"Wild Rangers" Tour to Velas Turtle Festival 22-23 March 2014 (21st Mar night travel)

We at Wild Rangers arranged tour to Velas Turtle Festival,  Bankot Fort, Harihareshwar Beach

Velas Turtle Festival 2014
Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra, in joint collaboration with the Forest Department, Ratnagiri, Kasav Mitra Mandal Velas and the Velas Gram Panchayat is organising Turtle Festival. The event will be held until the emergence of hatchlings continues. The erratic climatic conditions, including the late onset of winter, have made it difficult to predict the exact dates on which the turtle hatchlings will emerge. Hence, tourists should check the website or the facebook page to get the latest updates on the dates of emergence before visiting. The sites will be updated twice daily. Once the hatchlings begin emerging from the nests, they do so for the subsequent two days, on which they may be viewed.

Bankot
This was the first residency of the British Raj in Southern Konkan. Although a very beautiful fort dotting the coastline of the Konkan strip, the fort of Himmatgad, now popularly known as Bankot (from the name of nearby village) is not a destination thronged by the tourists. There are couple of reasons attributable to its secluded status. One is that there is very little awareness and historical significance associated with Bankot and other is absence of any major township in the nearby areas contributing to lack of quality accommodation facilities. However, there is no denying that Bankot is a very beautiful fort and surely worth a visit.

Harihareshwar
One of the finest sea shores in India, Harihareshwar is a nice tourist destination located in the Konkan coast in Maharashtra. Harihareshwar is renowned for its tranquility and picturesque beach. Harihareshwar is also known as Dakshin Kashi by virtue of its importance in the spiritual arena of India, especially with an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Harihareshwar, as the name suggest is an abode of Lord Shiva.

TMI : Dudhsagar Jungle Trek and Camping at the top of Dudhsagar waterfall(Goa) on 18th to 20th April 2014.

Visit the Legendary Waterfall of India with Trek Mates India –  Dudhsagar Jungle Trek and Camping at the top of Dudhsagar Waterfall(Goa) on 18th to 20th April 2014.

Dudhsagar is one of the world's most exquisite falls. It lies high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are so spectacular during the monsoon season when the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India. Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's fifth tallest waterfall and is 227th in the world at 310 m. The water plummets hundreds of meters (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa.

Max Participants : 30
There is also a legend associated with this waterfall. It is believed that a beautiful princess lived in the forest (near present day Dudhsagar Falls) in a palace. She loved and enjoyed bathing in a lake nearby and used to drink "sweetened milk" from her "golden jug" after finishing with her bath. One day while enjoying her jug of milk she found herself being watched by a prince, who was standing amongst the trees. Red with embarrassment at her inadequate bathing attire, she poured the jug of milk in front of him to form an improvised curtain to hide her body while the maids rushed to cover her with her dress. It is said that it is that sweetened milk that cascades down the mountain slope as Dudhsagar Falls to this day as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess.
(View from Dudhsagar Waterfall Top)

This is equally scenic but less popular route. One has to get down at Kuhlem (Collem) railway station and walk towards the falls which is about 11 km away. It normally takes 2–3 hours to reach. The famous photograph of Trains passing through before the waterfalls can be seen in this route and also the complete stretch of the falls will be visible while you hike towards the waterfalls.

Hello Friends,

We at Trek O Phy, invite you to for  K2S Moonlight Trek (Katraj Ghat to Sinhgad Fort) on 22-23 March 2014.

Katraj to Sinhagad is a very popular trek route close to Pune which starts from the Katraj ghats (Old Katraj tunnel) lying to the south of Pune and ends at Sinhagad which is to the South – west of Pune.

The route travels through a series of mountains which one has to cross before finally getting to Sinhagad. It is one of the medium grade trek which will definitely test your stamina a little but the cold night with Moon-light makes it less exhausting & very much pleasant.

The Final destination Sinhagad (The Lion's Fort) is famous for many important battles, most notably the battle of Sinhagad in 1670. It is strategically located at the center of a string of other forts such as Rajgad, Torna along with Khadakwasla Dam which can be viewed from the top of the fort.

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a Tour to VELAS specially for the Turtle festival on 22 - 23rd March 2014

Some information about the area: The places that will be visiting are:
1. Velas Beach - Turtle Festival visit
2. Bankot Fort
3. Harihareshwar Temple

Velas Beach :  Velas is the birth place of Nana Phadnis, one of the great prominent personalities in Maratha history. Due to the sea-shore Velas is an existing place and it is situated near Bankot Bay. There is an old temple of Shri Bhairi- Rameshwar and in this temple all twelve months water is made available taking the benefit of favorable geographical conditions. A statue of Nana Phadnis is present outside his house. In Velas Mahalakshmi temple and Nana Phadnis house are the places to visit. Velas is also one of the popular breeding sites of Olive Ridley, which is an endangered species of turtle.

