Dear All

Last time when we did Boratyachi Nal trek from Singapur village, Singapurchi Nal trek automatically got included and topped the list. Singapurchi Nal Pass is open throughout the year.  During monsoon it is lush green out there. The Pass descends next to the two prominent waterfalls. There is a long Z through which descend continues. Afterwards it joins Boratyachi Nal for further descend to Dapoli village. During Boratyachi Nal descend trek we actually don’t descend it fully instead we take traverse towards Lingana. Boratyachi Nal we did in single day, this time we wanted to make it couple of days. So I was looking through what else we can add to it. Going North Bocheghol and Nisnichi Wat - Chander were options. I have done it before, so dropped it for this time. Coming to South Agya Nal - Ekalgaon is first one, but it remains closed during rains, so next option was Shevtya Ghat. Shevtya Ghat is accessible throughout the year.  There is a huge waterfall called Vaghera nearby.

I have been to villages of Shevtya and Dapoli for pilot recently. Discussed with trekkers who had been to these places in monsoon and detailed the plan.

Malvan : Malvan  is a  town in Sindhudurg District, the southernmost district of Maharashtra. This culturally and historically important town is a Taluka place in Sindhudurg District. Malvan taluka consists of villages Aangnechi wadi, Achra, Khalchi Devli, Jamdul, Juva, Pankhol and Sarjekot. Malvan is wellknown for its historical monument, the Sindhudurg fort, which is beautiful and vast in area. Malwani Folk are very hardworking and helpful. The main occupation here is fishing. The staple diet of Malvani people is fish and rice.It is also known for its variety of mangos (Malvani Hapus - Alphonso). Sweets such as Malvani Khaja (Made from Gram - besan flour and coated jaggery) and Malvani Ladoos are famous across the state.A very important part of Malavni culture is a Malvani Dashavtar, a drama-play based on mythological stories. There are many interesting  places  to visit  in Malvan and this can be noticed with the recent increase in forieng visitors to this region.

Malawan Fort : The name of this fort is given to Sindhudurg district. Tourists from all over the world visit this great sea fort.  Sindhudurg was built with the help of huge rocks on the ‘Kurte' island, which amazes people, and one appreciates the vision and foresight of  “Great Maratha King Shivaji “.

Bharadi devi : Bharadi Devi(goddess) is one goddess one just can't think of missing when one is in Malvan. This is the famous “active goddess” situated at Anganewadi, 14 kms from Malvan. Angnewadi is the small hamlet of Masure village. The Bharadi devi (goddess) is very famous for her wish-fulfilling power. Devotees express their wish before her and once the wish is fulfilled they come to express their gratitude

Witness the Water World (Pic Courtesy Internet)
Tarkarli Beach : Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg. Sea and sand blending in enchanting natural harmony, gracefully cruising boats in calm and cool river waters add to the beauty of this beach.

Kunkeshwar Temple : Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings.

Rameshwar : Some destinations own such historical peculiarities which sets them apart from other ones. Place named Achara is one of them. It’s a small village in Malvan Taluka. We are all aware that in historical times people were gifted with “Inams, Jagirs or Watan(land)” by kings or emperors for their achievements. Achara too is Inam or Jagir, but it’s owner or Inamdar (landowner) is not a layman. Chhatrapati Shambhu Raje of Kolhapur gave this Inam to Shri Dev Rameshwar ( i.e. Lord Shiva). Achara boasts the historical temple of Lord Shiva, popularly known as ‘inamdar Shri Dev Rameshwar’ Architecture of the temple is grand and spectacular.

Parshuram  Temple : In this village(Achara) there is a well known temple of Bhagwan Parshuram because of it this village got this name. Tourists who want to enjoy natural beauty of this area should reserve some time during the trip.
People here used to know time from the sound from cannon. This temple is an excellent example of ancient sculpture. The atmosphere of this temple fascinates everyone. Calm and beautiful nature and idol of Parshuram made up of black stone and other idols charming appearance take us in different world. The building of this temple is also an excellent example of architecture.

