The creator of this fort is unknown. In 1485 this place came under rule Nijamshahi dynasty. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nijamshahi, Mughals of Delhi tried to end Nijamshahi. In 1635-36, Shahaji Raje transferred himself with Jijabai and Shivaji Maharaj to Mahuli. When Khan Jaman attacked the fort, Shahaji asked Portuguese for help, who refused and Shahaji surrendered.

Some details about Matheran and Ladder route:
Matheran is situated in the Matheran range of sahyadris at a height of 2516 feet. With more than eight to ten different routes, Matheran (2516 feet) is the ultimate destination for the trekker, naturalist and outdoor enthusiast. It is literally a forest on top of the hill (mathe means head and raan means forest). The dense forest cover, teeming bird life, long walks and flora and fauna make this an all-time favorite. The best part is that it’s pollution-free as no vehicles are allowed in the hill station.

While trekking up to Matheran hills from chowk, it’s a long flat walk and then steep ascend which in turn also have some risky rock patches. There are three ladders fixed on those patches. First ladder is made of iron while other two ladders are of wood and bamboo, thus making it very risky affair especially in Monsoon.

According to local legend, Shivaji rode up this route on horseback. Locals also call this route as Shivaji Ladder route.

Trek the Lost route to Ratangad "Konkan Darwaja"

Ratangad, a jewel fort of Sahyadris has conventionally said to have 2 routes. One, from Ratanwadi village via Ganesh Darwaja and the other from Samrad village via Trimbak Darwaja. But hardly anyone knows there was a 3rd route from Konkan side to Ratangad i.e. Ratangad via Konkan Dawaja. This is also called as Kalyan Darwaja. The Konkan Darwaja route got closed because of rockslide that happened many years ago. Currently, there is a 180 ft rock patch just below the Konkan Darwaja. The route remained untouched till a few years ago till the Sahyadri explorer "Arun Sawant Sir" explored this route.

In our continuous endeavor to offer new adventure we are planning to trek down this newly opened route.

Hi Mates, We at Trek Mates India are glad to invite you for Flower Special Trek  to Ratangad on 28th September '13(Starting on 27th Friday Night). Photographers heaven in September.

Some information about the place:
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Endurance Level: Medium
Height: approx. 4255 ft.
Base Village: Ratanwadi

Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed jewel in all the hill forts here in Sahyadri. It is located in the district of Ahmednagar and is located about 4255 feet above sea level. It lies in the Ajoba mountain range surrounded by great mountains of Kulang, Alang, Kalsubai, Katarabai, Ajoba and Ghanchakkar. Geographically Ratangad is at the banks of Bhandardara lake of Ahmednagar district. With views of lake and highest mountains in Sahyadris looks very much lost in time.
This fort offers offers fabulous views of majestic Sahyadri ranges. Right from Katrabai till Sandhan Valley. One of the most beautiful forts in Flowering September, Ratangad seems to shadowed by yellow Sonki Flowers.

At the base of this fort is ancient Lord Shiva (Amurteshwar) temple. About 1000 years old temple of Lord Shiva, the Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi, is an absolute paragon of high class architecture of our ancestors.
Ratangad has still the remains of fort with bastions and stone walls. Cave on the top is cut from the rock face and can easily accomodate 25 people at a time. Water cisterns are usually filled with water throughout the year and trekkers use them as water source. Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left, one can see Rani mahal here. From the southern side on can see Katrabai and Ajoba fort very close. This side has also some fortification left, but most of it is damaged. Climbing up on the northern side, one can see natural orifice (hole in rock, locally called nedhe) in the rock face, mostly made by wind. This orifice is big enough to be seen from base of the fort and can accommodate about 6-7 people at a time. Strong winds can be experienced at this orifice. Climbing down the Nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle via Triambak Darwaza.

VRangers trek to Jewel of sahyadri Ratangad on 28th Ngt- 29th Sep 2013.

“Ratan” means jewel. Ratangad is known as the jewel fort. It is situated in dense forests of Kalsubai – Harishchandragad range and offers a very beautiful view from the top.

Region: Igatpuri
Base Village: Ratanwadi.
Difficulty: Medium
Cost: Rs. 750/- {It includes Morning Breakfast, Travelling from Dadar to dadar by private Non Ac Bus , Guide & VR expertise charges}.
History:-
The fort is origin for the river Pravara / Amrutvahini . The Bhandardara dam is built on this river. Ratangad has a natural rock peak with a cavity in it at the top which is called 'Nedhe' or 'Eye of the Needle'; formed by natural erosion, it is big enough to accommodate a group  Of ten people and the view of the entire region from here is absolutely amazing. Ratangad was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle and was one of his favourites. The base village Ratanwadi has a beautiful Amruteshwar temple which is famous for its carvings.
Bhandardara Dam                     Amruteshwar Temple                           Ratangad Nedhe
The entry to the fort is through two ladders & the ladders are in poor shape. One of them has the railing of a complete side hanging, while the other has no railings for the last 5 rungs. Besides they are supported by apparently flimsy supports. And another entrance of the fort is called Tryambak darwaza, this is Main Entrance. The steep way down from the Tryambak darwaza are little risky. A chor darwaza ("Secret entrance") the fort lies below the walls. A water tank on top of the mountain. Ratangad had one of the largest rain water catchment areas for its day.

