Velas

 
Velas is a village in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is noted as a birthplace of Nana Phadnis.He was sachiva- a secretary in Peshawai in Pune. It is also famous for its beaches and turtle festival which is held by the local people of Velas and Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra, Chiploon.
This year Velas Turtle festival will be starting from 15 Mar onwards, this tour is for experiencing the beauty of Konkan beaches with few hidden spots & yummy Konkani food.
 
If we have lucky charm, we might see some hatching of the Turtles... Fingers Crossed...

Bankot

 
This was the first residency of the British Raj in Southern Konkan. Although a very beautiful fort dotting the coastline of the Konkan strip, the fort of Himmatgad, now popularly known as Bankot (from the name of nearby village) is not a destination thronged by the tourists. There are couple of reasons attributable to its secluded status. One is that there is very little awareness and historical significance associated with Bankot and other is absence of any major township in the nearby areas contributing to lack of quality accommodation facilities. However, there is no denying that Bankot is a very beautiful fort and surely worth a visit.

Harihareshwar

 
One of the finest sea shores in India, Harihareshwar is a nice tourist destination located in the Konkan coast in Maharashtra. Harihareshwar is renowned for its tranquility and picturesque beach. Harihareshwar is also known as Dakshin Kashi by virtue of its importance in the spiritual arena of India, especially with an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Harihareshwar, as the name suggest is an abode of Lord Shiva.

Tadoba - Andhari  Tiger Reserve is a pristine and a unique eco-system located in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra.The reserve contains some of the best forest tracts and has emerged as a wonderful habitat for the Royal Bengal Tiger. It is also one of the 28 pPoject Tiger Reserves. With almost 50 tigers on the reserve and an area of 623 sq. km.; this bamboo forest is rightly referred to as "The Jewel of Vidharba". 

The name 'Tadoba' is the name of the God 'Tadoba' or "Taru", worshipped  by the tribals and  is famed to live in the dense forests of Tadoba and Andhari region. Tadoba’s  southern tropical dry deciduous forest of Deccan Peninsula comprises of teak forests with bamboo thicket, which are  wildlifer's dream. It lies in Chandrapur Ddstrict and is Maharashtra's oldest National Park created in 1955. The National Park is 623  sq. kms in area, consisting of two forested rectangles of the Tadoba and Andhari range. The best thing about the park is that it remains open all round the year, even in the monsoons.

Tadoba is the oldest National Park of the state of Maharashtra.  The rich deciduous forest mainly consists of bamboo & teak. The other trees are gardenia, satinwood, mahua and jamun. The other trees which are found within the protected area are, ain, arjun, behada, bija, bhera, bor, bel, chichwa, dhawada, kusum, mowai, phetra, rohan, salai, semal, shisham, sisoo, shivan, surya, sirus, tendu, etc.

Other than the Tiger, Tadoba Tiger Reserve is home to rare Indian wildlife like Leopards, Sloth bears, Gaur, Wild Dogs, Hyenas, Civets, Jungle cats and many species of the Indian deer like Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgai, and the Barking Deer.

 

The Tadoba lake sustains the marsh Crocodile, which were once common all over Maharashtra. Tadoba is also an ornithologist's paradise with a varied diversity of aquatic bird-life, and raptors.
195 species of birds have been recorded, including three endangered varieties. The grey headed fishing Eagle ichthyophaga icthyaetus and the crested serpent eagle and the spilornis cheela are some of the raptors.

Description
Sewri aka Shivdi is one of the 7 original islands of which formed Mumbai. It also has a fort and the remnants can be seen today also. In 1996, the mangrove swamps of Sewri were declared a protected ecology. Lesser Flamingos from other parts of India come to these mangroves to breed. They arrive at the mudflats from the months of October to March every year, but they can be spotted there till it starts raining.

Yeoor is a location in Thane district in Maharashtra, India that lies in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is known for its panthers and wildlife.

Yeoor Hills (or also known as Mama Bhanja Hills) is a hill station of Thanaites. This naturally beautiful and pollution free area attracts lot of people. It is an unspoiled area, carpeted by natural foliage and fauna.

