Fort Gorakhgad is quite small in size. It was had strategic importance during the reign of Shahaji Raje. However, no major battle is recorded to have taken place here. It was used in Shivaji’s era to patrol the nearby region and was used as a stopover station during the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Clean up event at Yeoor hills(Thane side) Sunday January 11, 2015

Hello Explorers, We are all familiar with our very own Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This park sits right inside our city nestled between Mumbai and Thane. A lot of us Mumbaikars have grown up playing in its jungles and shady forests and picnic spots. It would be rare to find a Mumbaikar who has not visited this National Park multiple times, and who doesn't have fond memories of this place. And most of all, its a genuine item of pride for us Mumbaikars. The way it makes us feel one with nature. But now, a new generation of people have come into the city who don't have the same respect.

These people have scant regard for the park, its surroundings or the great role it plays in getting rid of the pollution in our city. They do not realize that without the National Park, our city would be enveloped in smog.

There would be a lot more diseases rampant, and life would be extremely difficult here. In their lack of knowledge, they are causing distress to the Park itself. They go into this genuine green lung of our city - and leave behind trash and filth.

Everywhere on the shady hills, now are mountains of garbage. Where it was purely greenery as far as the eye can see, its plastic bottles and paper plates.

Where a lot of us romanced our sweethearts, is now full of filth left behind by a careless group of partygoers. Hence, we have decided to do something about it.

We are organizing a clean up event at Yeoor hills(Thane side) of the National Park this Sunday January 11, 2015. We will meet at the entrance of the park at 7.30am on Sunday and we expect to be done before noon. There will be different teams created and each team will be assigned a particular spot and be given the equipment for clean up including bags and gloves.

Collected trash will be taken and dumped at the nearest dumping ground. Every nature lover is welcome to join hands with us in the clean up effort.

We will make the National Park clean again; and fit for us to feel proud about it. So, please come and join us - and lets pick up our Pride! If you need more details, please call Amol Patwardhan at 9820962452. Thank you very much for doing this...

    About:
It is said that Kalsubai name is taken from a Koli girl named Kalsu.' Kalsu, according to the story, was fond of wandering in the forest. One day she came to Indor at the foot of the hill now called Kalsubai, and took service with a Koli family on condition that she should not be asked to clean pots or to sweep. Matters went smoothly till, one day, one of the families ordered Kalsu to clean some pots and clear away some Utter. She did as she was bid, bat, immediately after, climbed the hill and stayed on its top till her death. Where she cleaned the pots is known as Thale Mel, and where she cleared away the litter as Kaldara. The hill is a natural stronghold about ten miles south-east of Igatpuri, the nearest railway station. Its top is a cone with room only for a small shrine and a trigonometrically survey cairn. There is a large lower shoulder without remains of buildings, and the absence of water cisterns shows that the hill was never used as a fort.

Prabalgad Fort is located between Matheran and Panvel at an elevation of 2,300 feet. It was built at the pinnacle of the rocky plateau very close to Matheran. Previously, the fort was known as Muranajan and renamed by the Maratha forces under the rule of chatrapati Shivaji.
There is a dense forest on the way till the top of fort Prabal. This fort can be approached via steep climb of a waterfall route (water flows only during monsoon).
History: There is not much mention of this fort in history. However in 1658, Shivaji conquered Prabalgad from the Mughals, after establishing his powers in the Kalyan-Bhiwandi area. When Shivaji attacked the fort, the Mughal Sardar and fort chief Kesar Singh forced himself and the ladies in the fort to commit suicide so as to save themselves from falling into the hands of the Marathas. His mother along with her grandchild hid inside the fort by the fear of Shivaji, but such was the greatness of Shivaji that on finding them he sent them to their village with genuine respect and dignity.