Space Apple Paragliding Workshop

$

0
One day paragliding workshop
Most suitable for a small group of friends who are interested in adventure sports and want to explore paragliding. Individuals can register to get notified to join an open group. Small group size and our location help us reduce the risk factors
Statistics also shows that less than 10 percent of the people who undergo P1 training do not continue with the sport. So about 90 percent people spend time and money doing P1 course to realize they do not want to continue paragliding.  Our customized workshop of half a day or a full day orientation course is an ideal solution to address this issue. If you immediately sign up for a P1 course this amount is adjusted against the P1 course fees.
What do you achieve in such short period?
You get to understand and experience the thrill of paragliding by spending less time, less money. If you are good with your motor skills you will manage a few tethered flights at a low height. This session is conducted on a beach. The soft sand at touchdown and absence of any obstacle reduces risk factors and hardship as against the rough terrain at the base of a hill. The calm evening sea breeze and overall ambience is a perfect setting for you to taste your first flight. Your sense of achievement and the experience of free flight captured against the backdrop of setting sun captured by a candid camera are just priceless.  . Apart from paragliding you also get to spend some time with power kites. The exposure to these sports, interaction with qualified instructors, the photographs for your face book page make this a value for money package.
What is the difference between half a day and a full day session?
Obvious is the time duration of the workshop and so will be the cost. Other than that during the full day we have a theory, video and a simulator session.  In full day in case you are unable to have a tethered hop we give you a tandem joyride so flying is guaranteed. Your age, weight and physical health is criteria taken into consideration before enrollment. There is no time for a theory session in a half day session, you see a demo and straight away get strapped on to a harness for a hands on experience. In both sessions you also get to spend some time with power kites.
To make this cost effective and enjoyable for participants we take minimum batch of two persons and maximum four persons.

How to reach by train

Alight at Virar station, which is on the western railway local train route. Exit from platform no.1 on the west side. There are buses as well as auto rickshaw to reach Space Apple office. The distance from station is about 6 Km.

How to reach by road

Space Apple Air And Adventure Camp

$

About organisers: Space Apple was started in 2002 Samson D’silva, an adventure enthusiast who after working for about 10 years in corporate world, choose his passion as a career. Though the main aim was to promote paragliding it grew up with many more activities and cater to larger clientele.  Children camps organised by Space Apple were quite popular in the initial years. From 2013 Space Apple has decided to organise three camps every year with a focus on introducing aviation adventure sports to the young generation. These camps will be unique due to Space Apple’s background and personal involvement of Samson D’silva. The core team consists of family members who are equally enthusiastic about adventure sports as well as few support staff – all of them are paragliding pilots.
Basic information:   The group size will be between 5 to 10 participants and age group will be 10 to 15 years.  The camp duration will be three nights and four days.  Accommodation and food will be provided at Space Apple club house.  Accommodation choices include shared rooms, dormitory or tents as per preference. Breakfast and meals will be mostly home cooked with choice of vegetarian as well as non vegetarian. Menu will be decided by participants.
OUR USP:  Eight unusual activities apart from the standard camp stuff.

Aviation workshop:  3 to 4 hours duration.
Making two to three different models aircrafts from locally available material. Fundamentals, basic concept of flying, control surfaces etc are explained in this workshop. Participants are given raw material and tools to make the models. They are taught how to fly them. At the end they get a few readymade models and material to make these models at home. They get enough knowledge and experience to teach this to others if they have the desire and inclination.
Paragliding feel and control:   Weight limits 25 to 75 kgs.  Experienced instructors explain the control of paragliders followed by tethered flights up to 20 to 30 feet. Each participant will actually be flying in the air controlling the paragliders and landing. This will be an experience to remember for a lifetime.
Winch based paragliding tandem ride:  Weight limit maximum 75kgs.This is a tandem joyride with a help of a winch. An experienced tandem pilot takes you as a passenger to a height of about 1,000 feet. Moments Shoot's Photo Walk 2 - Vasai/Bassein Fort 6th Oct 2013

Vasai Fort, also called Bassein Fort, lies about 48 kms north of Mumbai just across the Ulhas River.  The fort in the old city was the headquarter of the Portuguese in the north, next in importance to Goa.  The coastal land-fort of Vasai was surrounded by sea on three sides and to the landside it had a moat which was filled by sea-water.  Its 4.5kms long strong stone wall had 11 bastions.  The fort had two gates – the westward land-gate.  There was also a small citadel in the fort.  Well – equipped with water-tanks, store-houses, armoury, etc., the fort also had fields for growing grains and vegetables.  All the old structures inside the wall are now in ruins.

Vasai came into prominence when the ancient harbour of Sopara (now Nalsopara village, 10kms north of Vasai) became unfit for use.  However, Vasai continued to be a trading centre.  A small fort-like structure was erected here in 1533 AD by Malik Tughan, the commander of Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat.  In 1534 AD, the Portuguese forced Bahadur Shah to cede Vasai in perpetuity.  Here, first they constructed the citadel (Balekilla), and then in 1590AD, the present fort with its ramparts and other structures came into being.  For the next about 150 years Vasai enjoyed opulence and prosperity.  The Portuguese built here magnificent houses, convents, churches and an orphanage.  Only the Hidalgos (Portuguese nobles) were allowed to reside within the fort walls.

Vasai was the main naval base and sort of ship-building centre of the Portuguese.  The end came in 1739AD, when Chimaji Appa, Peshwa Bajirav’s brother, stormed the fort and captured it with great loss of life.  It was here in 1802 AD, the Peshwa Bajirav II signed the infamous “Treaty of Bassein” which virtually dissolved the Maratha Confederacy.  Finally, the fort and the city of Vasai was ceded to the British in 1817 AD.
