We @ शिखर वेध has arranged our Favourite destination Trek to Sandhan Valley exploration cum rappelling event on 14-15 December 2013

Brief Intro abt Sandhan:-

Height:~ 4100 ft

Grade: Medium

Time: ~ 0.5 hrs from Samrad
Location: Bhandardara region

"SANDHAN" .... is a beautiful place situated in the Western Ghats near Ratangad. Amidst the water carved valley of 50 to 500 feet deep and around two km long. Experience the heart throbbing crossing of 4 ft deep water pool in the way of rock floored water carved valley.

This will be your memorable trek.

Also you will get chance to Rappel down four small patches to reach the base of SANDHAN VALLEY.

Brief Introduction about Rajgad / Torna:-

Height:  4182 ft / 4200 ft
Grade:  Medium/Medium 
Time: ~ Maximum 2 / 3 hrs from base villages Gunjavane / Velhe
Location: Pune

RAJGAD – The name describes the place itself. The King of all the forts. 
It is to the south-west 40 Kms from Pune. It boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji on any fort. He spent almost 25/30 yrs here. Rajgad is famous for its construction. The fort can be divided into four different parts based on geographical terrain and fortification. These are the three sub-plateaux (Machee) namely Padmavati Machee, Suvela Machee and Sanjevani Machee, and at the centre is the Ballekilla. 

Padmavati Machee (north end) : This machee is the site of Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake, Chor Darwaja, Pali Darwaja, Gunjavane Darwaja, Daru Kothar (storage of arms and ammunition), Diwankhana, Rajwada (ruins), Ghod Tale (Horse Lake), Sadar (office) and Dhalkathi (flag hoisting place).

Sanjeevani Machee (southwest/west end) : This huge, beautiful and royally constructed machee faces west and has a three-stepped (layered) fortified structure. Each of the lower levels is separated from the higher one by a fortified bastion with a gate that could be defended independently. The lowest level is beautifully fortified by double curtain walls (chilkhathi) separated by a deep trench, on average 12 feet across. One can walk between these walls. The outer wall has openings to let soldiers out for sudden attack.

Suvela Machee (south east) : This is another grand machee facing east with lots of secret routes and doorways. This one is a double-stepped fortified machee with the steps separated by a beautiful bastioned doorway. At the end of first step a hole cuts across the rock; one can sit in this hole (nedhe). The final (lowest) step like Sanjeevani Machee has a double curtain wall. To the south side of this machee one can see a beautiful triangular bastion called Kaleswari buruz having an escape door near it. The home of the renowned military leader Tanaji Malusare was in this machee.

Bale Killa (centre) : This is the highest part of the fort which has remains of palaces, water cisterns and caves. It has a beautiful entrance door called Mahadarwaja. One can view the whole fort and the vast surrounding expanse.

TORNA:- The fort is also known as Prachandagad (huge fort), due to its massive size. In 1646, when Shivaji was 16, he launched his first military attack by capturingTorna fort, paving the way for the great empire. Many battles have been fought on this fort.
The fort is truly grand and stretches for couple of kilometers.

Fascinating points on Torna fort:

Goddess Toranjai: it is a simple temple where goddesses Somjai and Toranjai are worshiped. Ahead we can see the lakes toran and mhasoba.

Maal and Safeli Bastions: On the west of Kothji Darwaja are the bastion maal, and the latter one is to the south of the former. Near Safeli is the construction called lakadkhaana, where wood was stored. Here is the way to Kokan Darwaja and Budhla Machi.

Budhla Machi: In Marathi ‘budhla’ means vessel, and budhla machi looks like a vessel kept upside down. This cliff is a breathtaking spot on the fort.

Bini Darwaja: This is the main entrance to the fort from velhe and is situated to the northwest of the fort. The bastion on the left side has collapsed. The path ahead leads to the Kothi Darwaja.

Kothi Darwaja: Ascending the steps carved in the rock, we enter the Kothi Darwaja facing east. Here we come across some guard rooms. Way along the wall towards east takes us to the temple of goddess Toranjai.

Hanuman Bastion: This bastion is situated to the east of Kothi Darwaja. Here we can see the idol of hanuman facing south and a flag post. The way ahead leads tothe bastion Bhel. Further eastwards we come to Zunjar Machi.

Temple of goddess Mengai: this is the only place on the fort where one can stay. It has two doors and the roof is stillin the needs of repairs. In front of the temple is a Deepmala.

Zunjar Machi: It is situated on the western side & a wonderful spot to see.

.Durga and Dhakoba are the two prominent peaks on the huge plateau spread between Jivdhan and Ahupe.

Durga Fort :
Durga is a small fort with no remnants just a hill with many stones lying atop. At the base of the fort there is a small temple of Ma Durga.

Dhakoba :
Being the highest point on the plateau Dhakoba offers commanding view of the surrounding. One can spot, Naneghat, Jivdhan, Durga, Ahupe, Gorakhgad from here.