Vijay-Durg (pic Courtesy Internet)
Vijaydurga Fort : The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria" as it is situated in the village "Girye. The earlier fort encompassed area of 5 acres and was surrounded by sea on all the 4 sides. Over the years the eastern trench was reclaimed and the road was constructed theron. Presently the area of fort is about 17 acres and is surrounded by Arabian sea on its three sides. (1 acre= 4840 sq yards).
The Architectural marvel:

1) The 200m long, undersea/underland tunnel from the fort to the Dhulap’s palatial house in the village is man-made. The roof of the tunnel has been pinched to protect it from land-slides and it is also well ventilated.  Now the tunnel is partially blocked. Using latest technology if this tunnel is cleared it will be a major tourist attraction and will be of great help for architectural students/history lovers.2) The fencing compound wall constructed at 8-10 m depth undersea, 300ft from the fort is another architectural wonder. The wall constructed with laterite stones is 122 mtr long, 3 mtr high & 7 mtr in breadth. Majority of  attacking  ships met their watery grave after colliding on this wall as this wall is not visible above the sea level.

Ganpatipule :- According to a local folklore, the Hindu god, Ganapati, taking umbrage by a remark made by a native lady, moved to Pulé (a few km ahead of the town) from his original abode of Gulé.
Thus the region was named Ganpati-pulé.
400 years old Ganpati image at Ganpatipule is said to have sprung up from the soil. This deity faces the West, so as to guard the western gates, unlike deities in other Indian temples who face the east. The temple is at the base of a hill, and pilgrims walk around (pradakshina) the hill as a mark of respect.

Amboli – Heaven on the Earth

Dear All,

We at ‘Nisarg Trust’ invite you to ‘Amboli Ghat – A Herpetofauna paradise’, with an expert to guide you  from 27th– 29th July 2013 leaving 26th July night and returning 30th July early morning.

Though Amboli is emerging as a famous hill station, not many know that this place is extremely rich in Herpetofauna (Insects, Amphibians, Reptiles), wildflowers and birds. Home to myriad species of Amphibians, Amboli is a must visit place in monsoon for all the nature enthusiasts.

Seen geographically, Amboli is situated at 690m (from MSL) in “Sindhudurg” district of Maharashtra, 30 kms away from Sawantwadi which is well connected to Mumbai and Pune via road and railway. It is the wettest place in Maharashtra receiving rainfall about 7 meters every year! It has thick pristine forest around in which conditions are perfectly attained for the sustenance of several species of ‘Herpetofauna.’

Historically, Amboli village came into being as one of the staging posts along the road from Vengurla port to the city of Belgaum, which was extensively used by the British to supply their garrisons in south and central India.

The hills of Amboli village provide one of the sources of the Krishna river and an ancient Shiva temple called ‘Hiranyakeshi’, exists at the cave where the water emerges. The main attraction is the incredibly high rainfall and the numerous waterfalls and mist during the monsoons.

There are several trails and points we will try to explore around Amboli:

1.       Mahadevgad
2.       Shirgaonkar Point
3.       Kalvesad Point
4.       Parikshit Point

Goa – A Herpetofauna Paradise

Dear All,

We at ‘Nisarg Trust’ invite you to ‘Goa – A Herpetofauna paradise’, with an expert to guide you  from 2nd – 4th August 2013 leaving 1st August night and returning 5th August early morning.

Goa is India’s smallest state by area. Located in West India in the Konkan region, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the North and by Karnataka to the East and South, while the Arabian sea forms its west coast. The historic city ‘Madgaon’ still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese, who first landed in the early 16th century as merchants and conquered it soon thereafter. Goa is a former Portuguese province. The Portuguese overseas territory of Portuguese India existed for about 450 years until it was annexed by India in 1961. Though Goa is a famous tourist destination for Indians as well as foreigners, known for its beaches, places of worship, not many know that this place is extremely rich in Herpetofauna (Amphibians, Reptiles), wildflowers and birds. Home to myriad species of Amphibians, Goa - Castle rock is a must visit place in monsoon for all the nature enthusiasts.

Join us to explore these fantastic places in Goa – Tambdi Surla, Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctury, Castle Rock. Amazing nature trails, beautiful scenery, loads of Amphibians to look for, local Goan food, waterfalls, in all a perfect destination for a short holiday.

