Hey Mates, Get ready for fun as we at Trek Mates India organise a Dolphin Safari & Tour to Dapoli – Murud - Harnai - Anjarle and the Surrounding Region on 11th and 12th October ’2014 (Leaving on Friday 10th Night).

Some information about the area:

The places that will be visiting are:

1. Dapoli.

2. Anjarle Beach
3. Harnai Beach
4. Kadyawarcha Ganpati
5. Fishing Village @ Harnai
6. Suvarnadurg  Fort
7. Dolphin Safari
8. Water Sports (Optional)

Dapoli
Dapoli is 215 km away from Mumbai. It is also called the "Mini Mahabaleshwar" (Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in Maharashtra) because of its cool climate throughout the year. Dapoli is also the city which gave birth to many historic idols including Lokmanya Tilak, Sane Guruji, Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, Wrangler Paranjape, and Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar. It is close to the Arabian Sea (approx 8 km away) and acts as the main town (Taluka Headquarters) for several other small surrounding villages such as Anjarle, Sarang, Bhopan, Harnai, Dabhol, Navse (Bharti Ship Yard), Unhavare, Jaalgaon, Gimhavane, Asud, Vanand, Kherdi, Karde, Murud and Umberghar. Jaalgaon, a village in Dapoli, was awarded the "sant gadgebaba gram swachatta" award for cleanest village by the Maharashtra government. Dapoli is nowadays developing as a tourist destination due its climate, tourist places, beaches, and scenery.Dapoli is separated from the Sayhadri range by the Khed taluka. Dapoli has a seaboard of 50 km which stretches from Burondi, Kelshi to Dabhol. The coastline differs little in its general characteristics from that of other parts of Kokan. It is densely covered by coconut farms. The principal rivers are Bharja in the north and Vashishthi in the south. There is also a small river called Jog which flows through Sarang, Tadil, and into the Arabian sea.Despite being only 7 km away from the coast of Arabian sea, the town is located at an altitude of around 800 feet (240 m).Dapoli was the first Nagar Panchayat in India.

Murud  Beach

Located on the rugged Konkan coastline, Murud is a small town about 11km from Dapoli. A long, scenic stretch of a beach with swaying palms and a beautiful, ancient Durga Devi temple are its primary attractions. It is also known as Murud - Harnai.
Murud has a lot of beach resorts amidst the coconut plantations. Delicious, fresh seafood includes the likes of Pomfret, Kingfish (Surmai) and Prawns straight from the Arabian Sea. You can also enjoy pure vegetarian, home-made Konkani cuisine at some of the houses nearby. The beach itself with its soft sand and wide expanses is well suited for walking, jogging or simply freaking out. You will probably be able to watch the white bellied sea eagle, white backed vultures and sea gulls. Olive Ridley sea turtles are also spotted here.
Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, who established the first Indian University for women (SNDT), hailed from Murud. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1958. You can also visit the museum which is dedicated to this great man.

Harnai Beach
A very quiet beach, highly attractive for meditation, Harnai beach is renowned as the gateway romantic beach in Harnai. The inflows of the tourists are growing multitudes year by year in this unspoiled beauty of nature.

This beach is famed for its clean softy shores and safe waters for fun filled activities as well as for swimming. The palm trees lined up adds a scenic natural greenish background for the calm beach. It is really an experience spending few hours to few days in the cool ambience of beach. This is a weekend destination to many of the Mumbai and Pune populace to escape from the busy city life.
Anjarle  Kadyawarcha Ganpati
Anjarle is a village in the Dapoli taluka, Ratnagiri district and is known for the Kadyawarcha Ganpati temple (कड्याचा गणपती) which means Ganapati on a cliff. This temple was originally constructed using wooden pillars around 1150. It was renovated between 1768 to 1780. Until the recent construction of bridge across the Anjarle creek and the building of a road up to the temple, pilgrims had to cross Anjarle creek (Jog River) in a boat, before climbing the hill using steps which pass through Anjarle village.