Dukes nose is a huge pinnacle which can be seen while travelling between Mumbai and Pune. It’s shape is like a nose or a thumb. About Fort

Fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj in 1648 to secure central Konkan against the Sidis. This fort use as a penal settlement in which prisoners were confined in rock dungeons, one dungeon being able to hold fifty prisoners.

 Fort situated between Raigad & Torna a massive pinnacle it took name from its shape The fortified rock is about 2,969 feet high from ground level rock-cut steps have been completely destroyed, and the fort is almost inaccessible. Top is nearly 2500 sq. ft., there’s nothing remain except some ruins of a grain store and some cisterns.

Mumbai Travellers and Bike N Hike come together to bring you an opportunity to experience explore and photograph the avian wonders of LRK. The vast expanse of this cracked land often gleaming with mirages has more surprises to it than what meets the eye. This seemingly infinite landscape hosts a large assortment of bird species mainly Raptors. The sunrise and the sunset here are those fascinating moments when the golden light reflects upon the enduring wetlands, resulting in lighting up the entire horizon and mesmerizing anyone who experiences this spectacle.

Short Info: 

LRK has been a renowned destination for avid birders, naturalists and photographers alike. This tour is led by VipulRamanuj, a biodiversity expert with special interest in herpeto-fauna and wildlife photography. Having spent several years studying the habitat and the wildlife of LRK, Vipul will share his knowledge of this region (both field & scientific)with the participants.Our primary focus during this workshop is to observe & photograph different species of birds – residents, migrants as well as passage migrants. With Wild Asses kicking and running around loose, this wetland is a paradise for photographers. LRK is visited by a number of Raptors this season which include Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Steppe Eagle, Imperial Eagle and various species of Harriers. It’s a place full of surprises as you never know you may just spot a raptor on a kill or a bird that is extremely rare. It’ll also offer a chance to picture Hoopoe Lark, Short-eared Owl, Desert Warbler, Greater and Lesser Flamingoes, Common Crane, Long-legged Buzzard, Sandgrouse, Pelicans and Greater Short-toed Lark. During this workshop, the participants will get a chance to sight, photograph, observe and learn about various species of birds and get hands-on tips on bird photography from experts.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERT:

Mr.VIPUL RAMANUJ a well known wildlife photographer, primarily interested in reptiles. Vipul is also known for his unique wide angle clicks using snakes as his major subject, which is a unique concept very rare photographer prefers to do. Vipul runs his own company “Bike n Hike” following his passion for travelling and Photography.

CONTENT OF WORKSHOP:

This workshop is designed to give participants a huge takeaway in terms of learning and experiencing birding with experts in the field. Whether you’re a beginner in photography or an expert, have keen interest in wildlife or just passionate about birding, then this workshop is just for you. This is also a wonderful opportunity to work closely with fellow photographers and wildlife enthusiasts as well. Our activities will involve making the most of the photographic opportunities PLUS gaining scientific field knowledge. This workshop will encompass:

• Three days intense birding and photography at various locations within the Little Rann of Kutch.
• Observing different species of birds, mainly Raptors and other wetland birds as well as mammals including endemic Asiatic Wild Ass
• We will be discussing different bird identification methods and some quick tips for sharpening birding skills.
• Vital skills for bird photography like approach, techniques and what NOT to do when making images of birds will be discussed in the field itself.
• LRK is famous as the world’s last refuge of the Indian Wild Ass. We will be making the most of the opportunities to make great images of this gorgeous mammal.
• Get in-depth scientific knowledge on different species from the wildlife expert and learn from their experiences in the field.
• Learning nuances of photography in general with hands-on tips & techniques shared by experts.
• The mesmerizing landscape of LRK, offers innumerable opportunities to experiment with your creativity and indulge in HDRs, Time-lapses and Scape shots.
• Majority of our time will be spent in the field to make the most of this opportunity, even if it involves adding a few extra miles to our safari.

Schedule:

Overnight Journey Towards Ahmedabad

Day 1: Assemble at Ahmedabad airport / Railway station by 0730 hrs. We will travel by road to LRK and should reach our resort at around 1100 hrs. After room allocation and freshening up we will have a small orientation session about the terrain, species and how next days will be like.

The first safari of the tour will take you to the mesmerizing landscapes of LRK to observe and photograph bird frenzy. As the golden evening light starts to set in we will try to make images of Wild Asses against the light capturing vibrant silhouettes PLUS this is also time for some raptors esp. Harriers to roost which gives an ideal opportunity to make ground level images or to just enjoy the red sun setting at the horizon.

Day 2: The day begins early as we prepare ourselves to head to second safari before the early morning light hits the Rann. We will be scouring vast expanses of Rann to spot and photograph raptors. Early morning is an ideal time to find a raptor on a kill if luck supports. Post safari, back at base we will discuss the outcome, learning and challenges of previous two safaris.

Evening safari will pretty much be like that of previous safari but with the major change in habitat. We will be going well off 40 kms inside LRK which is all together a different habitat. Chances of Macqueen’s Bustard, Indian Courser, and Desert Foxes are high here.

Day 3: Same as previous day’s morning safari and try to make the most of this last safari of the trip. Post lunch check out and head back to Ahmedabad with amazing memories, experience, stories and images to share on websites, blogs for the times to come.

