Bhigwan

Bhigwan is a small town around 100 kms away from Pune and is also referred to as the “Bharatpur of Maharashtra”, as it becomes a hotbed of migratory birds during the winter. Bhigwan is at one end of the huge Yashwant Sagar reservoir, forming the backwaters of the Ujain dam. One of the main attractions during the migratory season is the arrival of the pink greater flamingos. During the months of early jan – late feb, this place is thronged by bird lovers from all over Maharashtra.

Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary consist of dry deciduous scrub forest with interspersed grasslands. The main species are Acacia catechu (Khair), Acacia sp. (Hivar), Dalbergia latifolia (Sisoo), Ziziphus mauritiana (Ber), Carissa opaca (Karwand), Alysicarpus bupleurifolius, Cyathocline purpurea, Eriocauion diane, Merremia emarginata, Cucumis melo, Cyperus kyllingia, Striga densiflora, Mareilea minuta.

The main species are Gazelia bennetti (Chinkara), Hyaena (Hyaena hyaena), Canis lupus (Wolf), Vulpes bengalensis (Indian Fox).

Yatri Sahyadri has organized a trip to the Velas, Ratnagiri on 06^th– 08^th March, 2015 (Starting 05^th night) as a part of the Velas Turtle Festival, to watch the emergence of Olive Ridley Turtle Hatchlings from the nests.

Some basic information about the trip and the location:

Velas is a small village in the northern most tip of Ratnagiri District, off the western coast of Maharashtra about 250 kms south of Mumbai and about 20kms south of Harihareshwar the Kashi of the West a major place of pilgrimage. Besides, Harihareshwar is a popular beach resort with two beaches, one to the north and the other to the south of the temple.
Harihareshwar, along with Shrivardhan and DiveagarBeachis a weekend destination for weekend getaway from Mumbai.

SCHEDULE:
Day 1 – 05^thMarch, 2015.

22.00hrs: Bus departs from near Magathane Depot, opp. TATA STEEL LTD., Borivali East on the Western Express Highway,
22.30hrs: Pickup from Oberoi Mall Goregaon East,
23.00hrs: Pickup from Bisleri Junction, Andheri East,
23.30hrs:Pickup from Sion Station.

DAY 2 – 06^thMarch, 2015.

09.30hrs: Leave for sight seen to Kadyavarach Ganapati, Yakub Baba Dargah & Harney jetty/Fish auction.

19.00hrs: Back to Nijsure’s home.

Day 4 – 08^th March,2015.

11.00hrs: Visit the HarihareshwarKalbhairavTemple,

15.00hrs: Leave for Mumbai,

We will reach Mumbai in about 6-9 hours subject to traffic conditions as most weekenders will be heading back to Mumbai during that time.

Holi Hai !!!!

About the Tour :

The tradition of playing colours on Holi draws its roots from a legend of Radha and Krishna. It is said that young Krishna was jealous of Radha's fair complexion since he himself was very dark. He narrated his woe to mother Yashoda, who teasingly asked him to colour Radha's face in which ever colour he wanted. In a mischievous mood, Krishna applied colour on Radha's face. The tradition of applying colour on one's beloved is being religiously followed till date.

People from all corners of India, rather, world gather at Mathura-Vrindavan every year to feel the essence of Holi in the land of Krishna. People relive the legends of Holi associated with Radha and Krishna and play pranks the young Krishna played with the cowgirls called gopis. The underlying feeling of this fun-frolic was love and devotion. Even today, romance can be experienced in the very atmosphere in the Krishna-nagari. One just needs to breathe in this air and drench oneself in the feeling of love and romance. Myriad colours of Holi are simply a facade on this. Celebrations Continue for a Week

Barsana: Holi with Sticks :

Indian men don't always rule the roost! The women of Barsana village near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh beat up men from neighboring Nandgaon village with sticks, in what's known as Lathmar Holi celebrations. Lathmar Holi takes place around a week before the main day of Holi. The following day of the Holi, the celebrations move to Nandgaon village.

