ONE DAY MONSOON TREK TO KAMANDURG ON 30 AUGUST 2015   Brief : Type: Hill Fort. Region: Thane. Height: 2140 ft (aprx.) Grade: Medium. Base Village: Devkundi.     Dome shaped peak near Tungareshwar, Kamandurg is rarely visited or known to Mumbaikars for that matter even the trekkers. The trail passes through very dense forest and seems like a marvel that the place is so close to Mumbai. The place is an ecstasy in the monsoon which is the best time to visit the Western Ghats. The fort does not have any fortification although the signs are existent in the surroundings. Small water tank dug out in the rock are present on the western side of the summit. The summit provides beautiful views of Vasai creek and the surrounding areas. Islands covered with mangroves and salt pans near the creek can also be seen from the summit. Tungareshwar hills also add to the beautiful scenery around the fort. The summit as it is seen from ground is not one single peak but two peaks separated by one small col. The round shape of the summit gives one an impression of volcano.   The itinerary for the Trek is as given below: Catch Churchgate Virar Train as Follows : Churchgate          : 06:21 am Mumbai Central   : 06:31 am Dadar                   : 06:38 am Bandra                 : 06:43 am Andheri                : 06:51 am Boivili                   : 07:06 am Dahisar                 : 07:10 am Mira Road             : 07:15 am Bhayandar            : 07:20 am Naigaon                :07:26 am Meeting Point  : Naigaon  Station by 07:30 am. 07:45 am : Move to base villages Devkhundi by tum tum. 0815 am :  Breakfast at base Villages. 09:00 am:   Introduction Round and Start Trek. 12:00 pm :  Reach the top,Explore the Fort, Lunch & Relax 01:00 pm : Start Descend 04:00 pm  : Reach  Base village.                       ONE DAY MONSOON TREK TO MAHULI ON 29 AUGUST 2015           Brief : Height: 2,815 feet Grade: Medium Time: ~ 2.5 hrs from Mahuli, Base Village Location / District : Asangaon, Thane District. About Mahuli Fort:             The creator of this fort is unknown. In 1485 this place came under rule of Malik Ahmed who was the founder of Nijamshahi. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nijamshahi, Adilshahi and Mughals of Delhi together tried to end Nijamshahi. In the year 1635-36, in difficult circumstances Shahaji Raje transferred himself with Jijabai and Shivaji to Mahuli. Khan Jaman, son of Mahabat Khan beleaguered this fort. Shahaji Raje asked for help to Portuguese. They refused and Shahaji Raje surrendered himself. Shivaji took this fort from Mughals on 8 Jan 1658. In 1661 it was given back and was won again by Shivrai. In treaty of Purandar, in 1665, Marathas lost these forts again. The Moghal sardar Manohardas Gaud was the in charge of this fort. He did much construction on the fort. In Feb 1670, Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli, but failed. Thousand of Marathas were killed by Moghals. It was a bad blow to Marathas. Even after this victory, Manohardas Gaud, the chief of the fort gave up his position and a new chief Alveerdi Beg was appointed. On 16 June 1670, after two months, Moropant Pingle conquered the forts and Mahuli, Bhandargad and Palasgad became part of Swarajya. Mahuli Fort At 2815 ft, this is a popular trekking destination and a paradise for rock-climbers because of many nearby pinnacles with interesting names like Vazir, Vishnu, etc, given by the local trekking and climbing fraternity. This mountain complex is actually a group of two or more hills with common cols and pinnacles. It is the highest point in the Thane district. The forest surrounding Mahuli has been declared as a sanctuary. Once Shahaji Raje, father of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, had this fortress under his belt.  Itineary of the Trek : Take the Slow Loc... 0NE DAY MONSOON TREK TO HARIHAR FORT ON 22 AUGUST 2015 Brief :  Height: 3676 ft  Region: Igatpuri  Place: Harihar fort  Region : Igatpuri  Grade: Medium    Detail about fort: -  Harihar fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village. It is built on a triangular prism of rock. Its three faces and two edges are absolutely vertical (90 degrees). The third edge towards the west is inclined at an angle of 75 degrees. A one metre wide rocky staircase with niches in it is carved out for ascending & descending the fort. There are 117 steps in all. After you climb the first rocky staircase (main entrance) we walk thru below a overhang with a sheer drop. Again one has to climb a set of steep stairs (with niches), then pass thru a staircase inside the rock (like Peth-kothligad fort) and then reach the top of the fort. The view from the top is excellent. After climbing these steps, we get up to the entrance door. The fort has got a tapering plateau with a raised level in the middle. There is a small temple of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva on the plateau. A small pond is there in front of this temple. Water from this pond can be used for drinking. Making headway from here we come across a palace having two rooms in it. 10 to 12 persons can be accommodated in this palace. One of the vertical drops of the fort facing the Nirgudpada village is called 'Scottish kada', perhaps because it was climbed for the first time in November 1986 by Doug Scott, the legendary Himalayan mountaineer & took him two days to do the climb. This cliff is about 170 meters in height.  Itinerary of trek: - 22 August 2015  Saturday : -  Catch  00:10 am CST-Kasara Slow Local.
