General information:
Alang-Madan are mighty forts in Nashik and are part of Kalsubai range. Dense forest, rocky patches and one of the biggest traverse in Sahyadri makes this trek more thrilling and challenging. On top of Alang fort there is huge plateau. There are two caves on the fort and 11 water cisterns. One can get fantastic glimpse of Sahyadri from Alang fort. If you look at east you will find Kalasubai, Aundh Fort, Patta, Bitangad. On the north side - Harihar, Trymbakgad, Anjaneri. On the south side - Harishchandragad, Aajobagad, Khutta (pinnacle), Ratangad, Katrabai can be located.
Madan has got a beautiful set of steps for ascending to top. At some places route is little broken which makes ascending the fort difficult. We have to climb around 40 ft rock patch and negotiate traverse with deadly exposure. The view of the horseshoe shaped Alang from Madan is a beautiful sight.

About the Place :
| Type : Hill Fort | Height : 4606 ft | Grade : Medium|
Whenever Maratha history is recalled it is always the fort of Torna that is commemorated for being one of those forts captured by Shivaji Maharaj in his teenage. It has been rightly said by James Douglas "It was Shivaji's first conquest, the nucleus around which all the others clustered, making it virtually the cradle of the Marathi Empire, which shocked the throne of the great Moguls. It has been the scene of many bloody battles. If Sinhagad is Lion's does then Torna is Eagle's nest."
On the fort are found many trees of the type “Toran”, which may be the reason for the name of the fort. The fort is located in Pune district, 18.36 degrees Latitude & 73.37 degrees Longitude. The village at the base of the fort is called “Velhe”. To the south of Torna is the river of Velvandi & to the north is the Valley of Kanad River.

About:
It is said that Kalsubai name is taken from a Koli girl named Kalsu.' Kalsu, according to the story, was fond of wandering in the forest. One day she came to Indor at the foot of the hill now called Kalsubai, and took service with a Koli family on condition that she should not be asked to clean pots or to sweep. Matters went smoothly till, one day, one of the families ordered Kalsu to clean some pots and clear away some Utter. She did as she was bid, bat, immediately after, climbed the hill and stayed on its top till her death. Where she cleaned the pots is known as Thale Mel, and where she cleared away the litter as Kaldara. The hill is a natural stronghold about ten miles south-east of Igatpuri, the nearest railway station. Its top is a cone with room only for a small shrine and a trigonometrically survey cairn. There is a large lower shoulder without remains of buildings, and the absence of water cisterns shows that the hill was never used as a fort.

This is about some serious adventure, and here is the amazing platter set for you... Get set for the most thrilling 1800 ft rappelling of your life !!!
AQUARIUS PEAK ADVENTURE brings for you this season an Extreme Adventure (January 2014).

Some details about Harishchandragad and Konkan kada:

Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar region of India. Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, and it has played a major role in guarding the surrounding region. The height of the fort is 4671 ft MSL.
The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan. From here, one can have a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and the setting sun. This cliff is not just vertical, but it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.
The Konkankada, a unique formation in the Sahyadris, is really tough and a challenge for the trekkers. This is a semicircular cliff of about 2,000 ft straight drop + 1000 ft slant fall in the Konkan plains. The surrounding grandeur and beauty of the plains and the mountains leaves us totally spellbound. It is one of the highest direct fall cliffs to be found in Maharashtra and Western Ghats.
This is a combination of thrill and bliss that every true adventurer would say ‘YES!!!’ to… Rappelling, also known as abseiling is an act of descending a mountain face by sliding down a rope, which is attached to a body harness and fastened to an overhead projection, with sufficient friction provided as to make the speed of the descend controllable.

Detail of the Rappelling:

To rappel the Konkankada atleast once in a life time is a dream of almost every adventure freak in Sahyadris. It is the most thrilling and spellbound activity offered in the Sahyadris range. Rappelling will be conducted in 4 stages to complete 1800ft.

