We at Trek Mates India invite you all for the “Historical Tour to Aurangabad”  on 12th December to 14th December 2014 (Starting on 11th Thursday Night)

Aurangabad : Aurangabad is a city in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India. Aurangabad (meaning "Built by the Throne") is named after the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as Bibi Ka Maqbara. The administrative headquarters of the Aurangabad Division or Marathwada region, Aurangabad is said to be a City of Gates and the strong presence of these can be felt as one drives through the city. Recently, Aurangabad has been declared as Tourism Capital of Maharashtra.[1] It is also one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Some details of the tour:

The places that we will be visiting:

1) Daulatabad Fort
2) Aurangabad Caves
3) Bibi Ka Maqbara

4) Ellora Caves
5) Ajanta Caves

6) Panchakki

Daulatabad Fort :

Daulatabad is situated 13 km from Aurangabad. The fort stands on a pyramid shaped hill. It was previously known as Devgiri. Bhillama, the king of the Yadav dynasty built it in the 12th century. It was Mohammed Bin Tughlaq who gave the name Daulatabad which means city of fortune.

The fort of the city is built on top of a high hill. It is surrounded by thick walls and has transfixed gates. Steep slip ways and a deep ditch can also be seen. Curled network of secret, teasing and underground transitions can also be seen in the fort.

Aurangabad Caves:

Caves were excavated from the soft rock during the 6th and 7th century. These caves, ten in number, are divided into two separate locations - Western  Group Caves having caves 1-5 and Eastern Group Caves having caves 6-10, located 1 km apart. The designing and image is molded by Tantric Hinduism.

Cave 4 from Western Group group is the oldest cave. The remaining four Western caves are viharas depicting an early type of Buddhist monastery. Cave 6 which belongs to the Eastern Group has a large statute of Buddha supported with a form of Ganesh and Cave 7 has forms of women which are barely clad and bejeweled.

Bibi Ka Maqbara :

The monument Bibi Ka Maqbara was built in 1679 AD by Aurangzeb’s son. He built it in memory of his mother Rabia. Ata Ullah was the architect and he based the design on the Taj Mahal.

The Ellora Caves :

The Ellora Caves are listed in the world-heritage list. They are located about 30 km from Aurangabad.
The Kailash Temple of the Ellora caves is the most attractive and masterpiece of the creator. The Kailash temple in the Ellora caves is one of the world’s largest and massive sculpture. It was curved out of a rock with the help of 7000 laborers and took nearly 150 years to complete. The shrines are a mix or both Hindu and Jain faiths. Cave number 32 is famous for a glorious Yakshi statue and beautiful ceiling paintings.

The Ajanta Caves :

The Ajanta Caves have 30 rock cut Bhuddhist caves and it is 106 km from Aurangabad. The basic designs of the caves are called ‘Chaitya grihas’ and ‘Viharas’. Five caves are Buddhist cathedrals and the remaining 25 are monasteries.

The Chaityas are large, rectangular chambers separated by rows of pillars. They are decorated by sculptures and murals which depict the many incarnations of Buddha. The Vhharas are rectangular shaped halls. They have series of small cells which are attached on both sides. Opposite to the entrance is an image of Buddha. The caves also include a visual form of the life of Buddha and interesting stories from Jatakas.

Some information about the area:

The places that will be visiting are:

3. Harnai Beach
4. Kadyawarcha Ganpati
5. Fishing Village @ Harnai
6. Suvarnadurg  Fort
7. Dolphin Safari

Dapoli

Dapoli is 215 km away from Mumbai. It is also called the "Mini Mahabaleshwar" (Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in Maharashtra) because of its cool climate throughout the year. Dapoli is also the city which gave birth to many historic idols including Lokmanya Tilak, Sane Guruji, Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, Wrangler Paranjape, and Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar. It is close to the Arabian Sea (approx 8 km away) and acts as the main town (Taluka Headquarters) for several other small surrounding villages such as Anjarle, Sarang, Bhopan, Harnai, Dabhol, Navse (Bharti Ship Yard), Unhavare, Jaalgaon, Gimhavane, Asud, Vanand, Kherdi, Karde, Murud and Umberghar. Jaalgaon, a village in Dapoli, was awarded the "sant gadgebaba gram swachatta" award for cleanest village by the Maharashtra government. Dapoli is nowadays developing as a tourist destination due its climate, tourist places, beaches, and scenery.Dapoli is separated from the Sayhadri range by the Khed taluka. Dapoli has a seaboard of 50 km which stretches from Burondi, Kelshi to Dabhol. The coastline differs little in its general characteristics from that of other parts of Kokan. It is densely covered by coconut farms. The principal rivers are Bharja in the north and Vashishthi in the south. There is also a small river called Jog which flows through Sarang, Tadil, and into the Arabian sea.Despite being only 7 km away from the coast of Arabian sea, the town is located at an altitude of around 800 feet (240 m).Dapoli was the first Nagar Panchayat in India.

Anjarle Beach

Located on the rugged Konkan coastline, Murud is a small town about 11km from Dapoli. A long, scenic stretch of a beach with swaying palms and a beautiful, ancient Durga Devi temple are its primary attractions. It is also known as Murud - Harnai.
Murud has a lot of beach resorts amidst the coconut plantations. Delicious, fresh seafood includes the likes of Pomfret, Kingfish (Surmai) and Prawns straight from the Arabian Sea. You can also enjoy pure vegetarian, home-made Konkani cuisine at some of the houses nearby. The beach itself with its soft sand and wide expanses is well suited for walking, jogging or simply freaking out. You will probably be able to watch the white bellied sea eagle, white backed vultures and sea gulls. Olive Ridley sea turtles are also spotted here.
Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, who established the first Indian University for women (SNDT), hailed from Murud. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1958. You can also visit the museum which is dedicated to this great man.

Harnai Beach
A very quiet beach, highly attractive for meditation, Harnai beach is renowned as the gateway romantic beach in Harnai. The inflows of the tourists are growing multitudes year by year in this unspoiled beauty of nature.

This beach is famed for its clean softy shores and safe waters for fun filled activities as well as for swimming. The palm trees lined up adds a scenic natural greenish background for the calm beach. It is really an experience spending few hours to few days in the cool ambience of beach. This is a weekend destination to many of the Mumbai and Pune populace to escape from the busy city life.
Anjarle  Kadyawarcha Ganpati
Anjarle is a village in the Dapoli taluka, Ratnagiri district and is known for the Kadyawarcha Ganpati temple (कड्याचा गणपती) which means Ganapati on a cliff. This temple was originally constructed using wooden pillars around 1150. It was renovated between 1768 to 1780. Until the recent construction of bridge across the Anjarle creek and the building of a road up to the temple, pilgrims had to cross Anjarle creek (Jog River) in a boat, before climbing the hill using steps which pass through Anjarle village.

Fishing Village @ Harnai
Harnai port is the main fishing village. Every evening hundreds of fishing boats come back after fishing and gather to auction their catch. The fish auction is the essential trade step between fish landings and the trade. Business worth lakhs of rupees is carried out daily between 4 pm to 7 pm. Witnessing the fish auctions here is a awe inspiring experience and you could also hitch a ride in a bullock cart here!!
Harnai port should be one of the essential part of any Dapoli vacation not just for the auctions. You could vist the Kanakdurg fort with a lighthouse offering splendid views of the ocean Suvarnadurg fort and the fishing village. You can also visit the historic Suvarnadurg fort from here and enjoy a boat ride too!

Suvarnadurg FortSuvarnadurg Fort, also known as Harnai Bunder, lies off the beautiful Harnai coast. It is a small sea port built by great emperor Shivaji to effectively counter the attacks by Sindhis. Of late the fort had been converted to a ship building port in Maharashtra.
The Fort was exceptional in its appearance; most of the parts are in ruins. It brings the remembrance of the construction abilities of Maratha architects. It is a fort visited by many tourists, especially those who are fond of architecture, history and archeology.