Situated in the north of Western Ghats, Bhagwan Mahavir WLS is a 240 sq km of protected area situated along the eastern border of Goa and forms a part of one of the largest contiguous patches of protected areas in the Central Western Ghats. The annual rainfall exceeds 3,000 mm. While, Castle Rock is located in the Western Ghats on Karnataka state's border with Goa at an elevation of 2,040 ft. Located at height in a heavily forested area, Castle Rock's vegetation is moist tropical deciduous and harbors a variety of Biodiversity including some amazing orchids.

Home to innumerable species of animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and medicinal plants, this region has contributed generously to our country’s bio-diversity. The valley, hemmed in at all sides, looks protected, sheltered, unexplored, and holding in its secrets. Dense brown green foliage, roots above and below, intertwined branches, creepers, and moss hanging like an afro-braid from branch after branch. Layers of fog surround us, weaving a shroud of mystery as to what lay ahead. At times the strong winds clear the path before us, unfolding a   panoramic view of the scenic forest. The walks to Tambdi Surla Temple, Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary & Castle Rock offer fantastic opportunities to explore these rich forests and also offer spectacular views of the forests, waterfalls and the valleys in the Konkan area.

Tambdi Surla temple situated at Tambdi village is historically important as the same has been built by the Hemadri, the minister of Yadava king Ramchandra during the 12th Century. It is the oldest temple in Goa, located just 13 kms from Mollem. The Jain style construction has led to debates about the origins of the temple, since the Kadamba dynasty ruled Goa between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. The temple is built in the Hemadpanthi style from basalt, carried across the mountains from the Deccan plateau and carved craftsmen. It is considered to be the only specimen of Kadamba-Yadava architecture in basalt stone preserved and available in Goa. The surrounding forest is dense and harbors quite a variety of western ghat bio-diversity. The Hump-nosed Pit Viper is especially abundant here.

The "Leeches" too are in plenty, but with leech guards and the enthusiastic spirit of the participants, coupled with the great sightings, you would not be bothering much about them.

Itinerary:

1st August 2013 at 9:30 PM: Meeting point will be decided later.

2nd August: Reach Madgaon by 9 am. Move to "Nature's Nest campsite near Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary. Lunch, Mini nature trail, Return to camp, Dinner, Night trail to the periphery of Bhagwan Mahavir WLS.

3rd August: After breakfast, another trail in Bhagwan Mahavir WLS, Lunch, Evening trail to Castle Rock area, Dinner, Night trail near the campus.

4th August: After breakfast, Tambdi Surla forest trail, Lunch, Proceed to Madgaon, Reptiles watching along the way, Leave for Mumbai, Dinner on the way. Reach Mumbai by 5th August early morning.

One day trek to ‘Ajoba’ on 28th July 2013

Dear All,

We at ‘Nisarg Trust’ invite you for one day trek to ‘Ajoba’ which is also known as ‘Aja Parvat’ near Shahapur on 28th July 2013

Minutiae:

Height: 4511 ft (Above MSL)
Grade: Medium
Time: 4 hrs from base
Location: Shahapur region.

Ajoba lies in a huge mountain range, situated to the east of Shahapur village, surrounded by Harishchandragad and Naphta to the South east, Naneghat at the South, Ghanchakkar to its East, Katrabai and Ratangad to the North side.

Ajoba is famous for the Valmiki ashram where goddess Sita was said to be staying after being separated from Lord Rama. After ascending for a while, we reach the Lav-Kush cave where a cradle is placed. One more interesting fact about Ajoba which many people do not know that the forest at Ajoba is one of the ‘Sacred Groves’ in Maharashtra.

About Sacred Groves:

Presence of such sacred groves has been documented since the early 1800s. Believing trees to be the abode of gods and ancestral spirits, many communities set aside sanctified areas of forest and established rules and customs to ensure their protection. These rules varied from grove to grove but often prohibited the felling of trees, the collection of any material from the forest floor, and the killing of animals. Presiding deities administered punishment, often death, to individuals who violated the rules, and sometimes to the entire community in the form of disease or crop failure. As a result of these protective restrictions, preserved over countless years, sacred groves are now important reservoirs of biodiversity.