The 11th Girivihar Bouldering Competition 2014

The first two days of Girivihar Competition were of great fun, with a dash of amazing international performances.  This is the second year that The Masters Challenge was incorporated in the Competitions. The idea was, to put on display, the best of Climbing talent, by making National Champions compete with each other.
We had glorious names with great achievements participating here. For e.g. : Tuhin who had climbed 8B plus the Ganesh Route… or Sandeep Maity who has climbed 8A in the past at places like Hampi and Badami in India… or someone like Adriel Choo from Singapore who has been participating in World Championships, etc

Mens Semifinal
Mens Semi final was a great spectacle. It was a very close affair, with every one vying to qualify for the finals. 6 people qualified for Mens Finals. Adriel for the second time in row was determined to win.

Womens Semifinal
Routes were good. 2 Singapore girls topped all the route, Neha Prakash topped 3 routes. Routes were relatively easy for Singaporean Climbers but not so easy for the Indians climbers
Out of 13, 6 people qualified for the finals

Iranian and Singapore Climbers were very happy to be here with such tough routes set up at the competition.

About Route Setting :
Girivihar this year has been sponsored by EP for the 'holds', mainly features (they are the huge holds with multiple grip opportunities, it also adds character to the wall). Using such fancy features this year, the wall was truly an international climbing site. Vaibhav Mehta who flies down to India every year from France to be the Chief Route Setter, had put in a serious thought laying the routes for this competition. Especially with the Masters Challenge incorporated in the competition this year, the routes had to set, tougher, better, and more technical and to stay at par with the international standards.

Girivihar, though a totally routed competition in Indian Climbing scene, makes sure that the entire organization is held upto IFSC prescribed standards in all means.

All this contributed to a spectacular climbing demonstration in the Finals.

Adrenaline Rush = Mens finale. A highly thrilling affair, with all the usual suspects Sandeep Maity, Adriel Choo, Tuhin Satarkar, Aziz shaikh vying for a podium finish. A surprise entry to the finals this year was Michael Schreiber a German climber. He surprised everyone with his feat by finishing 3rd.

First route of the finals proved to be a little difficult with people taking more attempts than the others. Adriel flashed rest of all the 3 routes except the first and emerged a winner.

Womens finals was a relatively an easy affair so to say. Singapore Climbers were a class apart. This may be such an alarm bell for the Indian Women Climbers.

Ankai

Ankai-Tankai is a twin fort located in Nasik-Manmad region and just 8km away from Manmad.

A flight of steps lead to ancient Buddhist caves situated at the base of the Tankai fort. Beautiful sculptures on the wall, carving on pillars and roof, a duplex cave with gallery, a temple in the cave is worth looking and a boon for photography enthusiasts. Regular steps leads to a number of fortified entrances, caves with some sculptures and finally to the top where a domed building is located.

On the top one can see 5 caves, 7 water tanks, an arched enclosure at the end of the fort with a huge pond, Dargah etc. A huge cave below the summit is now an Ashram or a temple of Agatsya, the sage who is credited with the first crossing of Vindhya Mountains. The Fortification walls and entrance are still in a good condition.

From the top, one can have a beautiful view of surroundings, a pinnacle called Hadbi chi shendi, Gorakshnath, Tankai Fort and Chandvad range if weather is clear.

There is a history behind the Jama Masjid built in Burhanpur. During 1421,when most of the population of Burhanpur lived to the north, Begum Ruquiyawife of king Azam Humayum built the first Jama Masjid inItwara Burhanpur also called as Bibi Ki masjid. But soon with the growth of the city, ruler Adil Shah Farooqi built a bigger Jama Masjid in the centreof the town, easily accessible to all the people living in Burhanpur. The construction of the Jama Masjid was started in 1590 and completed in 5 years. Burhanpur Jama Masjid is similar to the Jama Masjid in Delhi. Two identical minars (tower) of the mosque are quite a feature. At about 130 feet tall they loom all over the mosque. You can climb up right to the top by the spiral stairways. These minars are believed to be much taller than those of the Jama Masjid in Delhi.Mosque is 149 foot tall and 52 feet wide. So naturally, about 70 pillars support it. The huge hall of the mosque can hold as many as 500 people easily.

