Dear OffBeaters , We invite you for trek to Lingana Base decend down boryatachi nal and Climb to Lingana pinnacle on 4th & 5th January 2014.

Trivia:
Lingana Fort

Type : Hill Fort
Height : 3000 ft approx

Region : Mahad / Velha
District : Raigad
Grade: Very difficult

Lingana is a massive pinnacle on the mainline of the Sahyadris between Raigad and Torna. It takes its name from its shape which is like a linga. It is 2969 feet high with an ascent of four miles, the first half is easy to climb while the second is difficult. Its rock cut steps have been destroyed and the fort is almost completely inaccessible. The top of the fortified rock is 2500 feet square. No fortifications or buildings remain but there are traces of a grain store and some cisterns

Lingana fort was built by Shivaji in 1648 to secure central Konkan against the Sidis. Under the Marathas, Lingana was used as a penal settlement. The prisoners were confined to rock dungeons with one dungeon holding 50 prisoners. Lingana was captured by a Colonel Prother in 1818 and destroyed it so that no one capture it back and stay on it. Thereafter the plight of this great monument has become sad. Today it is a attraction for rock - climbers.

About the Place :
Visapur Fort:
| Height: 3040 ft | Type: Hill Fort | Grade: Medium|
Visapur Fort lay in Nane Maval. This region came under Nizamshahi after dissolution of Bahmani rule. It went into the hands of Mughals in the treaty of Mahuli, between Shahajiraje and Mughals. Seeing that the Mughals were not able to keep a control over the region, Shivaji Maharaj captured almost all the forts here till 1660. However, he lost the fort again to Mughals in the treaty of Purandar in 1665. However Aurangzeb broke the treaty. In 1682, Shahbuddin, a Mughal Sardar invaded the region, and killed 60 Marathas in an anguish.
However Marathas escaped to Visapur. They were chased, but moved in time to the village of Kusapur. On 4th march 1818 Colonel Prother captured Visapur, and the next day Lohgad fell into his hands.

The mountain of Visapur is significant, as Bhaje caves have been carved out in the same mountain. The destruction caused by Mughals and English is clearly evident from the injuries on the Bhaje caves. These beautiful caves could have been bombarded by cannon balls, because much of their part has been broken.

The main characteristic of this fort is the strong fortification built on a large plateau, to make it one of the strongest forts. A large plateau of this size is found on many less forts. It is difficult to fire cannons on the fort due to its position. We can see the injuries of destruction caused by Mughals and British on Bhaje caves, but this has not affected Visapur much.

Friends, you all are requested to carry packed Dinner for the trek as there are no villagers and proper hutments for arranging food, water etc. Also there's nothing available on top except a mind blowing scenery, beautiful construction of rock-cut steps, thrill of climb & Loads of water. So do carry decent amount of eatables, and personal medicines as required.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear All,

KURDUGAD (VISHRAMGAD) :: Near the base of the fort is a temple of Goddess of KURDAI. On the way up, there are remnants of a gateway. Entering by this gateway a Hanuman Idol, about 1m in height grabs our attention. Behind this idol we find a natural ghal (groove). This groove can easily accommodate around 100-150 people. Fort has 2 large pinnacles, of one comprises the fort top. One can traverse the path around the pinnacle, but it is damaged completely at certain places in between. There are one or two water tanks on the fort. The top offers excellent view of entire nearby region. Location of Kurdugad attaches to it real significance, strategically. A pass called Tamhini Ghat, can be easily controlled from here. Besides, it has Raigad & Kokan diva forts on its backside.
.
MANGAD :: Mangad, a small hill fort, is placed on a spur rising from the ghats. It lies in Bhuleshwar range, at an altitude of about 3, 252 feet, and is about 25 km from Tamhini. The fort overlooks the Kumbha pass.

Trek Details :
Type : Hill Fort
Height : 2100 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade : Medium
District : Raigad
Region : Karjat
Base Village : Neral

Some details about Peb Fort :Located in the same mountain range as Matheran, Peb fort is a enjoyable trek for a day’s outing.
The fort derives it name from the Goddess 'Pebi'; Peb is also called 'Vikatgad' for its supposed shape of the Elephant Headed God, 'Ganesh'. The trek to the top involves surmounting a small rock patch and a ladder. The fort is famous for its caves which are maintained by disciples of Swami Samartha and the meditation chambers carved out from the rock inside the mountain. To get inside the meditation chamber, one has to crawl through a narrow passage in the rock and then climb down into the meditation chamber. The chamber is very well maintained with tiles on the floor for ppl to sit and meditate.

The fort also has a temple dedicated to Swami Samartha on the top and has the footwear or 'Padukas' worn by the great saint kept on the top. The view of the entire Neral and Karjat region from the top is worth the climb. Another attraction of the trek is the only standing Bastion or Buruj facing the Panorama point of Matheran, the view from here is just too beautiful to describe.
