Amboli is a hill station in south Maharashtra, India. At an altitude of 690 m it is the last hill station before the
coastal highlands of Goa and a relatively unexplored one.
Amboli lies in the Sahayadri Hills of Western India, one of the world's "Eco Hot-Spots" and it therefore abounds in a variety of fairly unique flora and fauna.

The misty forests of Amboli are a Home for many species of Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, Animals, Plants.

The walking trails to Shirgaonkar Point, Mahadevgarh, through the fog give us immense opportunities to explore, enjoy the Flora Fauna of Amboli.

Bamboo Pit Viper (Trimeresurus gramineus)
Wildlife of Amboli includes many species of Reptiles like Malabar Pit vipers, Vine Snakes, Green Keelback, Shield Tails etc.
Also in Amphibians one can easily sight Malabar Gliding Frog, Amboli Frog, Koyna Toads etc.

The hills of Amboli village provide one of the sources of the Krishna River (The Ganges of south India) and an ancient Shiva temple (called Hiranyakeshi) exists at the cave where the water emerges. The main attraction for tourists is the incredibly high rainfall (7 m average per year!)and the numerous waterfalls and mist during the monsoons.

स्पंदनभ्रमंती 1 day trek to Sondai Fort, Nr. Karjat on 14th July 2013, Sunday.

Introduction, Geography & History of Fort:

Type: Hill Fort
Height: Approx. 2100 ft above Mean Sea Level
Grade: Easy
Base Village: Sonde Wadi,
Region: Karjat.

Sondai is less known or not popular fort, stands approx 9 kms of Karjat overlooking the Karjat-Chauk highway and offers a beautiful view of Morbe Dam, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Rajmachi, Songiri forts and Matheran mountain range.
History:
This fort was used as watch tower. There are 2 water cisterns on machi (at the base of the pinnacle) and steps are carved out of rocks to go on the topmost point where an idol of Sondai Devi stands. Two more water cisterns are on the way and has potable water. Two missing steps in the rock makes one to climb a small patch of 15 feet but proper hand holds and footsteps are available and that makes it easy even in monsoon.
Wavarle is another village from where a bit difficult approach to the fort passes through the dense forest. Overall it's an ideal one day hike for new comers in the trekking field.

It is situated amidst thick forest at the base with enough potable water from the lake on the top. The rock carved steps makes an easy climb to the fort. On a clear day one can view Sahara’s Amby valley developed at the base of Koraigad. Tung fort is a pleasent sight to watch from the top.

Two nice
lakes on the arid, flat top really takes one by surprise. Ganesh temple and a cave are situated half way and a temple of Koraidevi is situated on the top.

The interesting part of the fort is that its wall is completely intact and one can walk along its entire perimeter (about 2 km). Its massive gate is also intact. Several ruins of older structures within the fort still exist. It has six cannons - the largest of which called the Laxmi Toph is located near the Korai devi temple

TMI : One Day Monsoon Trek to Asherigad on 28th July 2013

Dear Mates, We at Trek Mates India invite you all for a One Day Trek to Asherigad on 28th July 2013

Information about the place:
Fort: Asherigad.
Height: 2000 feet
Range: Palghar.
District: Thane
Level: Easy- Medium
Trek Leader: Vikram Singh - 9987761562

History mentions that Bhojraj, a descendant of the Shilahar Dynasty built this fort. Hence it can be assumed that this fort is at least 800 years old. The Portuguese rebuilt this fort after they captured it during their rule. In 1737, Peshwa won this fort during his campaign of the Konkan and in 1818 this fort came under the British rule.

Fascinating Spots :On the plains and on the right of the path one can see quite many remnants of settlements. One can also see quite many foundations with gutters cut in them. These could be to collect the rainwater during the rainy season or to lead away the overflow. The cave on the top is of medium size and having a large cave opening. But it has been carved into the rocks in such a way that the stray wind or the cold does not enter in. The back portion of the cave is very uneven. However, there are platforms made both outside and inside for the guards to take rest. The two hibiscus bushes outside the cave entrance point to the fact that rituals might have been conducted regularly by the villagers somewhere in the past. On left side of the top portion of the cave, there is a built in square water tank. There is a half buried cannon in this tank. There are two more half completed tanks here. From the top plateau, one can see the fort of Kohoj to the South West. One can also see the natural human form on the fort with the help of binoculars. Going ahead on the path one can see a huge depression the rock face and a bastion.
The itinerary for the Trek is as given below:

Hello Friends, We at Trek Mates India are glad to invite you for a Monsoon Trek to Ratangad on 15th August, Thursday 2013.

Some information about the place:
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Endurance Level: Medium
Height: apprx. 4255 ft.
Base Village: Ratanwadi

Trek Leader : Manoj Kalwar

(Pics has been sourced from the internet)

Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed jewel in all the hill forts here in Sahyadri. It is located in the district of Ahmednagar and is located about 4255 feet above sea level. It lies in the Ajoba mountain range surrounded by great mountains of Kulang, Alang, Kalsubai, Katarabai, Ajoba and Ghanchakkar. Geographically Ratangad is at the banks of Bhandardara lake of Ahmednagar district. With views of lake and highest mountains in Sahyadris looks very much lost in time.

(Pics has been sourced from the internet)

At the base of this fort is ancient Lord Shiva (Amurteshwar) temple. About 1000 years old temple of Lord Shiva, the Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi, is an absolute paragon of high class architecture of our ancestors.

Ratangad has still the remains of fort with bastions and stone walls. Cave on the top is cut from the rock face and can easily accomodate 25 people at a time. Water cisterns are usually filled with water throughout the year and trekkers use them as water source. Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left, one can see Rani mahal here. From the southern side on can see Katrabai and Ajoba fort very close. This side has also some fortification left, but most of it is damaged. Climbing up on the northern side, one can see natural orifice (hole in rock, locally called nedhe) in the rock face, mostly made by wind. This orifice is big enough to be seen from base of the fort and can accommodate about 6-7 people at a time. Strong winds can be experienced at this orifice. Climbing down the nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle via tryambak Darwaza.

We at Trek Mates India have arranged a One day Monsoon Trek to Sondai Fort on Saturday, 20th July 2013

Little Info About The Fort

Sondai Fort:
Sondai is not popular or unknown fort, stands approx 6kms of Karjat overlooking the Karjat-Chauk highway and offers a beautiful view of Morbe Dam, Prabalgad, Irshal, Rajmachi, Songiri forts and Matheran mountain range. This was used as watch tower. The base village of Sondewadi stands on a considerable height. There are 2 water cisterns on machi (at the base of the pinnacle) and steps are carved out of rocks to go on the topmost point where an idol of Sondai Devi stands. Two more water cisterns are on the way and has potable water. Two missing steps in the rock makes one to climb a small patch of 15 feet but proper hand holds and foot steps are available and that makes it easy even in monsoon. Wavarle is another village from where a bit difficult approach to the fort passes through the dense forest. Overall it's an ideal one day hike for new comers in the trekking field.
