and a whole lotta fun!

A maximum of 18 participants will be allowed on the trek.

We normally do not accept advance payments and rely on your oral/written confirmation to block seats. Therefore it is advisable that you consult your prior commitments before confirming a seat rather than cancelling/backing out at the last moment much to inconvenience of everybody.
Kindly note:

1. We recommend Action Trekking Shoes; running/gym shoes normally give away to the tough terrain and become useless.

2. Carry at least 2 litres of water with you along with some dry snacks, fruits and a pair of change.

3. Consumption of Alcohol, Narcotic substances and cigarettes is prohibited and may lead to possible expulsion from the trek, and an early expulsion from Natural Habitat.

4. Windcheaters are recommended, avoid carrying umbrellas.

To confirm, do call us up on 09820023362!

Dear Travellers,

In year 2012, MUMBAI TRAVELLERS conducted eco-tours to Kaas (Valley of flowers of Maharashtra and now the world heritage site) and took a huge number of travellers from Mumbai to Kaas platue Satara. Our tours were guided by well known naturalists and photographers to provide in depth knowledge of all the species and both the tours went very successful in terms of sightings, information, feel of nature, fun, food and photography.

However, many of the travellers could not join due to lack of advance planning and Mumbai Travellers also faced some trouble booking best of the best facilities for last minute registrations.

Keeping this in mind, we are requesting all the travellers & nature lovers to BLOCK their seat with Mumbai Travellers by sending us the mail on mumbaitravellers@gmail.com. Its just the name registration, you do not need to pay anything for this reservation. You will be contacted on priority, when the exact dates of the flowering and accordingly tour batches will be announced.

This way, we will be giving preference to those who have BLOCKED their seats in advance and together we can ensure the availability of best facilities and services on tour, catering to all the interested travellers.

Wishing you all a great sighting of colourful flowers at Kaas platue.

Thanks and Regards,

Places to See:
Lord Shiva Temple: BhimashankarTemple is located in the village of Bhorgiri 50 km North West of Khed, near Pune. There is a beautiful temple of Lord Shiva which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. It is a modest yet graceful temple and it dates back to mid 18th century. The shikhara of the temple was built by Nana Phadnavis. This temple is closely associated with the legend of Shiva slaying the demon Tripurasura associated with the invincible flying citadels Tripuras. Shiva is said to have taken abode in the Bhima form, upon the request of the Gods, on the crest of the Sahyadri hills, and the sweat that poured forth from his body after the battle is said to have formed the Bhimarathi River. Bhimashankar is also the source of the Bhima River, which flows south east and merges with the Krishna River near Raichur. A big size bell in Hemadpanthi structure: Built by Nana Phadnavis is also a feature of Bhimashankar.
Other equally important places:Hanuman Lake, Gupt Bhimashankar, Sakshi Vinayak, Origin of River Bhima, Nag Phani from where one can see the view of the Peth fort and Padar, Bombay Point, and lot more. Bhimashankar is conserved forest area and wildlife sanctuary where a variety of birds, animals, flowers, plants can be seen. A rare animal "Shekru"can be found in deep woods. Bhimashankar is worth visited for jungle lovers and trekkers as well as for pilgrims.
Routes to Bhimashankar: There are two routes to Bhimashankar from the base village of Khandas, which are most popular among trekkers.  1. Ganesh Ghat:  There is a bridge around 2 km from Khandas, and the track going to the right from the bridge is the Ganesh Ghat route. This is the easiest and the longest route to Bhimashankar. Within an hour of trekking along this route you will reach a Ganesh temple. The route ahead will take around 3 hours until you reach the plateau of Bhimashankar, there is a small pond dug out in the ground called 'Hanuman Tal'. This trek is five hours to six hours long. 2. Shidi Ghat (ladder Route):  This one is a shorter route, but difficult especially in the monsoons. The route gets its name from the ladders placed on the steepest parts. The route going to the left of the bridge (mentioned in Ganesh Ghat) goes to the village. On moving ahead you will reach a well, take a left from there to Shidi Ghat. Within the first two hours of climbing you will pass three ladders. You will reach a junction where both the routes - Ganesh ghat and Shidi – merge.  There are many huts providing food and tea in middle of trek route. A further 1 ½ hour trek takes us besides a pond. The road, which goes to the left from this pond, takes us to the temple.
