Breakfree Journeys goes trekking to Harihar! 13th July 2013

The famous rock hewn steps
Courtesy: Manoj Kalwar for TMI
The monsoon is here to stay, and we are not complaining! After a series of treks close to home, it is time to spread our wings and fly over to the misty region of Igatpuri! Home to Harihar, our next trekking destination this Saturday! (FB event here)

Harihar is a medium grade trek. A rock patch at the end is the most thrilling bit of this trek. Standing at an incline of around 80 degrees, one needs to climb on rock hewn steps (which have niches carved in for additional support) to reach the peak! The total trekking time to reach the top would be around 3 hours.

Sounds good? Here's the plan!

Here's the plan.

The Breakfree Bus will leave from Borivali - Tata Power at 0445 AM and proceed on the Western Express Highway passing through Goregaon-Andheri-Bandra(Kalanagar), further it will move down towards Sion - Mulund - Thane and then join the Nashik highway.

We will be very happy to pick you up from any point on the given route.

We should be back in the city, late evening by around 10 pm.

Cost: Rs. 1000 inclusive of Breakfast, Lunch, To and fro transport, Evening snacks and a whole lotta fun!

A maximum of 18 participants will be allowed on the trek.

We normally do not accept advance payments and rely on your oral/written confirmation to block seats. Therefore it is advisable that you consult your prior commitments before confirming a seat rather than cancelling/backing out at the last moment much to inconvenience of everybody.

Kindly note:

1. We recommend Action Trekking Shoes; running/gym shoes normally give away to the tough terrain and become useless.

2. Carry at least 2 litres of water with you along with some dry snacks, fruits and a pair of change.

3. Consumption of Alcohol, Narcotic substances and cigarettes is prohibited and may lead to possible expulsion from the trek, and an early expulsion from Natural Habitat.

4. Windcheaters are recommended, avoid carrying umbrellas.

To confirm, do call us up on 09820023362!

Hirkani Adventures Trek to Nane Ghat Sunday, July 21, 2013

About Nane Ghat:
Bor Ghat, Malshej Ghat and Naneghat were the foremost road links for commuting coast to the plateau. The Satvaahans had made Naneghat their main route to Junnar. During their tenure the most important way of commuting was Naneghat, which linked Kalyan & Sopara to Paithan. Today one has to reach Junnar by going all the way through Malshej, which is a big round. But Naneghat had much reduced distance and was a definitely shorter route. However, as time proceeded, it was destroyed by alien rulers and then paid no attention.

What to see?
The first thing we can see after reaching Naneghat is the spacious cave of Naneghat. The ancient carvings, which are seen on the walls of the cave, remind us of the Satvaahan period. Here we find inscriptions in Brahmi script all over the cave. These indicate the magnificent era of the Satvaahans and their generosity. These inscriptions are gradually being destroyed, and only a part of it is remaining. The inscriptions are very precious, and are undergoing destruction due to the negligence of Archeology.

The widely spread plateau of Naneghat is an astonishment. To the left the steps besides the cave lead us to the plateau and going to the right lead us to Nana's thumb. After climbing all the way to the bottom of the thumb, when we climb the stairs, we do not expect a big plateau. Thus this route leads directly to a higher altitude quickly, unlike Malshej Ghat, which goes all around the mountains. Ate the entrance to the Ghat is a big stone-made vessel like thing, in which coins as toll were put.

Height: 2500 ft

HI Rangers, we are inviting you all for kalsubai trek via indore.

Kalsubai lies in the Sahyadri mountain range. This being the highest peak, it commands beautiful & picturesque views. The highest peak in the world is “Mount Everest”. Likewise, Kalsubai is the highest peak in the Sahyadris in Maharashtra. Kalsubai is the Everest of Maharashtra. To reach the top one can use steel railings, chains and ladders at places where it is difficult to climb. There is a symbolic Kalsubai temple at the top.
Region: Ahmadnagar-Igatpuri
Height: 5400 ft (aprx.)
Grade: Medium.
Base Village: Bari
Last Date for Registration: - 16th July 2013.
Cost: Rs. 750/- (which includes traveling from Dadar to Dadar private vehicle, breakfast, Lunch & refreshment).
History:
It is said that Kalsubai name is taken from a Koli girl named Kalsu.' Kalsu, according to the story, was fond of wandering in the forest. One day she came to Indor at the foot of the hill now called Kalsubai, and took service with a Koli family on condition that she should not be asked to clean pots or to sweep. Matters went smoothly till, one day, one of the families ordered Kalsu to clean some pots and clear away some Utter. She did as she was bid, bat, immediately after, climbed the hill and stayed on its top till her death. Where she cleaned the pots is known as Thale Mel, and where she cleared away the litter as Kaldara. The hill is a natural stronghold about ten miles south-east of Igatpuri, the nearest railway station. Its top is a cone with room only for a small shrine and a trigonometrically survey cairn. There is a large lower shoulder without remains of buildings, and the absence of water cisterns shows that the hill was never used as a fort.

For your own safety
1)   The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2)   Simply put, stay with the group. Do not rush far too ahead or lag too behind. We understand that everyone has a different stamina and we try to keep the group bound together.
3)   Do not wander off from the main trail. Whenever there is no established trail, strictly stay with the group. Be within the sight of the person ahead of you and the one behind you. It helps.
4)   One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all offbeaters.
5)    Finally, the non arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited.
