TMI : Monsoon Trek to Ratangad on 15th August Thursday 2013.

Hello Friends, We at Trek Mates India are glad to invite you for a Monsoon Trek to Ratangad on 15th August, Thursday 2013.

Some information about the place:
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Endurance Level: Medium
Height: apprx. 4255 ft.
Base Village: Ratanwadi

Trek Leader : Manoj Kalwar

(Pics has been sourced from the internet)

Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed jewel in all the hill forts here in Sahyadri. It is located in the district of Ahmednagar and is located about 4255 feet above sea level. It lies in the Ajoba mountain range surrounded by great mountains of Kulang, Alang, Kalsubai, Katarabai, Ajoba and Ghanchakkar. Geographically Ratangad is at the banks of Bhandardara lake of Ahmednagar district. With views of lake and highest mountains in Sahyadris looks very much lost in time.

(Pics has been sourced from the internet)

At the base of this fort is ancient Lord Shiva (Amurteshwar) temple. About 1000 years old temple of Lord Shiva, the Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi, is an absolute paragon of high class architecture of our ancestors.

Ratangad has still the remains of fort with bastions and stone walls. Cave on the top is cut from the rock face and can easily accomodate 25 people at a time. Water cisterns are usually filled with water throughout the year and trekkers use them as water source. Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left, one can see Rani mahal here. From the southern side on can see Katrabai and Ajoba fort very close. This side has also some fortification left, but most of it is damaged. Climbing up on the northern side, one can see natural orifice (hole in rock, locally called nedhe) in the rock face, mostly made by wind. This orifice is big enough to be seen from base of the fort and can accommodate about 6-7 people at a time. Strong winds can be experienced at this orifice. Climbing down the nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle via tryambak Darwaza.

The itinerary for the trek will be as follows:

Breakfree Journeys goes trekking to Fort Visapur - 7th July!

$
0
0

Visapur holds memories of our first glimpse of the monsoons last year. This year, we hope to embrace the clouds once again as we head to this expansive fort located in the Maval region of Lonavala. Standing at an imposing height of over 3500 feet, this fort offers a relaxed hike passing through Bhaje caves built in the 200 BC!

The hike is easy and skirts around the edge of the mountain offering fantastic views of the valley and the expressway and the other peaks of the region. Known to be the big brother to Lohagad, Visapur stands tall with most of its fortification along the edges intact.

If the weather is supportive, we might encounter majestic waterfalls en route too, where we promise to pause for a refreshing break!

Here's the plan!

The Breakfree Bus will leave from Borivali(McDonald's) at 500 AM and proceed on the Western Express Highway passing through Goregaon-Andheri-Bandra(Kalanagar)-Sion and then upto Vashi - Panvel and then the Expressway!

We will be very happy to pick you up from any point on the given route.

Cost: Rs. 900 inclusive of Breakfast, Lunch, Transport and a whole lotta fun!

A maximum of 25 participants will be allowed on the trek.

We normally do not accept advance payments and rely on your oral/written confirmation to block seats. Therefore it is advisable that you consult your prior commitments before confirming a seat rather than cancelling/backing out at the last moment much to inconvenience of everybody.

Kindly call us on 9820023362 to confirm.

Kindly note:

1. We recommend Action Trekking Shoes; running/gym shoes normally give away to the tough terrain and become useless.

2. Carry at least 2 litres of water with you along with some dry snacks, fruits and a pair of change.

3. Consumption of Alcohol, Narcotic substances and cigarettes is prohibited and may lead to possible expulsion from the trek, and an early expulsion from Natural Habitat.

4. Windcheaters are recommended.

RSVP on the Facebook Event.

This is dome shaped peak near Tungareshwar. The fort does not have any fortification as such but signs of this site are present in the surroundings. There is one small water tank dug out in the rock are present on the western side of the summit. The summit provides beautiful views of Vasai creek and its surrounding areas such as Bhaindar and Vasai cities. Islands covered with mangroves and salt pans near the creek can also be seen from the summit. Tungareshwar hills also add to the beautiful scenery around the fort. Kothaligad is more commonly known as the fort of Peth. The fort is known as Kothaligad, because the way to the highest point of the fort has been carved by digging tunnel like spiral stairs through a single rock (In Marathi Kothala means contents in abdominal cavity, the stairs are cut through the rock as if digging abdomen of the rock ).  Peth or kothaligad is a small hiking destination near Karjat.
On reaching the top of the fort, we see caves carved in huge rocks. The first one is the cave of Goddess, besides which is awater cistern and the last one is the auspicious Bhairoba cave. A flat floor and well-sculpted pillars are specialty of the cave. Along the Bhairoba cave, steps are carved leading the pinnacle. From top one can locate Bhimashankar, Siddhagad, Malanggad, Nakhind, Chanderi, Prabalgad, Manikgad, and Matheran.

Trek: Bhimashankar
Height: Appx 3500 ft
Region: Karjat
Grade: Medium

Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirlings of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle. The Maharashtra Government has also declared it a Sanctuary. The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km’s), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Junglefowls, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufa indica elphistoni), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.

Shiva Temple : The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the Hemad Panthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high “Deepmala” or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.
Gupt Bhimashankar : There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the “water sculpted” “Shiva Linga” under this waterfall. This is called the Gupt Bhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.

Nagphani : We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The route going up through this route leads to the Nagphani. We can have a view of the forts of Peth and Padhar and the plateaus of Peth and Matheran.
