Ladakh Festival | |
The Leh Valley lies at an altitude of about 3,500m and the surrounding mountains rise to over 6,000m. Ladakh as they say is the Land of high passes and it lives up to the tag as the three of the highest motor-able passes - Khardungla, Tanglangla and Changla lie in Ladakh. Khardungla- the highest of them all, at 18,360 ft gives way to the Nubra valley - the land of sand dunes. The Pensi la at 14,436 ft is the gateway to Zanskar, one of the most unexplored destinations. Ladakh is also known as "Little Tibet" as it is heavily influenced by Tibetan culture. The main road linking Ladakh with the rest of India is cut off by snow for 6 months or more each year. This is a high-altitude desert environment where water is precious. Agriculture and human settlements depend on water from snow melt, which flows towards the Indus River. Traditionally, most Ladakhis were subsistence farmers growing mainly barley and vegetables, or they were nomads tending goats and yaks. The opening of a road in the 1960s linking Ladakh with the plains brought large numbers of army personnel and the spread of the Indian civil administration. The annual fifteen-day Ladakh Festival, brings together the cultural heritage of various village contingents and troupes from the plateau. Temperature: The summer temp. is quite pleasant but in winter it touches the extreme. The winter temp touches as low as minus 30 degree (Leh & Kargil) and minus 60 degree in Drass. Subzero temp prevails from December to February throughout Ladakh, whereas, zero degree temp is experienced during rest of winter months. During summer the maximum temp rises from 20 to 35 degree in July and August. | |
