The region of Gorakhgad and Machchindragad has a dense forest cover. Fort Gorakhgad is quite small in size. It was had strategic importance during the region of Shahaji Raje. However, no major battle is recorded to have taken place here. It was used in Shivaji's era to patrol the nearby region and was used as a stopover station during the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Though small in size, there is enough availability water and a lot of space for accommodation. The fort gets its name from Saint Gorakhnath, who performed his "Sadhana" in this place.

Gorakhgad
Two cisterns can be seen just after emerging through the entrance and the path climbs up further ahead. Further, a small step-way descends down to the large caves that are carved out in the main rock of the pinnacle. Nature's grandeur can be appreciated here with the magnificent view of two large frangipani trees leaning over the valley and the excellent sight of Machchindragad. There are in total fourteen cisterns on the fort, however, only the three tanks near to the cave have portable water. There is a small Mahadeo temple with Nandi at the top.

History: Raigad was earlier known as Rairi. In the 12th century Rairi was ruled by Shirke-Palegar family. After changing several hands, it was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from Chandrarao More in 1656 AD and decided to form it as capital of Maratha Kingdom. Shivaji Maharaj renamed it as Raigad.

Raigad is strategically important as it is situated on an irregular wedge-shaped mass of rock, detached from the main body of Sahyadri Mountains by a deep valley and inaccessible from three sides. INFORMATION
Raigad is one of the most important forts in the history of Marathas, being the first capital of independent Marathi kingdom or "Hindavi Swarajya". Raigad was known as the mountain of  "Rairi" before it was captured by Shivaji Maharaj.Raigad fort is situated 25 km north of the modern day Mahad town. The fort is surrounded on its north and east by Kaal River, and Gandhari River flows from its west side. Fort Lingana is situated to the east side and Kokandiva to the north. If the skies are clear, we can see Rajgad -Torna on the east and Pratapgad, Vasota and Makarandagad on the south.
Raigad is one of the important forts which exhibits the intelligent architecture adopted by Marathas in 17th century.

Raigad has been one of the most importance forts, and has been a witness of significant events –
  • Shiv Raajabhishek (The Coronation ceremony of Shivaji Maharaj) was the most significant event in the history of India.
  • Shivaji Maharaj became the King of the newly formed Maratha kingdom after a struggle of more than 300 years. Shivaji Maharaj took the blessings of Bhavani Mata of Pratapgad on 19th May 1674 and offered a golden umbrella (Chatra) worth Rs. 56,000 to the goddess before the ceremony. The ceremony took place on the auspicious day of 6th June 1674, which was a Saturday.
  • On 24th September 1674, Shivaji Maharaj underwent another ceremony for coronation for the commoners. This was done by Nischalpuri Gosavi. Kavi Bhushan has aptly written an extended description of this fort in his works.
  • On 4th February 1675, Sambhaji Maharaj's thread ceremony took place on Raigad, and on 7th March 1680, it was Rajaram Maharaj's ceremony. 8 days later Rajaram got married to Prataprao Gujar's daughter.
  • On 3rd April 1680, Shivaji Maharaj passed away on this fort, which was the most devastating moment for the Maratha regime.
  • On 16 February 1681, Sambhaji became the crowned king of Maratha Empire.

Rajgad Fort

Torna Fort: 4200 feet

Base Village: Gunjavne - Velhe

Rajgad – The name describes the place itself. The king of all the forts.
It is to the south-west 40 Kms from Pune. It boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji on any fort. He spent almost 25/30 yrs here. Rajgad is famous for its construction.
The fort can be divided into four different parts based on geographical terrain and fortification. These are the three sub-plateaux (Machee) namely Padmavati Machee, Suvela Machee and Sanjevani Machee, and at the centre is the Ballekilla.

Padmavati Machee (north end) : This machee is the site of Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake, Chor Darwaja, Pali Darwaja, Gunjavane Darwaja, Daru Kothar (storage of arms and ammunition), Diwankhana, Rajwada (ruins), Ghod Tale (Horse Lake), Sadar (office) and Dhalkathi (flag hoisting place).

Suvela Machee (south east) : This is another grand machee facing east with lots of secret routes and doorways. This one is a double-stepped fortified machee with the steps separated by a beautiful bastioned doorway. At the end of first step a hole cuts across the rock; one can sit in this hole (nedhe). The final (lowest) step like Sanjeevani Machee has a double curtain wall. To the south side of this machee one can see a beautiful triangular bastion called Kaleswari buruz having an escape door near it. The home of the renowned military leader Tanaji Malusare was in this machee.

Sanjeevani Machee (southwest/west end) : This huge, beautiful and royally constructed machee faces west and has a three-stepped (layered) fortified structure. Each of the lower levels is separated from the higher one by a fortified bastion with a gate that could be defended independently. The lowest level is beautifully fortified by double curtain walls (chilkhathi) separated by a deep trench, on average 12 feet across. One can walk between these walls. The outer wall has openings to let soldiers out for sudden attack.