Fishing Village @ Harnai
Harnai port is the main fishing village. Every evening hundreds of fishing boats come back after fishing and gather to auction their catch. The fish auction is the essential trade step between fish landings and the trade. Business worth lakhs of rupees is carried out daily between 4 pm to 7 pm. Witnessing the fish auctions here is a awe inspiring experience and you could also hitch a ride in a bullock cart here!!
Harnai port should be one of the essential part of any Dapoli vacation not just for the auctions. You could vist the Kanakdurg fort with a lighthouse offering splendid views of the ocean Suvarnadurg fort and the fishing village. You can also visit the historic Suvarnadurg fort from here and enjoy a boat ride too!

Suvarnadurg FortSuvarnadurg Fort, also known as Harnai Bunder, lies off the beautiful Harnai coast. It is a small sea port built by great emperor Shivaji to effectively counter the attacks by Sindhis. Of late the fort had been converted to a ship building port in Maharashtra.
The Fort was exceptional in its appearance; most of the parts are in ruins. It brings the remembrance of the construction abilities of Maratha architects. It is a fort visited by many tourists, especially those who are fond of architecture, history and archeology.

Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek & Wildlife Excursion on 19th September 2014 for 2 nights by OneLife Adventa

OneLife Adventa brings to you a unique trek to Dudhsagar Falls on the Goa-Karnataka border. It is a track-trek because you will be trekking through the railway tracks of Konkan railway with breath-taking views of the valley and the falls. Along with the trek, we will be also spending a day at the Margao city in Goa. The trip also includes a wildlife excursion to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary where birdwatchers will get a real treat.

About Dudhsagar Waterfalls – Dudhsagar Falls (literally Sea of Milk) is a 4 tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa on Goa's border with Karnataka state. It is 60 km from Panaji city by road and 46 km from Madgaon railway junction by train.
The waterfall is located in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wild Life Sanctuary at Collem in South Goa in the Western Ghats. The waterfall is on the border of Karnataka and Goa states. The roads leading to it are maintained by the Goa Forest Department.
Legend has it that a beautiful princess lived in the forest (near present day Dudhsagar Falls) in a palace. She loved and enjoyed bathing in a lake nearby and used to drink "sweetened milk" from her "golden jug" after finishing with her bath. One day while enjoying her jug of milk she found herself being watched by a prince, who was standing amongst the trees. Red with embarrassment at her inadequate bathing attire, she poured the jug of milk in front of him to form an improvised curtain to hide her body while the maids rushed to cover her with her dress. It is said that it is that sweetened milk that cascades down the mountain slope as Dudhsagar Falls to this day as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess.

Dudhsagar is one of the world's most exquisite falls. It lies high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are not particularly spectacular during the dry season. During the monsoon season however, the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India. Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's fifth tallest waterfall and is 227th in the world at 310 m. The water plummets hundreds of metres (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa. It is a major part of the Goa ecosystem. It is a four-tiered waterfall with a total height of 310 metres (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 metres (100 feet).

Dear All,

We @ Shikhar Vedh has arranged a much awaited Trekkers Paradise-Harishchandrgad via Nalichi Waat  Ascend Trek on 11-12th Oct 2014 ...

Hope 2 cu on trek with me to NJoy again

Brief Introduction about Harishchandragad:

Height: 1412 meters (4510 feet)
Grade:Tough+Thrill
Time: ~ 8 hrs from Belpada, Base Village
Location: Nagar region

Harishchandragad: The fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the Medieval period. The Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.

Taramati:
This is the topmost point on the fort. It is the second highest peak in Maharashtra after kalsubai. Leopards are seen in the forests beyond this peak. From here we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad.

Konkan Kada:
The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.

Kedareshwar: The cave of Kedareshwar has a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water.

