Brief Introduction of places:
Nasik is an ancient city of India. References are found showing its importance in all the four Yugas. It was known as Padmanagar in Kruta Yuga, Janasthana in Dwapar Yuga and Nasik in Kali-Yuga. It has many associations with the Hindu epic Ramayana. Lord Ram his wife Sita and Laxman was said to have cut off the nose (Nasika) of Ravana’s sister Shurpanakha here, thus giving the city name “Nasik”.
Shree Saptshrungi Gad near Nasik city is situated at a distance of 68 km from Nasik. It is one of the most visited and religious places for pilgrims. As the temple is situated on a mountain. Shree Saptshrungi Gad is one among the 51 shaktippethas temple in India and one of the four shaktippetha temple in Maharashtra, other being, Mahalakshmi temple Kolhapur,Tuljapur Bhavani Temple, Mahur Gad Devi temple in Mahur.
Saptashringa Ghad is a place where Goddess Bhagawati dwells. It is one of the most important of the places of Goddesses in Maharashtra. Saptashringa signifies seven mountain peaks. Nanduri village is situated at the foot of the Saptashringa Gad. In front of the temple there stands Markandeya Rishi's (sage) hill. The Saptashringa Gad is full of a variety of trees having medicinal worth. As per the story depicted in Ramayana, Hanuman carried the herbal medicine for wounded Laxmana from this hill. There are about 108 water reservoirs on the hill, known as Kundas.”It is said that there is one flag which is said to be at top of the mountain where Saptashrungi mata's temple is situated. This road is only known by one person that is A poojari and no one else. Before his death he gives information of this hidden road to another poojari and this goes on. But only one poojari knows the way”.
Vani is situated at a distance of 60 kms away from Nasik. Hindu almanac considers three and half days as highly auspicious. They are Gudipadwa - Hindu's New Year, Dushhera, Diwali and Akshaytritiya. Likewisedwelling places of Goddesses in Maharashtra are famous.
Ramshej:
On the western tip of the beautiful Ramshej Ghat in Northern Nasik, lies the marvelous Ramshej fort. Ramshej is about 14km from Nasik, while travelling to Peth and from there it is a short trek to the fort. The fort is located at a height of 3273ft, which shows you the marvel of labor and effort that went into making it.
History has it, that the fort was attacked by Aurangzeb’s army, and his commanders threatened the Maratha kingdom saying that they would capture the fort in hours but Shivaji Maharaj’s son Sambhaji resisted these attacks for 7 years. The Fort thus remained with the Marathas for a period that was longer than the fighting lives of some of the commanders of Aurangazeb’s army who made the claim that the fort would be taken down in hours.
Some of the other attractions that this place has to offer are the fortifications that still remain, the handwork of the Ramlalla temple, the secret tunnel that takes you into the fort, caves that are hewn out of rock and a breathtaking view of the Trimbak range, Satmala range & Borgad.

TMI: One Day Trek to Asherigad on 16th December '12.

Dear Mates,

We, at Trek Mates India invite you all for a one day trek to Asherigad on 16th December 2012

Fort: Asheri Gad.
Height: 2000 feet
Range: Palghar.
District: Thane
Level: Easy- Medium
Trek Leader: Vishal Khond

History mentions that Bhojraj, a descendant of the Shilahar Dynasty built this fort. Hence it can be assumed that this fort is at least 800 years old. The Portuguese rebuilt this fort after they captured it during their rule. In 1737, Peshwa won this fort during his campaign of the Konkan and in 1818 this fort came under the British rule.

Fascinating Spots :On the plains and on the right of the path one can see quite many remnants of settlements. One can also see quite many foundations with gutters cut in them. These could be to collect the rainwater during the rainy season or to lead away the overflow. The cave on the top is of medium size and having a large cave opening. But it has been carved into the rocks in such a way that the stray wind or the cold does not enter in. The back portion of the cave is very uneven. However, there are platforms made both outside and inside for the guards to take rest. The two hibiscus bushes outside the cave entrance point to the fact that rituals might have been conducted regularly by the villagers somewhere in the past. On left side of the top portion of the cave, there is a built in square water tank. There is a half buried cannon in this tank. There are two more half completed tanks here. From the top plateau, one can see the fort of Kohoj to the South West. One can also see the natural human form on the fort with the help of binoculars. Going ahead on the path one can see a huge depression the rock face and a bastion.

A thin irregular line scratched on a bare, brown hillside: a path between two distant villages. Two men in long gowns, driving two laden donkeys: the only traffic. Dwarfed miniaturised by the immensity of the mountains, wild tangles of them, Rugged shorn of trees, craggy slopes hued in so many tonnes, from dark brown of sand to purplish grey.

This is how the routes from Manali to Leh can be seen. The heaven on earth for bikers, off-roaders and photographers. This is what many of our mates missed last year... so we at Trek Mates India give you one more chance to experience the thrill again.. this year... in July.