Yeoor Hills is home to about 78 known species of birds and about 12 different species of animals. Besides, it has the highest density of leopards in India. A trek through Yeoor Hills at the Thane end of Sanjay Gandhi National Park will be an enchanting experience.

We are glad to announce Velas Turtle Festival 2014..!!

 Velas is a small village in Ratnagiri district which is famous for the Olive ridley turtle population that visits the Velas beach every year and lays their eggs.At Velas, turtle conservation movement is undertaken by the villagers. An NGO named Nisargmitra has taken the initiative to conserve olive ridley turtles by providing protection to their eggs.

Witnessing a baby turtle coming out of the egg and then finding its way to the sea by those baby steps is an unforgettable moment.

Velas may seem like a yet another fishing village on the western coast of Maharashtra. About 220km away from Bombay, less than hundred houses made of the locally available laterite stones, sloping roofs standing amidst palm and beetlenut groves comprise this sleepy hamlet. The Arabian Sea lashes onto the beach nearby which, typical of the region is lined with suru trees. But the village isn't so, it is the Village of the Turtles. It significance lies in being part of the biodiversity of the region and the role its inhabitants playing in conserving it. For, every winter the beach of Velas becomes a nesting ground for various turtles including the endangered Olive Ridley Leatherback, Green turtle and Hawskbill species. These eggs hatch after a period of 80-90 days and the locals take it upon themselves to make sure the eggs hatch and the young ones enter the brave new world safely. The best part is that the locals invite everyone to witness this spectacle each year as a part of the Velas Turtle festival that commences from 14th of March in 2014.

The pioneering efforts of a local NGO - Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra has borne fruit and since 2002, each year all the nests on the western coast at Velas, Murud, Harnai, Dapoli and other sites are carefully protected and conserved. Both biological and human threats have been minimized and every year many hatchlings begin a new life on the shores of the Arabian. Over the years, this festival has become a major attraction and over 200 tourists descend upon this quaint konkani village every weekend. Around 20 households throw open their houses/spare rooms for tourists at a nominal charge which includes all vegetarian meals(though fish/chicken can be organised at certain households at an extra cost). These homestays are a great way to connect to the locals and get a glimpse into their lifestyle. The facilities are basic, dormitory style with a common, clean toilet available for about Rs. 400-450 per head/night. The SNM and Kasav Mitra Mandal staff will maintain a calendar detailing the number of eggs hatched and also likely dates. Although many tour operators organise all-inclusive trips to Velas, this post is aimed for the solo traveller or a small group that wishes to enjoy this spectacle on their own.

All the eggs laid on the beach are collected and placed in a common hatchery which is barricaded from all sides and is guarded throughout the day. Each morning at 0700 and evening at 1730-1800 the baskets covering the lid are open to check if any turtles have hatched, if they have they are counted and carefully laid in another basket and taken closer to the water. They are then gently placed on the sand and they slowly make their way to the water. Their first baby steps are not only endearing to watch but also important if it is a female, as she records in her memory the site of her birth only to return here after 15 years to lay her eggs.

Remember

• It is a conservation site and not a picnic site.
• Don't use plastic, don't litter and most of all don't shout, holler, yell when the turtles are released.
• Wear sensible clothes, although it is a beach the locals are conservative and might take offence at beach attire suitable elsewhere.
• The route to the beach passes through a dirt track built over the mangroves, in the evenings it gets pitch dark and there are no street lights. Do carry a torch with you for such emergencies.

On my last visit, I was disappointed to notice such unruly behavior by many tourists present whose sole aim was to capture these moments on their fancy DSLR cameras and gather likes on Facebook. The tour operators were not seen giving any instructions and participated in this tomfoolery too. The turtles follow their instinct and don't need cheering least of all blessings of Ganapati Bappa.

Planning your trip: To witness about 3 sessions of this unveiling, you must depart from Bombay/Pune on Friday night. The only ST bus headed to Velas from Mumbai Central ST Depot departs at 1230 am and reaches Velas by 730-8. The ST stand at Velas is a fifteen minute walk from the beach so one has to typically rush to witness the spectacle on the first morning. It is quite a bumpy ride but costs only about Rs.250 or so. The SNM staff will charge a nominal Rs. 50 as entry fees at the beach.