Raireshwar :- Tableland of Pachgani is very famous but higher and longer tableland is the plateau of Rayari. It is 8 km away from Bhor. It looks beautiful in monsoon. Raireshwar was considered to develop as a hill station & in real sense it is hill station.  Raireshwar is historically important, Shivaji Maharaj took the Oath of Swaraj in a temple of Lord Shiva. After this he kept on conquering forts and established Swaraj. This temple is situated rather deep in the interior, hence not seen in first glance. A temple surrounded by hills, surroundings covered by natural beauties. Stone structured temple of the 16th century is the main attraction of Raireshwar. Kenjalgad  is situated on the Mandhardev spur of the Mahadev range eleven miles north-west of Wai. It is a flat-topped hill of an irregular oval shape, about 250 yards long and one hundred yards wide. .Brief Introduction about Rajgad / Torna:-

    Height:  4182 ft / 4200 ft
    Grade:  Medium/Medium
Time: ~ Maximum 2 / 3 hrs from base villages Gunjavane / Velhe
    Location: Pune

RAJGAD  The name describes the place itself. The King of all the forts.
It is to the south-west 40 Kms from Pune. It boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji on any fort. He spent almost 25/30 yrs here. Rajgad is famous for its construction. The fort can be divided into four different parts based on geographical terrain and fortification. These are the three sub-plateaux (Machee) namely Padmavati Machee, Suvela Machee and Sanjevani Machee, and at the centre is the Ballekilla.

Padmavati Machee (north end) : This machee is the site of Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake, Chor Darwaja, Pali Darwaja, Gunjavane Darwaja, Daru Kothar (storage of arms and ammunition), Diwankhana, Rajwada (ruins), Ghod Tale (Horse Lake), Sadar (office) and Dhalkathi (flag hoisting place).

Sanjeevani Machee (southwest/west end) : This huge, beautiful and royally constructed machee faces west and has a three-stepped (layered) fortified structure. Each of the lower levels is separated from the higher one by a fortified bastion with a gate that could be defended independently. The lowest level is beautifully fortified by double curtain walls (chilkhathi) separated by a deep trench, on average 12 feet across. One can walk between these walls. The outer wall has openings to let soldiers out for sudden attack.

Suvela Machee (south east) : This is another grand machee facing east with lots of secret routes and doorways. This one is a double-stepped fortified machee with the steps separated by a beautiful bastioned doorway. At the end of first step a hole cuts across the rock; one can sit in this hole (nedhe). The final (lowest) step like Sanjeevani Machee has a double curtain wall. To the south side of this machee one can see a beautiful triangular bastion called Kaleswari buruz having an escape door near it. The home of the renowned military leader Tanaji Malusare was in this machee.

Bale Killa (centre) : This is the highest part of the fort which has remains of palaces, water cisterns and caves. It has a beautiful entrance door called Mahadarwaja. One can view the whole fort and the vast surrounding expanse.

TORNA :- The fort is also known as Prachandagad (huge fort), due to its massive size. In 1646, when Shivaji was 16, he launched his first military attack by capturing Torna fort, paving the way for the great empire. Many battles have been fought on this fort. The fort is truly grand and stretches for couple of kilometers.

    Fascinating points on Torna fort:

    Goddess Toranjai:
it is a simple temple where goddesses Somjai and Toranjai are worshiped. Ahead we can see the lakes toran and mhasoba.

Maal and Safeli Bastions: On the west of Kothji Darwaja are the bastion maal, and the latter one is to the south of the former. Near Safeli is the construction called lakadkhaana, where wood was stored. Here is the way to Kokan Darwaja and Budhla Machi.

Budhla Machi: In Marathi ‘budhla’ means vessel, and budhla machi looks like a vessel kept upside down. This cliff is a breathtaking spot on the fort.

Bini Darwaja: This is the main entrance to the fort from velhe and is situated to the northwest of the fort. The bastion on the left side has collapsed. The path ahead leadsto the Kothi Darwaja.

Kothi Darwaja: Ascending the steps carved in the rock, we enter the Kothi Darwaja facing east. Here we come across some guard rooms. Way along the wall towards east takes us to the temple of goddess Toranjai.