Grade: Easy
BaseVillage:Sonori / Jejuri / Narayanpur
Location: Pune region

Malhargad : Malhargad is a hill fort situated around 30 km from Pune. Malhargad is also known as Sonori fort because of the village Sonori situated at its base. It was the last fort built by the Marathas, Sardar Paanse. Hence it is also known as Tarun Killa. Tarun in Marathi means young and Killa means fort. The fort is believed to be built to keep watch on ‘Dive’ ghat along the Pune-Saswad route. The fort was built during the period of 1757 to 1760.

Jejuri:
Jejuri is one of the famous temples in Maharashtra. Popularly known as ' Khandobachi Jejuri ' - it is one of the major Gods in Maharashtra. The God of Jejuri - Mhalsakant or Malhari Martand - is popular amongst the Dhangars. As the temple is on the hill, one has to climb almost 200 steps. But the climbing is not so tough and the wonderful view of Jejuri town is marvelous.

PURANDAR:
The fort, being quite a huge one was a good place for defense. It had the capacity to house many soldier-troops, foods grains and ammunition which proved sufficient for long durations during wartime. Nonetheless, the fort hosts strong fortified places from which a watchful eye can be kept over surrounding area. The history of the Purandar fort goes back to the 13th century. The Bahamani Sultans in the 14th century built here some walls and bastions. From 1484 AD, for about a hundred years, the fort remained in the hands of the Nizamshahi rulers. In 1596 AD, the fort was given as Jagir to Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Shivaji. However, Shivaji had to struggle very hard to establish his control over the fort in 1646 AD. In 1665 AD, Purandar was besieged by the mighty Mughal forces under the command of Jai Singh and Dilir Khan. In the ensuing battle Murar Baji Prabhu, the gallant commander of the fort, was killed. Shivaji, under a treaty, had to surrender to the Mughals his 23 forts, including Purandar and Vajragarh. At the lower fort a statue of Murar Baji Prabhu has been installed in his memory. Purandar was recaptured by Shivaji in 1670 AD Later it became a favourite retreat of the Peshwas. Purandar was captured by the British in 1818 AD. During the Second World War, the British kept here the German war prisoners. Dr. H. Goetz, one of the German prisoners, thoroughly studied Purandarand wrote a monograph on it. Maharaj’s son, Sambhaji, was born on Vaishakh Shudhha 12, Shake’ 1579, ie., 16th May 1657, Thursday on this fort.

Gorakhgad is a fort that can be done easily in a day, both from Mumbai and Pune. Though not famous for any historical events, Gorakhgad attracts trekkers due to its inviting pinnacles, which offer good opportunities for rock-climbing. This region of Gorakhgad and Machchindragad has a dense forest cover.

Fort Gorakhgad is quite small in size. It was having strategic importance during the reign of Shahaji Raje. However, no major battle is recorded to have taken place here. It was used in Shivaji's era to patrol the nearby region and was used as a stopover station during the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Though small in size, there is enough availability water and a lot of space for accommodation. The fort gets its name from Saint Gorakhnath, who performed his "Sadhana" in this place.

( Above M.S.L. )Type: HillGrade: Medium Base Village : RatanwadiDistrict: Ahmednagar As the name speaks, Ratanad is described as "Jewel Fort of Sahayadri". It gets the name as it is origin for the river "Amrutvahini". Located in the district of Ahmednagar, it stands tall to 4255 feet above mean sea level. The fort is about 2000 years old and is situated at banks of Bhandardara lake. The main attraction of this fort is "Amurteshwar" temple which falls into "Hemadpant Era" ( way back to eighth century ). It truly defines the ancient sculpture of our great ancestors due to it's carving.   Ratangad is a natural rock peak with a cavity at top that measure 10 feet high and 60 feets wide, thus forming a needle eye sort of appearance called as "Nedhe". This is caused due to Wind Erosion and one can experience the nature's power over there.     It has a water cistern which is usually filled with water throughout the year and was one of the largest rainwater catchment area for its time.     Fort has a main entrance called as "Tryambak Darwaza." Also we have some remains of smaller entrance to the fort called as "Chor Darwaza". Two ladders have been added to provide easy access to the main fort area. Journey Details: - .. Read more