The first day can be then spent visiting the nearby Bankot Fort or lazing around in the shade of the house you are staying at. The cliffs and the mangroves around are home to several birds including the star of the Konkan coast - the White Bellied Sea Eagle, Kingfishers (commong, white breasted), Ibis, the majestic Brahminy Kite, bee eaters, fly catchers and many more. Do visit the estuary formed by R. Savitri which holds possibilities of many good sightings of winter migrants.

In the evening you may attend another session at the beach, watch a brilliant sunset and walk back to the village as darkness takes over to watch the fireflies glow in the darkness all around.

At nights the sky lits up with several stars and one can indulge in some stargazing if the moonlight permits.

Next morning, after another session on the beach, you may climb up the cliff onto the southern end for a breathtaking view of the beach and the surroundings around.

Return Journey: The return ST bus leaves at 9am but you may skip that and take the ferry from the nearby Bankot jetty to  Bagmandla Jetty to reach Harihareshwar onto the other side. From here you may either take an auto to Shrivardhan from where many buses to Bombay ply or you may take a very interesting(but long and tiring) coastal route up north.

Climbing up the coast: From Harihareshwar take a share auto, get to Shrivardhan from there head to the small town of Borli and from there take a share auto to Dighi. Dighi is a small port town just across from Murud. Take a connecting ferry to Rajapuri Jetty, Murud, the impregnable Murud Janjira fort appears on your left. At the jetty, get down and take an auto to Murud Depot. From there, take a bus headed to Alibaug and then at Alibaug finally book yourself a ticket to the ferry going home. The ferry companies (PNP, Ajanta) run connecting buses to Mandwa. At Mandwa, your final boat ride of the day will take you to Gateway of India and just like the visitors to India, in the times of the Raj, you will enter our city through Apollo Bunder, as the sun sets over Gateway of India.

For Driving down: Follow NH17 until Mangaon and then turn right towards Harihareshwar at Mhasala. At Bagmandla, go to the heavy vehicle ferry that can transport a Tempo Traveller and a Car at a time over the Savitri estuary and from the other side - Bankot(Vesavi) which is about 3km away from Velas.

Biking down: Bike transfers are allowed between Rajapuri and Dighi, so you will have to bike down until Murud following the Wadhkal-Alibaug-Revdanda-Murud route and then from the Rajapuri jetty, cross over to Dighi and from there bike down to Borli-Shrivardhan-Harihareshwar and Baghmandla to cross over yet again to reach Velas.

If you have more days at your disposal, you can visit the scenic Diveagar beach near Borli or go further south towards Dapoli, Guhagar, Ganpatipule.

Velas Marine Festival is a fine exmaple at combining conservation efforts with tourism. Although uncontrolled tourism can be quite harmful to the cause. The tour operators that organise such tours must enforce the standard rules that are applied at such sensitive places. No litter, shouting, no flash photography are some of the basic ones. But as individual travellers, if we take it upon ourselves to set an example, it will go a long way in spreading awareness about responsible tourism and encouraging many such activities.

Mount Everest is the roof of the world. Standing at 29,029 ft it is the highest point on the planet and is well known to command some of the most amazing views possible to witness with the human eye. However you don’t have to go to the top to appreciate the awesome majesty imposed by this fantastic mountain. The climb is a twelve-day hike through some of the Himalayas most impressive valleys and ranges to the base camp of the world’s largest mountain. The route passes through some of the Himalayas most stunning areas and offering some of the most phenomenal panoramic views of Everest. There is no need to be well-seasoned mountaineers, but it is a strenuous climb, and will take dedication and perseverance to reach the top.

This classic walk through the Sherpa homeland of Solu-Khumbu is strenuous high altitude trek with a clear-cut goal – to see Everest. Much to their surprise, many people find the snout-like Everest out-ranked by peaks like Ama Dablam and the Lhotse wall. The journey starts with the Panvel local according to given train times below. People should meet at Kurla station by 5.45 AM. People coming from western Central line will meet at Panvel station. from here we will reach the base village of Kalavantin (Thakurwadi) by auto / Bus.
Will start trek with breakfast and small intro round by 9.00am. will reach on top by 12.00 and start to descend by 2.00.by 6.30 we will back to panvel.