Sacred groves are often the last refuge for endemic and endangered plant and animal species. They are storehouses of medicinal plants valuable to village communities as well as modern pharmacopoeia, and they contain wild relatives of crop species that can help to improve cultivated varieties. Sacred groves also provide for the water needs of nearby communities. Many sacred groves contain water resources such as ponds and streams, and the vegetative mass that covers the floor of a grove can absorb water during rainy seasons and release it during times of drought. Trees also improve soil stability, prevent topsoil erosion and provide irrigation for agriculture in drier climates.

As it is a sacred grove, it has varied flora and fauna. Hence we might get a chance to see monsoon migrant birds viz. Cuckoo, Pitta, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Also known as Three Toed Kingfisher)

Dear All,

We @ ‘Nisarg Trust’, invite you for overnight trek to ‘Rajmachi’ on 20th July and 21stJuly 2013.

Information about Rajmachi:

Height: ~2710 ft (Over MSL)
Grade: Medium
Endurance Reqd: High

Rajmachi:

Beyond our crowded cities, busy schedules and hectic lifestyles, there lies a peaceful place, located right in the laps of the Sahyadris, embraced by nature, shelled by greenery, overlooking the Konkan Coast and the Mawal plateau at the same time, a historic fort called – Rajmachi !!!

The Buddhist caves on the western slope of Rajmachi plateau, known as ‘Kondane’ caves, were carved by ‘Satvahanas’ in the period around 200 BC. The existence of these ancient caves indicates that Rajmachi had been identified as an important place right from the Buddhist period. It can also be assumed that ‘Rajmachi’ was originally built during the same period.’ Later, in 1657, Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort from ‘Adilshahi ruler.’Rajmachi was built to protect ‘Bor Ghat’ in the surrounding region which was used to transport unloaded goods from Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Nalasopara ports to Pune region.

It is a unique fort having wide plateau on all sides of the twin citadels. Rajmachi(Udhewadi) village is situated on the same plateau. There are two citadels, ‘Shrivardhan’ and ‘Manaranjan’ situated on Rajmachi. There is a rich treasure of historical monuments on Rajmachi, viz. mighty ramparts and walls, gateways, secret exit gates, remnants of administrative offices, water storage tanks and reservoirs, remnants of residential quarters, temples and idols of deities. ‘Kalbhairav’ temple is situated in the col between Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. Local inhabitants worship ‘Kalbhairav’ even today.

A big water reservoir constructed about 200 years ago is situated to the South of Rajmachi village. The route to the lake goes through the dense forest. A carved stone plate in the wall of the water reservoir indicates that it was built by Ramrav Narayanrav Deshmukh, Mamlatdar of Danda Rajpuri. An ancient Shiva temple, built in Hemdpanthi style, is situated on the western side of the water reservoir.

Rajmachi offers excellent views of Borghat, Shiravta and Valvand dam, Manjarsumbha, Dhak fort, Lohagad, Visapur, Tung, Tikona, Kothaligad, Bhimashankar hills. Route towards Rajmachi from Lonavla offers excellent views as we encounter many waterfalls on the way.

Hey rangers, here comes the most awaited trek of this season, !!

Monsoon is in full swing, and so is the trekking passion, and every true trekker wants to visit the heart of sahyadri in this magical period,
Here is Wild Rangers trek to Harishchandra Gad on 27-28 July,2013.
Come and join us.

Brief Information about Harishchandra gad:
Region: Malshej
Fort Height: 4510 ft.
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Mode of Transport: Public Transport
Trek Leader:- Mayyur, Deepak,
Guidance and other help:- Bhaskar Badad.

The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in 6th century, during the rule of Kalchuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves are idols of Lord Vishnu. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas, they are not related to Ayodhya. Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic “Tatvasaar”), used to meditate here in 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort and those existing the surrounding region point to the existence of diverse cultures here. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar (in Khireshwar village), in the Harishchandreshwar temple and in the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period, since it is related to Shaiva, Shakta or Naath. Later the fort was under the control of Moguls. The Marathas captured it in 1747. The last warrior named Joshi became a martyr in the fight against the English in 1818.