Dear All,

We शिखरवेध has arranged much awaited Rajgad to Torna Trek on 8-9 November 2014

Cost of the event:: Rs 2000/- per head
Dadar 2 Dadar by private vehicle, All FOOD & Tented Accommodation
.
Brief Introduction about Rajgad / Torna:-

Height:  4182 ft / 4200 ft
Grade:  Medium/Medium
Time: ~ Maximum 2 / 3 hrs from base villages Gunjavane / Velhe
Location: Pune

RAJGAD
The name describes the place itself. The King of all the forts.
It is to the south-west 40 Kms from Pune. It boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji on any fort. He spent almost 25/30 yrs here. Rajgad is famous for its construction. The fort can be divided into four different parts based on geographical terrain and fortification. These are the three sub-plateaux (Machee) namely Padmavati Machee, Suvela Machee and Sanjevani Machee, and at the centre is the Ballekilla.

Padmavati Machee (north end) : This machee is the site of Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake, Chor Darwaja, Pali Darwaja, Gunjavane Darwaja, Daru Kothar (storage of arms and ammunition), Diwankhana, Rajwada (ruins), Ghod Tale (Horse Lake), Sadar (office) and Dhalkathi (flag hoisting place).

Sanjeevani Machee (southwest/west end) : This huge, beautiful and royally constructed machee faces west and has a three-stepped (layered) fortified structure. Each of the lower levels is separated from the higher one by a fortified bastion with a gate that could be defended independently. The lowest level is beautifully fortified by double curtain walls (chilkhathi) separated by a deep trench, on average 12 feet across. One can walk between these walls. The outer wall has openings to let soldiers out for sudden attack.

Suvela Machee (south east) : This is another grand machee facing east with lots of secret routes and doorways. This one is a double-stepped fortified machee with the steps separated by a beautiful bastioned doorway. At the end of first step a hole cuts across the rock; one can sit in this hole (nedhe). The final (lowest) step like Sanjeevani Machee has a double curtain wall. To the south side of this machee one can see a beautiful triangular bastion called Kaleswari buruz having an escape door near it. The home of the renowned military leader Tanaji Malusare was in this machee.

Bale Killa (centre) : This is the highest part of the fort which has remains of palaces, water cisterns and caves. It has a beautiful entrance door called Mahadarwaja. One can view the whole fort and the vast surrounding expanse.

TORNA
:- The fort is also known as Prachandagad (huge fort), due to its massive size. In 1646, when Shivaji was 16, he launched his first military attack by capturing Torna fort, paving the way for the great empire. Many battles have been fought on this fort. The fort is truly grand and stretches for couple of kilometers.

Fascinating points on Torna fort:

Goddess Toranjai:
it is a simple temple where goddesses Somjai and Toranjai are worshiped. Ahead we can see the lakes toran and mhasoba.

Maal and Safeli Bastions: On the west of Kothji Darwaja are the bastion maal, and the latter one is to the south of the former. Near Safeli is the construction called lakadkhaana, where wood was stored. Here is the way to Kokan Darwaja and Budhla Machi.

Budhla Machi: In Marathi ‘budhla’ means vessel, and budhla machi looks like a vessel kept upside down. This cliff is a breathtaking spot on the fort.

Bini Darwaja: This is the main entrance to the fort from velhe and is situated to the northwest of the fort. The bastion on the left side has collapsed. The path ahead leadsto the Kothi Darwaja.

