Posted: 06 Aug 2016 10:30 AM PDT Ratangadh – The Jewel of Sahyadris Trek Region: Kalsubai Fort Height: 4225 ft. ( Above M.S.L. ) Type: Hill Difficulty Level: Medium Base Village : Ratanwadi District: Ahmednagar Ratangad, The Jewel Fort of Sahyadris, is the origin of the river "Amrutvahini". The fort is as old as 2 millennia and is situated at banks of Bhandardara lake which has been a catchment since the days of the fort’s construction. The main attraction of this fort is "Amurteshwar" temple of the Hemadpant Era of the eighth century. Though there is little that remains of actual architecture, it gives a clear glimpse of the ancient sculpture. Ratangad is a natural rock peak with a cavity at the top that measure 10 feet high and 60 feets wide, forming a needle eye sort of appearance, aptly called "Nedhe". It has a water cistern which is usually filled with water throughout the year and was one of the largest rainwater catchment areas for its time. Fort’s main entrance is called as "Tryambak Darwaza". Also one can see the remains of a smaller entrance to the fort called as "Chor Darwaza". Two ladders that form a ladder trail provide easy access to the main fort area.
