Rules and regulations.
Do understand that we do not arrange picnics. It follows that if one seeks luxury and absolute comfort then we can hardly help them.

Sa-Hi Trekkers believe in being one with nature and that is possible only when we shed all city slicker attitudes. Of course by that we do not suggest that one should be ready for any kind of nonsense.
Utmost care is taken to ensure safety of the group and care is taken that no one is inconvenienced because of factors within our control.
We do expect our Sa-hi friends to understand group dynamics and leave at home their individuality. They should be prepared to share and care. That makes and all the physical and mental exhaustion forgettable and the trek itself become unforgettable! Trust us on this.
Now some basic codes:
Respect nature.
1) No littering! Carry your own trash. If you are found littering then we will request you to pick it up. Friends, it is really not nice to throw garbage around and it only reflects upon us. Will we do this to our own houses?
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!
2) Do not disturb the flora and fauna. No making pretty bouquets of grabbed flowers and blooms. No feeding and intimidating birds and other animals. Think how you would feel if someone barges into your house and threatens you. The jungle is THEIR home. So, Capital N O= NO!
3) Remember, the mountain has own mind. Beware and do not make the mistake of taking him for granted. It sounds weird but it’s true. Never take nature as granted.
For your own safety
1) The organizers and you yourself are equally responsible for your safety. We cannot take the blame for injuries or inconveniences arising out of actions outside the organizers instructions and acts of nature.
2) One must understand that the group leader is responsible for the entire group and may have to take some tough decisions at times. If one expects a memorable experience with us then we expect full cooperation and discipline. To sum up, the leader’s decision will be final and binding on all Sahi Trekkers.
3) Finally, the non-arguable part. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use and alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during trek.

Safety measure is to be followed on strict basis; anybody not following will be discarded on the spot.

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a Tour to VELAS specially for the Turtle festival on 29 - 30 March 2014

Some information about the area: The places that will be visiting are:
1. Velas Beach - Turtle Festival visit
2. Bankot Fort
3. Harihareshwar Temple

Velas Beach :  Velas is the birth place of Nana Phadnis, one of the great prominent personalities in Maratha history. Due to the sea-shore Velas is an existing place and it is situated near Bankot Bay. There is an old temple of Shri Bhairi- Rameshwar and in this temple all twelve months water is made available taking the benefit of favorable geographical conditions. A statue of Nana Phadnis is present outside his house. In Velas Mahalakshmi temple and Nana Phadnis house are the places to visit. Velas is also one of the popular breeding sites of Olive Ridley, which is an endangered species of turtle.

Bankot Fort:

Region: Mandangad
District: Ratnagiri
Height: Sea fort (Slightly above sea level)
Difficulty: Simple

Bankot is a square shaped fort. On the sides of Bankot fort, there is a dry moat (Revni) dug out in the Jambhya stone. Jambhya stone is peculiar type of stone adorning a purple shade and peculiarly it is incapable of storing water as the water invariable percolates through it owing to its much porous nature. The main entrance (Mahadarwaja) of the fort is north-facing with a well sculpted arch and carvings. Watch guards dug out (Devdya) align on both sides of the Mahadarwaja with some pits being dug out in the right Devdi. On the left, there are steps leading towards Nagarkhana while there is an underground storey and a tunnel on the right. A Maruti idol in the centre stands deserted now. On the west, there is a small entrance (Darwaja) leading to a Bastion on the exterior of the fortifications. A deep well (now dry and filled) occupied the centre of this bastion earlier and the adjacent water tanks too are dry and obsolete now. One can leave the Buruj via a small exit that leads to the surrounding moat and a beautiful “Revni” lying nearby.

About Velas:
Velas is a small coastal village in Rathnagiri District of Maharashtra. Olive Ridleys are the smallest of the sea turtles and they got their name because of their olive coloured shells. Though these are the most abundant species of turtles in any ocean, they are yet classified as endangered species. Often people kill these turtles for their shells, meat and mostly for the eggs. People belonging to the shores where these turtles hatch their eggs, call the phenomenon as “Arribada”.
“Arribada” is the process of Olive Ridleys gathering along the seashores in thousands, to lay eggs and hatch them. There are some famous places where millions of Olive Ridleys participate in Arribada along the shores of Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. One such place is ‘Velas beach’ and a couple of other villages where the beach stretches. The Olive Ridleys migrate across thousands of kilometers to lay eggs on these shores every year. About 20 – 60 nests are found every year onshore Velas beach.
Velas Turtle Festival is an event organized by two non-profit NGO called ‘Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra’ and ‘Kasav Mitra Mandal’. People, local and visitors, gather together along the shores when the eggs laid by the adult female Oliver Ridleys hatch. The above NGOs have joined hands with Forest Department and Marine Turtle Conservation centre of the state to preserve the eggs from becoming preys to birds, small animals, crabs, snakes, etc. After guarding them till a reporting of an egg hatching occurs, people gather at this beach to take the young turtles in their hands and leave it in the sea water. This extra-ordinary event is called as “Velas Turtle Festival”.
Velas is also known for the birth place of Nana Phadnavis, a great Indian diplomat.
Bankot Sea Fort :
Bankot stands at the mouth of Bankot creek, where Savitri river (originating from Mahabaleshwar) meets the Arabian Sea. Bankot creek was a major sea trade route, and the ancient caves of Dasgaon and Mandangad are the evidence of the same. Bankot fort is also known as Himmatgad & Victoria Fort.

Harihareshwar:

Surrounded by four holy hills Harihar, Harshinachal, Bramhadri and Pushpadri Harihareshwar is a region in Konkan which is amazingly beautiful with hills playing the perfect foil for long stretch of pristine beach. The Harihareshwar temple built in the 16th century with the deities of Vishnu Brahma and Shiva is the primary attraction in Harihareshwar along with beautiful stretch of beach.