It was in the year 1818 that British forces led by Mc Dowell wrested the fort and gained upper hand in the region as the forces won a set of 16 other forts in the vicinity.

Trimbakeshwar Temple is perched on the picturesque lusting green Brahmagiri hills near Nasik in Maharashtra. River Godavari originates on this hill and flows though the Brahmagiri ranges.

Breakfast at the Brahmagiri Top

Start Trek to Bhandar Durg  by 7.30 am
Reach the Top by 9am
Explore and Start Descending by 10.30 pm

Reach Base Village by 1.30 pm

Start our Return Journey by 4pm
Evening Tea/Coffee on the way

Dear Adventurous People,
Outdoor Adventure Management is back in action with Introductory Rock climbing session for Newcomers and practice session for all OAM RC students at SGNP.
It’s time to challenge your strength, flexibility and adventurous soul in you.

"Rock climbing" is the sport of climbing rock faces, especially with the safety of ropes and special equipment.
For physical fitness, fun and, yes, adrenaline, nothing beats rock climbing. But Knowledge of proper climbing techniques and usage of specialized climbing equipment is crucial for the safety.

Time - Reach SGNP gate by 8.00 call any of the core team member. Start Time - 8.0 am End Time -1.0 pm
Difficulty Level - Basic (Easy)

About the Place : 

Naneghat :  

This is human made commercial path to connect production rich places Junnar, Paithan, Sangamner, Ahmednagar, Khadki(Aurangabad now)with Kalyan, Danda Rajapuri(Thane now) and Shurparak(Virar-Nalasopara now)the places of export. This place had established 2600 years back during less known Saatwahan royal family ruling over Maharashtra and Karnataka. There is stone inscription seen on inside walls of giant cave with Brahmi language. some statues were there now we found only steps of them. Outside this cave some small caves are found, in a small cave at the top there is Lord Ganesh sculpture. There is many water tanks near main cave, at Ganesh cave and far below at the turns of stone laden steps goes down. Opposite to the Ganesh cave we see the old stone carved giant pot, which believed to store coins received as octroi and toll charges for use of Naneghat pass to transport good.

Jivdhan Fort :

The whole range of these forts originated during the rule of Satvaahan era. This is clear from the entrances carved out in stone. The fort stands at an important position and most important guard of Naneghat. From here any help to Naneghat could reach in less time. It was under Bahmani control and after that it went to Nizamshah. In 1636, Nizamshahi declined. Shahajiraje rescued Murtiza, the last Nizam from Jivdhan and took with him to the fort of Pemgiri. But he was trapped by Mughals and had to hand him over to them. This was the end of Nizamshahi. In 1818, the British captured all the forts here and destroyed them. Jivdhan too became a victim and the main entrance was destroyed. Even today the marks of those wounds cannot go unnoticed as we climb the fort.

Friends, you all are requested to carry packed lunch for the trek as there are no villagers and proper hutments for arranging food, water etc. Also there's nothing available on top except a mind blowing scenery, beautiful construction of rock-cut steps, thrill of climb & Loads of water. So do carry decent amount of eatables, and personal medicines as required.

Stargazing Camping at Sandhan Valley

Short Info: Sandhan valley is one of the greatest canyons in the Sahyadri mountain ranges. It is a very good combination of a canyon and a valley. Located in the Nagar district, near the famous fort Ratangad, Sandhan valley is undoubtedly The Valley of Suspense. Walking through the narrow streak of valley with 300 ft rock walls on both the sides is a lifetime experience. This time we are going to explore the darkest skies of Samrad with astronomy expert and telescope…

Friday Night journey:     Leave from Mumbai around 11.30 pm (meeting Points at Dadar & Thane)

Day-1: Reaching Samrad By 5:00 am. Rest till dusk. Get up by 7:00am. Breakfast. By 9:00 am Proceed to Explore Sandhan valley. Experience the thrill in wet Sandhan Valley in monsoon. Back to Tents/ School at Camping Place. Lunch.Post lunch Rest. By 4:00 pm proceed towards Kokankada for visiting waterfall. Start cooking food by 6:30 pm. Self Cooking Dinner. Overnight session begins here with our astronomy expert Vikram Virulkar from "Beyond Earth". This session will last till the night sets and sun rises. Stay will be in Tents.

Day-2: : After breakfast proceed towards Amruteshwar Temple and Bhandardara. Lunch at Bhandardara. Proceed towards Mumbai in our private vehicle

Short Info: Gir, the Jewel of Saurashtra (Gujrath, India), is spread over 1412 sq.kms. A dry deciduous forest. Gir is best known as the last home of Asiatic Lions. Over 411 Lions (as per the census of 2010), more than 311 Leopards, and a number of other carnivores, ungulates crossing the 50,000 mark and 300 species of birds. It also has 500 types of trees, more than 2000 species of insects and other lesser known animals with green patches of forest and dry scrub jungle. That’s Gir National Park and Sanctuary a pure paradise of biological diversity.
