Monsoon Trek to Harihar fort (Harshagad) with Wild Rangers on 21st July, 2013

Hey Rangers, We are glad to invite you for Trek to Harihar fort(Harshagad) on 21st July, 2013.

General Information:
The fort of Harihar, lying on Trimbak range, was of significant importance in earlier periods, as there used to be a route crossing this range connecting Maharashtra to Gujarat.Trimbak range has spreaded its arms to the north of Igatpuri and west of Nasik. It is divided mainly in two parts, with forts of Basgad, Utvad, hill of Fani, Harihar and Trimbakgad on one part while the forts of Anjaneri and Hargad on the other. Vaitarna is the main river in this region. But due to the one – sided slope of Sahyadri, the water flows away from this region. There is an absolute shortage of water from January to March in this region. The fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village.

Blog on Doodhani Waterfall Rappelling by Suraj

What is your idea of a weekend outdoors?

Some may prefer a trek through the wilderness, others want to just ‘chill with friends’ on a picnic by a waterfall. Some people are just looking to escape the maddening chaos of weekday rush hour traffic amidst misty hilltops, reading their favorite book next to gentle brook. And then, there are some who seek the thrill of adventure and adrenaline, which comes from rappelling down a hillside. But, what if you could combine all of these … in just one day!! Travel, Trek and Rappel under a 90ft. Waterfall … Incredible, isn’t it?

This is exactly what a group of travelers from Pune and Mumbai experienced this weekend at Dhodani, Panvel. Dhodani is a rustic and scenic village of less than 100 houses, located at the North Western foothills of Matheran, where a river emerges from its lofty abode in a cascade of 3 waterfalls. Situated on the terminal end of Panvel-Dhodani road, Dhodani is accessible by road from Panvel through State Transport (ST) buses or minivans. Forts such as Chanderi, Prabalgad and Kalawantindurg and the Gadeshwar dam are visible along the way. Apart from the waterfalls, Dhodani is also the starting point for a half day treks to Matheran, ideal for beginners and group treks for school children & community groups etc.

I (Suraj Devadiga) was part of the Waterfall Rappelling event organized by Backpack Holidays (Dimesh Patel, Borivali West, Mumbai). The rappelling was to be conducted under the expert guidance of Hemant Salunkhe (Hemat Sir), Sushant Karandikar and Rahul Shinde. Having previously participated in other rappelling events conducted by this team, I was at ease about their skills and especially, their ‘commitment to safety’ of all the participants, always mindful of the fact that many participants are usually ‘first timers’.

By 8 am, the participants started trickling in at Dhodani village. What started out as a small group of 10-15 people, slowing swelled up to 70 participants. (Thanks to digital word-of-mouth publicity on Facebook). The participants were a diverse bunch, from teenaged school and college students to married couples looking to ‘share an adventure’ with their spouse, from early career professionals catching up with college buddies, to mid-career professionals looking to unwind from the stress at work.

After piping hot ‘poha and kadak chai’ at the village, the group started the trek uphill. We followed the winding footpath though the village, through rice paddy fields, along the river for a few hundred meters and then climbed gently up the valley on the southern bank of the river. The steep and rocky northern end of the valley used as to graze cattle and goats by the villagers, is a ‘quicker but trickier’ trek for some of the more seasoned trekkers. But since it was a diverse group and also to enjoy a more scenic, longer and safer trek, we took a path up the southern bank of the river. As we climbed higher, the ‘paywat’ (meaning footpath in Marathi, but amazingly similar to Pathway in English) got narrower and the vegetable patches irrigated by the rain-fed brooks and rivulets, turned into denser vegetation that grew wild on upper reaches of the valley. The top 2 cascades of the waterfall are visible throughout the trek, beckoning the weary trekker with a promise of fun and frolic at the end of the journey. Our destination however was the third and nearest waterfall, comprising 2 side-by-side cascades of ~90 ft. each. As we drew nearer to our destination, there are 2 forks in the path. Once leads to the bottom of the waterfall and the other climbs to the top. We climbed to top and set up the gear awaiting the arrival of the adventure aficionados.