Breakfree Journeys goes camping and trekking to Kalavantindurg! 30-31st March 2014

$

Worldwide, Kalavantindurg is the most sought after treks in the Bombay region. Located close to Panvel, the climb to the top on its rock cut steps can be quite thrilling! But that's not all that we would be doing on this trip!

There's camping, barbeque and stargazing on an open plateau overlooking the valley too!

So, here's the plan

Meet up at Panvel Railway station on Sunday at 4 pm and head to the base village on a tum-tum (8 seater auto). Hike up in the golden light of the evening sun and reach Prabalgadmachi just before sunset. A camp will be set up and preparations will be made to start the bareque! That's not all, a hot locally cooked lunch will be served soon after!

As the night progresses, there will be star gazing sessions, music, coffee and some more games as we tuck into our sleeping bags waiting for the crack of dawn. In the morning, at the first ray of light we will begin our expedition to conquer the summit! We will back at basecamp by 9 and after a hearty breakfast, bid adieu to Prabalmachi to head home!

Cost: Rs. 900 inclusive of Evening snacks, Dinner and Breakfast, barbeque, to and fro transport from Panvel station, guide charges.

A maximum of 15 participants will be allowed on the trek.

We normally do not accept advance payments and rely on your oral/written confirmation to block seats. Therefore it is advisable that you consult your prior commitments before confirming a seat rather than cancelling/backing out at the last moment much to inconvenience of everybody.

Kindly note:

1. We recommend Action Trekking Shoes; running/gym shoes normally give away to the tough terrain and become useless.

2. Carry at least 2 litres of water, sleeping mat, bag with you along with some dry snacks, fruits and a pair of change.

3. Consumption of Alcohol, Narcotic substances and cigarettes is prohibited and may lead to possible expulsion from the trek, and an early expulsion from Natural Habitat.

4. Hats/Caps are recommended.

To confirm, do call us up on 09820023362

Vijaydurg or Victory Fort:

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria" as it is situated in the village "Girye". Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.
Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.
Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan

Sindhudurga - Padmagad forts:
Huge sea rocks of Malvan has easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory. The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 shivaji erected this fort on 44 acers of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is 'Shri Shivarajeshwar temple' of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess 'Bhavani Temple'. Impressions of shivaji's fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall . Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

Tarkarli Beach

Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

Snorkeling:

is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins.  Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort.Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipmentInline image 3

!! 13th April 2014 !!
Short Info: Bhigwan is a small dusty town on the border of Pune and Solapur district in Central Maharashtra, in India. Bhigwan is located on the Pune-Solapur Highway. South of Bhigwan town, exists a widespread backwater formed due to a man made dam built on the Bhima river. The dam is called as Ujni dam. The backwaters is spread over a wide region and is mainly a shallow waste water reserve. There are two areas where one can see the migratory water birds. 1) Diksal-Parewadi area and 2) Dalaj – Kumbharwadi area. The semi-waste water in this Ujni dam backwater area has built very good wetland based ecosystem and helped agriculture also. The rainfall in Pune region decides the water level in Ujani dam. March is the best season to visit Bhigwan as by that time most of the migratory birds arrive and settle down. One can expect various types of Ducks, Herons, Egrets, Raptors and Waders along with flocks of hundreds of flamingos. The huge quantity of birds at Bhigwan increases the chance of sighting almost all the prime bird species there and also creates great photographic opportunities for wildlife photographers. The best part of these outings is that we are also including the famous Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary in our itinerary. Its a small patch of forest at Supa village, also known as Supa Grasslands and is a great place to observe and photograph the Indian Gazelles.

Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the new year for Maharashtrians, was celebrated with much pomp and fanfare in the city on Monday. Men and women dressed in saffron turbans and navvari (nine-yard ) saris danced to the beats of the lezim , dhol and cymbals, while the streets were decorated with colourful rangolis.

Gudi Padwa, also known as Ugadi, is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, which, according to the Gregorian calendar would fall sometime at the end of March and the beginning of April. This festival is supposed to mark the beginning of 'Vasant' or spring.

In the predominantly Marathi-speaking townships of Thane, Dombivli and Kalyan , the cultural carnival began on Sunday with the lighting of earthen lamps at Masunda Lake. The festivities were flagged off by Thane mayor, after garlanding the statue of Shivaji at Masunda lake. A palanquin of Lord Kopineswar was taken around the area with devotees shouting slogans of '' Jai Bhawani, Jai Shivaji''. Residents held parades of floats depicting the culture and traditions of the Maharashtrian community.

The whole of Maharashtra celebrates the New Year on Gudi Padwa every year. It is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the Hindu calendar. This day is also known as Kalash Sthapana . On this day the most important thing is the hoisting of flags on a bamboo staff. A bright green or yellow cloth adorned with brocade (zari) is tied to the tip of a long bamboo over which gathi (a type of sweet), neem leaves, a twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers is tied. This is then hoisted by placing a silver or copper pot placed in the inverted position over it. The village ladies clean their house and platter it from the cow dung mixed with mud. Ladies and girls of the village make beautiful designs with special powder of soft, white stone (rangolis) are drawn on the floor in front of it.

SHIKHAR VEDH :: ' Turtle Festival Tour' to Velas on 5-6 April 2014 (Batch-4)

$

0
Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a Tour to VELAS specially for the Turtle festival on 5 - 6 April 2014 (Batch-4)

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a Tour to VELAS specially for the Turtle festival on 12 - 13rd March 2014 (Batch-5)