 Mumbai Travellers is happy to invite you all for the newly explored Wayangani Turtle festival. The  Wayangani Turtle Fest will definitely make you interested in the Cultural  and Bio-Diversity and the amazing celebration atof  Wayangani. 

Olive Ridley, a very rare species of turtle advanced towards the sea in the month of December and remain there up to the March for breeding purpose. They lay eggs in sand. This sight is exciting and immemorable. That all may get chance to witness this event with Kirat Trust, with the co-operation of the people of Wayangani village, has arranged the Turtle Festival.

 Outing Schedule:

21st Feb : 

Early morning reach to Vengurla Bus Depot around 07:00 am. Freshen up and proceed to enjoy the Dolphin Sight-seeing from Wayangani sea-shore. return back to the sea-shore for the breakfast. Post breakfast, watch the film based on Tortoise and Turtles and have the interactive session with the experts.Have lunch.Rest till the evening. Have tea and leave for the Wayangani sea-shore sighting and preparation of eatable cashew-nuts in sand. Proceed to the Cultural Program to “Dashavatari Drama”. Post Dinner, lights off for the sleep.

22nd Feb :

Early morning proceed towards the Jungle trail. Observe the animals and the birds with the help of the local guide.Return for the breakfast. there will be film show and live demonstration of arts by the Well-Known Artist-Mr.Arun Dabholkar.Have Lunch. Afternoon free for leisure.Have tea and proceed for fishing in the creek.Enjoy the evening in the local cultural program and dance performances and Malwani songs.

23rd Feb :

Early morning  witness those baby turtles coming out of the egg and then finding its way to the sea by those baby steps.Have Tea and return back to Vengurla Bus Depot.

Team Yatri Sahyadri has organized “A Nite trek to Duke’s Nose, Khandala” on 15^th February, 2014.

Some basic information about the trek is as follows:

Location: Duke’s Nose, (also known as Nagphani)
Range: Sahyadri, Khandala
District: Raigad
Level: Medium

About the place:
Duke's Nose stands 12 km from Lonavla, clearly visible from the highway while driving towards Mumbai. This landmark in Khandala is popular with hikers. The cliff owes its name to the Duke of Wellington, whose ample nose it resembles.

Duke’s Nose is well known for Rappelling events that happen during winter season more.

Program:
08:45 pm (Saturday evening) : Reporting at Dadar Station. (pls carry your ticket to Lonavala Station)
09:15 pm: Board CSTM Latur SF Express (General Compartment) Travel time approx 2.15 hours.
11.30 pm: We will reach at Lonavala station.
11:30 pm to 12.00 am: Rest.

12.15 am: Start trek From Lonavala Station towards Base Village (Kuruvanda). Trek time approx 3 hrs max.

3.00 am: Reach at atop Plateau. Put us the base Camp. And Rest

6.00am Wakeup Call

7.00 am: start Climbing the Duke’s nose

7.15 am: Reach at Top. Take some Clicks of the wonderful Khandala, Lonavala region, Express Highway and adjacent mountain range at Sunrise.

8.00 am: Start Decend towards Lonavala

11.00 am: Reach Lonavala Station (Take Tickets) and proceed towards Mumbai by available trains

Charges: Rs: 250
Includes : Morning breakfast.
Expert Guidance for the trek. : Lonavala –Kuruvanda- Dukes Nose & Return

Here is a list of all the things that we need to carry for the trek:

1. Your ticket to Lonavala
2. Haversack to put in all the things to be carried. So that one has hands free while trekking.
3. A bottle of water (minimum 2Ltrs).
4. TORCH (with Extra Batteries)

5. Camera (Optional), Avoid wearing Gold and other jewelry (at own risk)
6. Electoral / Enerzyl powder, 2 Lemon, some snacks & biscuits, plate, spoon, glass (all reusable, compulsory).
7. Personal medicines & 2 plastic bags for weight distribution, insect repellant cream (Odomos or similar brand).
8. A good trekking shoes and extra clothes (compulsory). Please do not DONATE your Shoes to Sahyadri Mountains