Bankot Fort:

Region: Mandangad
District: Ratnagiri
Height: Sea fort (Slightly above sea level)
Difficulty: Simple

Bankot is a square shaped fort. On the sides of Bankot fort, there is a dry moat (Revni) dug out in the Jambhya stone. Jambhya stone is peculiar type of stone adorning a purple shade and peculiarly it is incapable of storing water as the water invariable percolates through it owing to its much porous nature. The main entrance (Mahadarwaja) of the fort is north-facing with a well sculpted arch and carvings. Watch guards dug out (Devdya) align on both sides of the Mahadarwaja with some pits being dug out in the right Devdi. On the left, there are steps leading towards Nagarkhana while there is an underground storey and a tunnel on the right. A Maruti idol in the centre stands deserted now. On the west, there is a small entrance (Darwaja) leading to a Bastion on the exterior of the fortifications. A deep well (now dry and filled) occupied the centre of this bastion earlier and the adjacent water tanks too are dry and obsolete now. One can leave the Buruj via a small exit that leads to the surrounding moat and a beautiful “Revni” lying nearby.

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a one day trip to Induri Fort / Sangramdurg & A Tribute Visit 2 Vadu-Tulapur, on Sunday 30 March 2014

Brief Introduction about Induri / Sangramdurg: -
Height: ~ 1750 ft

Induri Fort is situated in Talegaon-Dabadhe village. The "Induri Fort" was built by Sarsenapati Khanderao Yesajirao Dabhade in 1720-21. The fort also had a mint (Coin) in it. The temple of Goddess Kadjai is also in the fort. Fort has around 9-10 bastions, Entrance door, Rooms with different types of carvings. The Goddess was got in the Sarsenapati Dabhade Family by Ambikabaisaheb (d/o Shitole Family of Patas) after her marriage to Sarsenapati Yashwantrao Dabhade Ist}
.
Sangram Durg is situated at Chakan, Pune. It is a land fort. Firangoji Narsala was a renowned Maratha warrior and military leader in the army of Shivaji Maharaj. He is famous for his defence of this fort against a Mughal army led by Shayeste Khan in 1660. Firangoji was a 'Killedar' (garrison commander) of this fort in Chakan (Pune). When Shayeste Khan invaded Pune with a lakh of soldiers, he selected Sangram Durga as the first target. He attacked the fort with 10,000 soldiers. Firangoji Narsala was prepared for this attack, however, even though he had only 200 soldiers. Just before this attack Shivaji had asked his commander to leave the fort. However, Firangoji decided not to abandon the fort and instead started a fierce guerrilla war against the Mughals and defended the fort in this way for almost two months.  Chakan Fort is situated in Chakan on National Highway 50. The last Maratha – British war took place here. The fort is in a ruined state now.

A Tribute visit at Vadu - Tulapur :
 जगावे कसे ह्याचा आदर्श घालून देते शिवचरित्र आणि मृत्यूचा आदर्श देई शंभूचरित्र ...

A article for the same is here

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a one day trip to Padamdurg (KASA FORT) oSunday 6 April 2014

Padmadurg, also known as Kasa fort, is a fort in Maharashtra, India. It was built by the great Maratha ruler King Shivaji to the northwest of the fort Janjira. It was built mainly to conquer the fort Janjira, although it is not as big as Janjira. Due to incomplete construction, and bombardment from Janjira during its construction, only ruins of the Padmadurg fort remain.

It looks great from Janjira. When Shivaji the Great decided o take on the Siddis of Janjira, his admiral, Daulat Khan, built this fort on an island next to Janjira. The rock, on which the fort was built, was called Kasa and the fort was named Padmadurg. The fort has six bastions, some of them devastated by gun attack from the famous ‘kalal bangdi’ gun in Janjira. Kasa was soon overpowered by Siddis and used as a Jail.

"Wild Rangers" Tour to Velas Turtle Festival 29-30 March 2014 (28th Mar night travel)

Short Info
Birthplace of A Great Warrior…
This fort has lot to tell.  A glorious history, amazing geography and scenic view.  Shivneri, a birth place of Chhatrapati Shivaji (1630), is located at a distance of around 3 km from Junnar (125 km from Pune). Shahaji, father of Shivaji kept his wife Jijabai in this fort during her pregnancy, as the fort was unique and difficult to reach. It is easier to reach the fort by the normal road than to climb from the hills. One has to get through 7 doors before reaching the actual fort. This fort is a very big structure with a very good height. The old and beautiful ‘Devi Shivai’ temple is on the way. Shivaji was taken from the name of this goddess. Shivaji spent his childhood on this fort. Shivaji Maharaj acquired all the skills and training on this fort which they used while establishing Swarajya. He learnt the early lessons of Swarajya on this fort.