Hanuman Bastion: This bastion is situated to the east of Kothi Darwaja. Here we can see the idol of hanuman facing south and a flag post. The way ahead leads to the bastion Bhel. Further eastwards we come to Zunjar Machi.

Temple of goddess Mengai: this is the only place on the fort where one can stay. It has two doors and the roof is stillin the needs of repairs. In front of the temple is a Deepmala.

Zunjar Machi: It is situated on the western side & a wonderful spot to see.

    Vijaydurg or Victory Fort:

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria" as it is situated in the village "Girye". Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.
Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.
    Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan

    Sindhudurga - Padmagad forts:
Huge sea rocks of Malvan has easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory. The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 shivaji erected this fort on 44 acers of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is 'Shri Shivarajeshwar temple' of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess 'Bhavani Temple'. Impressions of shivaji's fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall . Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

    Tarkarli Beach

Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

    Snorkeling:

is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins.  Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort.Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipmentInline image 3

Treks and Trails India invites you for a One day trek to Bhimashankar near Mumbai on this weekend 5th October 2014

    Height: 3296 feet
    Grade: Medium
Time: Approx. 4.5 hrs from Khandas, Base Village
    Location: Nagar District
    Cost 700.00 per persson

    Places to See:-
Lord Shiva Temple: Bhimashankar Temple is located in the village of Bhorgiri 50 km North West of Khed, near Pune. There is a beautiful temple of Lord Shiva which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. It is a modest yet graceful temple and it dates back to mid 18th century. The shikhara of the temple was built by Nana Phadnavis. This temple is closely associated with the legend of Shivaraj Khade slaying the demon Tripurasura associated with the invincible flying citadels Tripuras. Shiva is said to have taken abode in the Bhima form, upon the request of the Gods, on the crest of the Sahyadri hills, and the sweat that poured forth from his body after the battle is said to have formed the Bhimarathi River. Bhimashankar is also the source of the Bhima River, which flows south east and merges with the Krishna River near Raichur.

A big size bell in Hemadpanthi structure: - Built by Nana Phadanavis is also a feature of Bhimashankar. Other equally important places: - Hanuman Lake, Gupt Bhimashankar, Sakshi Vinayak, Origin of River Bhima, Nag Phani from where one can see the view of the Peth fort and Padhar, Bombay Point, and lot more. Bhimashankar is conserved forest area and wildlife sanctuary where a variety of birds, animals, flowers, plants can be seen. A rare animal "Shekru" can be found in deep woods. Bhimashankar is worth visited for jungle lovers and trekkers as well as for pilgrims.

    Routes to Bhimashankar:-
There are two routes to Bhimashankar from the base village of Khandas, which are most popular among trekkers.
    1. Ganesh Ghat – There is a bridge around 2 km from Khandas, and the track going to the right from the bridge is the Ganesh Ghat route. This is the easiest and the longest route to Bhimashankar. Within an hour of trekking along this route you will reach a Ganesh temple. The route ahead will take around 3 hours until you reach the plateau of Bhimashankar, there is a small pond dug out in the ground called 'Hanuman Tal'. This trek is four hours to five hours long.
    2. Shidi (ladder) Route – This one is a shorter route, but difficult especially in the monsoons. The route gets its name from the ladders placed on the steepest parts. The route going to the left of the bridge (mentioned in Ganesh Ghat) goes to the village. On moving ahead you will reach a well, take a left from there to Shidi ghat. Within the first two hours of climbing you will pass three ladders. You will reach a junction where both the routes - Ganesh ghat and Shidi – merge. There are many huts providing food and tea in middle of trek route. A further 1 ½ hour trek takes us besides a pond. The road, which goes to the left from this pond, takes us to the temple.

Fascinating Spot:- Bhimashankar Temple, Gupt Bhima, Hanuman Lake, Nagfani (the highest point)