About Barsana Holi : The Holi celebrations in Braj begin at Barsana, Radha’s (Krishna’s consort) village, six days before Holi. Krishna arrives, with the men from Nandgaon. The people of Nandgaon and Barsana play Holi together. The men wear huge turbans decorated with leaves to protect themselves from the colour and beatings of the women of Barsana. Lathmar Holi (literally Stick Beatings Holi) is played at sunset, when women dressed in beautiful sarees hit the men with sticks. They unleash a shower of sticks on the naughty boys of Nandgaon to teach them a lesson for all the broken pots and for teasing the girls of Barsana.

Today we will check out from Govardhan and move towards Vrindavan. The trail to this exotic fort is quite simple. We can reach the top of the pinnacle which is carved from inside forming staircase leading to the top. There is a huge cave, small temple and many water cisterns at the base of the pinnacle.

History:
The cave and the temple carvings date back to the 13th century. Not much is known about the history until the 18th cent. In 1716, this cave was captured by the British. Then later on, on November 2, 1817, it was recaptured by the Marathas under theleadership of Bapurao who belonged to the generation after Bajirao. It was recaptured by the British, on December 30, 1817, the very next month, under Captain Brooks. The British had the fort till 1862 as an outpost for vigilance on the surrounding valley and the hills all around it.

The trek involves trekking at night. Torch compulsory. We would return to Karjat station on 25th Jan 4:30 PM.

Anjaneri Fort :The fort of Anjaneri, being the birthplace of lord ‘Hanuman’, has a great historical importance. Lord Hanuman was son of Maharaj 'Keshari' and ‘Anjanimata’ also known the son of ‘Pavan Dev’ (the wind), and hence the fort is called as ‘Anjaneri’. Anjaneri is one of the important forts in the ranges of Trimbyakeshwar near Nashik.

Anjaneri village is at a walking distance of 10 to 15 minutes from Anjaneri Phata. Two pinnacles called ‘Navara’ and ‘Navari’ can be seen from Anjaneri village.

On the way from Anjaneri village to the fort some carvings can be seen in the caves near the Ashram on top. The carvings are intriguing and eye catching. The caves and the inscriptions are believed to be from the Jain followers.

The temple of ‘Anjani Mata’, a big marvelous temple devoted to the mother of Lord Hanuman, is another attraction. The temple is quite big. It is a proper place to accommodate on the fort.

At a certain distance from this temple two different ways can be seen. The way to left hand side takes us directly to ‘Seeta cave’ within 10 minutes. This cave is made up of two rooms. 10 to 12 people can stay here comfortably. There are many carvings inside the cave.

Another way takes us directly to citadel, where one more temple of ‘Anjani Mata’ can be seen. It takes 20 minutes to reach this temple. This temple is also quite big. The perimeter of the fort is very large.

Reach the Base village by 12.00 pm
Start return journey.
Have Lunch in Enroute.
Reach Kasara by 5.00 pm

About the Tour :

Kalavantin Durg (Kalavantin’s Fort), is located between Matheran and Panvel in the Indian State of Maharashtra, at an elevation of 2,300 feet in the Western Ghats. It was built at the pinnacle of the rocky plateau very close to Matheran. This fort can be approached via chilling steep climb. The steps leading up to the fort were cut into the rocks of the hill.

Day 1 :
Meet at Panvel railway station by 09:30 pm and move towards Thakurwadi- Base Village by private/public transportation. Reach base camp by 10:30 pm and start the night trek to ‘Prabalmachi’. Have dinner and move towards the Night Trail. Overnight Stay in at Prabalmachi.

Day 2 :
Early morning freshen up, have breakfast and start ascending for the Kalavantin . Reach at the top, explore the fort. Have some dry snacks and back to Prabalmachi. Post Lunch, start descending.
