At an altitude of 690 m it is the last hill station before the coastal highlands of Goa and a relatively unexplored one. Amboli lies in the Sahayadri Hills of Western India, one of the world’s “Eco Hot-Spots” and it therefore abounds in a variety of fairly unique flora and fauna. 2. History: Historically, Amboli village came into being as one of the staging posts along the road from Vengurla port to the city of Belgaum, which was extensively used by the British to supply their garrisons in south and central India. In the hills of Amboli village lies the source of the Hiranyakeshi river, and an ancient Shiva temple (called Hiranyakeshwar) exists at the cave where the water emerges. The main attraction for tourists is the incredibly high rainfall (7 m average per year) and the numerous waterfalls and mist during the monsoons. Legend has it that there are 108 Shiva temples in and around Amboli of which only a dozen have been uncovered, one as recently as 2005 3. Major Attractions : Hiranya Keshi: Originated from the mouth of a cave near Hiranyakeshi (Hiranyakeshi is goddesses Parvati) Temple, a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, Hiranya Keshi river site is famous for its amazing natural beauty. It is situated 6 km from the town center. It is also an ideal place for fishing and meditation. Hiranyakeshi ugam, the starting point of the river Hiranya Keshi can be accessed through a tiny rocky path. Nangartas Waterfall: Situated 10 km from Amboli, it has pleasant surroundings. It falls deep and noisy into a beautiful and narrow ravine. A concrete bridge has been constructed over it so that tourists can enjoy its beauty. Best to see this waterfall during monsoons. Around 5 km from here is another waterfall known as ‘waterfall’ by the locals. Sawantwadi Palace: Sawantwadi is known as heritage city due to its old wada type houses & the palace. Earlier the palace was placed at the top of the Narendra hill. Khemsawant III constructed the existing palace in late 18th century. The famous Moti Lake, built in front of the palace in 1874, has added to its beauty. Moti Lake: Moti means pearl. Enchanting landscape is formed by the pleasing green hills all around this pearl of the Sawantwadi town. Boating can be enjoyed here. One can enjoy a delightful moment here after sunset. As the sun sets, streetlights are switched on at once around the complete periphery of the lake. Shilpgram: Sawantwadi is well known for its wooden toys. Wooden models of fruits and vegetables are famous worldwide. It is famous for wooden toys, handicraft of Bamboo, clay & wood. Narendra Hills and Narendra Van Udyan: The garden is situated on the top of the Narendra hill which is very famous for the variety of flora and fauna here. Nature Trails: Nature trails Daytime as well as night trails under expert guidance to bring you upclose to mother nature Kavalesaad Echo Point: This is the point of Amboli from where you can see the beautiful range of high hills, thick forest & the most beautiful sunset. Posted: 20 Aug 2015 08:30 PM PDT Aptly called Maharashtra's Cherapunji – a Biodiversity Hotspot, Amboli – is situated deep within the dense foliage of the Sahyadris range in the southern most portion of Maharashtra and exhibits the highest rainfall to the tune of 7446 mm. An amazingly calm and serene atmosphere of this place has still not seen the ugly face of commercialization. With the exotic lesser fauna, eye catching waterfalls, greenery spread upto the horizon, play of wind with clouds and densely packed fog in the woods with a surrounding silent and calm atmosphere and mouth watering Konkani food – one is bound to feel out of the world during his stay in Amboli.