Kothi Darwaja: Ascending the steps carved in the rock, we enter the Kothi Darwaja facing east. Here we come across some guard rooms. Way along the wall towards east takes us to the temple of goddess Toranjai.

Hanuman Bastion: This bastion is situated to the east of Kothi Darwaja. Here we can see the idol of hanuman facing south and a flag post. The way ahead leads to the bastion Bhel. Further eastwards we come to Zunjar Machi.

Templeof goddess Mengai: this is the only place on the fort where one can stay. It has two doors and the roof is stillin the needs of repairs. In front of the temple is a Deepmala.

Zunjar Machi: It is situated on the western side & a wonderful spot to see.

Details as below:
Vijaydurg or Victory Fort:

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria" as it is situated in the village "Girye". Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.
Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.
Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan

Sindhudurga - Padmagad forts:
Huge sea rocks of Malvan has easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory. The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 shivaji erected this fort on 44 acers of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is 'Shri Shivarajeshwar temple' of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess 'Bhavani Temple'. Impressions of shivaji's fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall . Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

Tarkarli Beach

Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

Snorkeling:

is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins.  Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort.Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipmentInline image 3

Breakfree Journeys goes backpacking to Gokarna! October 17

The many faces of Gokarna is what makes this quite coastal town so interesting. It is home to Sanskrit schools and to beach shacks, it is where lies the Atma Lingam – Shiva’s most potent weapon and a beach shaped like Om. On one side you have saffron clad priests walking briskly and on the other, fellows sporting dreadlocks and a Ganesha tee walking behind them. The smell of incense is persistent near the temple while acrid smell of weed is prominent near the beaches. Where cattle and women in bikinis lounge together by the sea. It’s a town full of contrasts, just like the country that we call home. Our journey begins on the night of 16th aboard the Mangalore Express which will drop us off at Karwar. From there, we will change two buses to reach the town of Gokarna. Over the next three days, we will explore the 5 beaches of Gokarna, go for early morning and evening dips in the Arabian sea, trek up to the last frontier – Paradise beach or take a boat ride along the coast. Hitch a ride to Mirjan Fort and watch the sunset over the Arabian and enjoy local delicacies, especially sea food. Accommodation will be basic in a clean property close to the beach and all internal transport will be in shared autos and local buses. The idea is to experience the town like the local and cut out the touristy bits.
Total cost: Rs. 4700 inclusive of basic accommodation in a clean property close to the beach and all internal transport will be in autos and local buses.
Booking amount: Rs. 2500.
If you’d like us to book your train tickets then do let us know. (SL class ticket approximately: Rs. 1200 for return)

A town steeped in history, myth and culture. A town that promises to be not just a destination but an experience. A town that features on the global travellers’ map and recognised as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. A town that introduces us to the glorious past of our country. A town where sloth bears amble about and birds fly uninhibited. A town that allows you to be yourself. And this October, we invite you to backpack with us to Hampi.

Our journey begins on the evening of Wednesday, 22nd Oct on a bus headed to Hospet. Beginning next morning until Sunday evening, we spend our time soaking in the sights, sounds, smells and the adventure of this town of the ruins. On foot, on cycle, in autorickshaws. Go swimming in a reservoir close by, try our hands at Bouldering on the rocks nearby.

Climb to the highest hills, sit on the rocks, meditate, contemplate and wander about in search of nothing in particular. At nights, look up and gaze at the milky way watching shooting stars fly across. Photograph the temples, the queen’s bath, elephant stables and the erstwhile market areas where horses and weapons were sold.

Watch the stories from the Ramayana come alive as we amble about sites, the names of which are etched in our memories – thanks to Uncle Pai and Ramanand Sagar. Wait for the sloth bears come out and play about in the sanctuary nearby. But moreover spend time getting to know yourself, better. So if you are the type that likes to experience a place, not just see it, then we invite you to come along on this trip.