1.     Velas Beach

3.    Harihareshwar Temple & Beach
4.    Pali Ballaleshwar Temple (One of the Ashtavinayak Ganesh)

About Velas Turtle Festival:

Velas is a small coastal village in Rathnagiri District of Maharashtra. Olive Ridleys are the smallest of the sea turtles and they got their name because of their olive coloured shells. Though these are the most abundant species of turtles in any ocean, they are yet classified as endangered species. Often people kill these turtles for their shells, meat and mostly for the eggs. People belonging to the shores where these turtles hatch their eggs, call the phenomenon as “Arribada”.
“Arribada” is the process of Olive Ridleys gathering along the seashores in thousands, to lay eggs and hatch them. There are some famous places where millions of Olive Ridleys participate in Arribada along the shores of Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. One such place is ‘Velas beach’ and a couple of other villages where the beach stretches. The Olive Ridleys migrate across thousands of kilometers to lay eggs on these shores every year. About 20 – 60 nests are found every year onshore Velas beach.
Velas Turtle Festival is an event organized by two non-profit NGO called ‘Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra’ and ‘Kasav Mitra Mandal’. People, local and visitors, gather together along the shores when the eggs laid by the adult female Oliver Ridleys hatch. The above NGOs have joined hands with Forest Department and Marine Turtle Conservation centre of the state to preserve the eggs from becoming preys to birds, small animals, crabs, snakes, etc. After guarding them till a reporting of an egg hatching occurs, people gather at this beach to take the young turtles in their hands and leave it in the sea water. This extra-ordinary event is called as “Velas Turtle Festival”.
Velas is also known for the birth place of Nana Phadnavis, a great Indian diplomat.
Bankot Sea Fort :

Bankot stands at the mouth of Bankot creek, where Savitri river (originating from Mahabaleshwar) meets the Arabian Sea. Bankot creek was a major sea trade route, and the ancient caves of Dasgaon and Mandangad are the evidence of the same. Bankot fort is also known as Himmatgad & Victoria Fort.

Harihareshwar:

Surrounded by four holy hills Harihar, Harshinachal, Bramhadri and Pushpadri Harihareshwar is a region in Konkan which is amazingly beautiful with hills playing the perfect foil for long stretch of pristine beach. The Harihareshwar temple built in the 16th century with the deities of Vishnu Brahma and Shiva is the primary attraction in Harihareshwar along with beautiful stretch of beach.

Trek O Phy : Photography Tour to Bijapur-Badami- Aihole- Pattadakal on 11-13 April 2014

Dear Friends,

We at Trek O Phy, invite you for over a weekend Photography tour  to Bijapur – Badami – Aihole - Pattadakal to witness India’s finest examples of architectures on 11-13 April 2014.

About the Destinations :
Bijapur :  A fascinating open-air museum dating back to the Deccan’s Islamic era, dusty Bijapur tells a glorious tale dating back some 600 years. Blessed with a heap of mosques, mausoleums, palaces and fortifications, it was the capital of the Adil Shahi from 1489 to 1686, and one of the five splinter states formed after the Islamic Bahmani kingdom broken up in 1482.

Badami : Once the capital of the mighty Chalukya empire. Today Badami is famous for its magnificent rock-cut cave temples and red sandstone cliffs that resemble the Wild West. While the dusty main road is an eyesore that will have you wanting to get the hell out of there, its backstreets are a lovely area to explore with old houses, carved wooden doorways. An occasional Chalukyan ruin and flocks of curious kids.

Aihole : Some 100 temples, built between the 4th and 6th centuries AD, speck the ancient Chalukyan Regional Capital of Aihole (ay-ho-leh).
However, are either in ruins or engulfed by the modern village. Aihole documents the embryonic stage of South Indian Hindu architecture, from the earliest simple shrines, such as the most ancient Ladkhan Temple, to the later and more complex buildings, such as the Meguti Temple. The most impressive of them all is the 7th-century Durga Temple, notable for its semicircular apse (inspired by Buddhist architecture) and the remains of the curvilinear sikhara (temple spire). The interiors house intricate stone carvings. The small museum behind the temple contains further examples of Chalukyan sculpture.

Pattadakal : A secondary capital of the Badami Chalukyas. Pattadakal is known for its group of temples, which are collectively a World Heritage Site. Barring a few temples that date back to the 3rd century AD, most others in the group were built during the 7th and 8th centuries AD. Historians believe Pattadakal served as an important trial ground for the development of South Indian temple architecture.
Two main types of temple towers were tried out here. Curvilinear towers top the Kadasiddeshwra, Jambulinga and Galaganatha temples, while square roofs and receding tiers are used in the Mallikarjuna, Sangameshwara and Virupaksha temples.
The main Virupaksha Temple is a massive structure, its columns covered with intricate carvings depicting episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. A giant stone sculpture of Nandi sits to the temple’s east. The Mallikarjuna Temple, next to the Virupaksha Temple, is almost identical in design. About 500m south of the main enclosure is the Jain Papanatha Temple, its entrance flanked by elephant sculptures.