Bale Killa (centre) : This is the highest part of the fort which has remains of palaces, water cisterns and caves. It has a beautiful entrance door called Mahadarwaja. One can view the whole fort and the vast surrounding expanse.

Torna: the fort is also known as prachandagad (huge fort), due to its massive size. In 1646, when Shivaji was 16, he launched his first military attack by capturing Torna fort, paving the way for the great empire. Many battles have been fought on this fort.
The fort is truly grand and stretches for couple of kilometers.

Fascinating points on Torna fort:

Goddess Toranjai:
it is a simple temple where goddesses Somjai and Toranjai are worshiped. Ahead we can see the lakes toran and mhasoba.

Maal and Safeli Bastions: On the west of Kothji Darwaja are the bastion maal, and the latter one is to the south of the former. Near Safeli is the construction called lakadkhaana, where wood was stored. Here is the way to Kokan Darwaja and Budhla Machi.

Budhla Machi: In Marathi ‘budhla’ means vessel, and budhla machi looks like a vessel kept upside down. This cliff is a breathtaking spot on the fort.

Bini Darwaja: This is the main entrance to the fort from velhe and is situated to the northwest of the fort. The bastion on the left side has collapsed. The path ahead leads to the Kothi Darwaja.

Kothi Darwaja: Ascending the steps carved in the rock, we enter the Kothi Darwaja facing east. Here we come across some guard rooms. Way along the wall towards east takes us to the temple of goddess Toranjai.

Hanuman Bastion: This bastion is situated to the east of Kothi Darwaja. Here we can see the idol of hanuman facing south and a flag post. The way ahead leads to the bastion Bhel. Further eastwards we come to Zunjar Machi.

Temple of goddess Mengai: this is the only place on the fort where one can stay. It has two doors and the roof is stillin the needs of repairs. In front of the temple is a Deepmala.

Zunjar Machi: It is situated on the western side & a wonderful spot to see.

About the Place :
Height - 2625 ft
The British discovered Matheran and developed it as a famous tourist destination. The history dates back to the British era when Hugh Malet discovered the hill station in the year 1850. It is around 100 kms away from the industrial capital of India, Mumbai. Located at an elevation of about 800m (2,625) above the sea level, the place boasts of its panoramic views and breathtaking charm. Another special thing on Matheran is that it has no tarred roads and the path is made of red laterite earth.
Being one of those few places in the globe where absolutely no vehicles are allowed, it is something very unique about Matheran. The fresh unpolluted air free of smoke and the beautiful surroundings makes it a most visited tourist destination in west India. If you want to sit back and enjoy the mesmerizing charm of nature, then Matheran is the place for you. The Union Environment Ministry has declared the region as an eco sensitive region.

Dear Friends,

We at Trek O Phy, invites you for a trip to Explore the Unseen parts of Konkan region on 07 to 09 Feb 2014. Despite being flanked on both ends by two of India’s top urban centres, it’s laudable how the Konkan Coast manages to latch on to its virginal bounties. It is a picturesque strip of land peppered with postcard beaches, vivid green paddy fields, rolling hills and decaying forts. Travelling through this tropical backwater can be sheer bliss.

Isolated Beaches, Gad river, Backwater safari, Jungle trail, travel to less known Islands, Dolphin Spotting, Visit to Sindhudurga fort,  Fishing at night, night stay on beach and delicious local Kokani cuisine are the highlighted things to expect in this tour. Also the Scuba diving, snorkeling and water sports can be the add ons of the adventure and exploring.
About the Destinations :

Sindhudurg Sea Fort:
Fort built on Kurte Island by “Shivaji” the king of Maratha Empire in 1664. A harbor blocked with submerged bed of reefs delighted Shivaji to erect this fort. 3000 labors toiled very hard to complete it within 3 years. It is spread over 48 acres of land, outer walls 2 miles around the ramparts having 32 bastions. Within contains houses of natives, Shivaji’s temple, his finger and foot prints, shrines, wells and ruined structures.

Beaches & Islands :
Most of the beaches & Islands are not yet truly discovered by the tourists and are far better than the so called popular beaches in India. We are giving you a quick reference of the beaches along the Konkan coast.

Dolphin Spotting :
Konkan’s beaches are popular viewpoint for Spinner and Common Dolphins. They may be spotted any time of the day on the length of the shore. Their presence makes Konkani beaches real exotica on the west coast of India. Fishermen's traditional boats are always geared to make your close encounter with Dolphins.

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling:
The whole new underwater world of exotic marine life is recently discovered in Sindhudurg near shallow waters of Tarkarli and in the middle of the sea towards southward burnt islands. This makes paradise a potential diving destination of India. Butterfly fish, Snapers, Angelfish, Grouper, shoals of yellow striped fusiliers and lobsters are common sight.