What can I say about the rest of the story? They say ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’. So, you’d better see it in the amazing pictures courtesy Nilesh Wagh from Pune & Video courtesy Surabh Amlani, Mumbai.

TIE trek to Harishchandra gad- 20-21st July 2013

Fort ht:- 4000Ft
Range:- Malshej
District- Ahmednagar
Grade:- Tough

Information about the fort:-

Harishchandra gad itself is brand! This gigantic fort is very well known and trekkers call this fort as the "TREKKER'S PARADISE!"

Range of Harishchandragad is known as 'Mighty Sahyandris' due to the hugeness of the mountains.
This fort has played an important role in guarding the surrounding region in the Maratha empire.

The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in 6th century, during the rule of Kalchuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves are idols of Lord Vishnu. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas, they are not related to Ayodhya. Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic “Tatvasaar”), used to meditate here in 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort and those existing the surrounding region point to the existence of diverse cultures here. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar (in Khireshwar village), in the Harishchandreshwar temple and in the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period, since it is related to Shaiva, Shakta or Naath.
Later the fort was under the control of Moguls. The Marathas captured it in 1747. The last warrior named Joshi became a martyr in the fight against the English in 1818.

About the Place :

| Type : Hill Fort | Height : 2000 ft | Grade : Medium|

Tandulwadi is 5 k.m. away from Saphale station. This Fort is a hill fort good for one day outing. We get a great view of the Vaitarna River. The route goes over some rocky portions, and is a little tricky if wet. On the top there are few water tanks and a monsoon lake. The fort was mainly used as a lookout point in the bygone era.

Friends, you all are requested to carry packed lunch for the trek as there are no villagers and proper hutments for arranging food, water etc. Also there's nothing available on top except a mind blowing scenery, beautiful construction of rock-cut steps, thrill of climb & Loads of water. So do carry decent amount of eatables, and personal medicines as required.

Trek to Mahuli Fort on 28th July 2013

Trivia:
Type: Hill Fort
Height:
2815 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade:
medium
Base Village: Mahuli
If you are an adventure freak, then this trek is for you.
Mahuli though split in three parts viz Bhandargad, mahuli and Palasgad, they all are part of one huge fort.

Mahuli is more known for the series of pinnacles vazir , vishnu ...ect that attract the rock climbers from all over the Maharashtra.

Its is the highest point in the Thane district.

The kalyan Darwaja is the Konkan side entrance to the fort and its access has become difficult since the Britishers blew the stone carved steps.
The specialty of this entrance is its location. It’s almost impossible to locate it as it has been carved in groves and cuts of the mountain through a huge rock.

Since it was destroyed by Britishers, it requires technical expertise to access this portion of the fort.

Beside an open Shiva Temple there is a smaill perennial drinking water cistern on top . three caves of which the larger can be used as overnight shelter.

Schedule

Meeting Point : Asangaon at 8.14am

Note : please take return ticket till asangaon station.

One can move along the complete top of the fort by walking on the bailey. While coming up from the Peth-Shahpur route, we come across many caves, some cisterns and an idol of lord Ganesh.
After entering the Ganesh Darwaaja (Peth Shahpur route), we can see the remnants of the old buildings. Here we can see the temple of Goddess Korai Devi. This temple has been renovated recently. There is a “DEEPMALA” right in front of the temple. The idol of Korai Devi is around 4 feet high. There are many bastions on the Southern side of the fort. There are 6 cannons on this fort. Of these, the biggest cannon named “Laxmi” lies next to the Korai Devi temple. There are two more temples on the fort.
There are two large ponds on this fort and ahead of them are two caves. Here we can see the idol of lord Vishnu holding the Conch, Discus, Mace and Lotus flower.