It is 259 Meters high from the base & 701 Meters above sea level. This is referred as the "Gateway to southern India" in the medieval history. It is consisting of three separate lines of constructions namely Asirgarh proper(Upper most part), Kamargarh andMalaygarhJami masjid & a Shiva temple are another architecture inside the fort. Asha devi mandir of Hindu Goddess Asha-devi is located on the hills of this village. In the vicinity of Asirgarh, there is a tomb of Shah Nomani Asiri, a saint, a believer of Sufism.Moti mahal, the burial place of Moti Begam, beloved of Shah Jahan is to the left of the fort and situated at the bank of Pandhar River.(* click on pi to enlarge)
Khundi Bhandara :

Mughal rulers had constructed 8 system of water works with a vision of supplying pure water to the city. This natural system had supplied water to Burhanpur city. These water works are specimen of unparalleled construction technique and may be counted as glorious relics of theMughal engineering ingenuity and skill which entailed enormous expenditure. This was constructed in the reign of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.
Shahi Qila :

Shahi Qila standing on the banks of river Tapti is a remarkable structure. The six storeyed structure rises over 175 feet from the river beds and housed over 4,00,000 soldiers. The palaces Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas were built on the terrace of the structure. The Raj Ghat was used as a base for the boats used by the members of the royal family.Shahi (Royal) Hammam : The Royal Hamam is situated in the Faruqui fort. It was constructed by Shah-Jahan, The Mughal Emperor. In the middle of the monument there is a octagonal bath-place. The bath-place was connected with the water system of Khuni Bhandara. Colorful Mughal Paintings can be seen on the ceiling of the monument.Motil Mahal : Moti mahal, the burial place of Moti Begam, beloved of Shah gJahan is to the left of the fort and situated at the bank of Pandhar River.

Iccha Devi Temple :  Ichha Devi Temple is situated at Ichha village. It is located 23 Kms from Burhanpur on Burhanpur-Edlabadmain road and dedicated to the Ichha Devi.Maratha Governor made a vow to the Goddess Ichha Devi (Ful-filler of desires) that if he got a son he would build a well and a temple for the Goddess. He built a well and a temple when his desires were fulfilled. An annual fair held in Chaitra Maas (First month of Hindu Calendar) is attended by thousands of pilgrims.

TMI: Tour to Goa Wildlife Sanctuaries on 18th Friday to 20th Sunday April, 2014

$

Hey Mates, Get ready for 3days Tour to Goa Wildlife Sanctuaries on 18th Friday to 20th Sunday April, 2014 (Leaving on 17th Thursday Night)

The Places we are visiting:

1   Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary And Mollem National Park
    2   Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary
    3   Miramar Beach
    4   Calangute Beach

The West Coast Tropical Evergreen Forests and Moist Deciduous Forests of Goa have a lot to offer us.  The forest canopy is almost closed and the availability of grass is very limited. There are several perennial water sources in the state’s jungles resulting into good factor for wildlife.

Wild mammals recorded in the sanctuary include: black panther, barking deer, bengal tiger, Leopard, bonnet macaque, common langur, civet, flying squirrel, gaur, malabar giant squirrel, mouse deer, pangolin, porcupine, slender loris, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar and wild dog.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park is a 240 square kilometres (93 sq mi) protected arealocated in the Western Ghats of South India, in Sanguem taluk, Goa along the eastern border with Karnataka. The area is situated near the town of Molem, 57 kilometres (35 mi) east of Panaji, the state capital of Goa. National Highway 4Adivides it into two parts and the Mormugao - Londa railway line passes through the area. It is located between 15°15"30' to 15°29"30' N and 74°10"15' to 74°20"15' E.[1] It contains several important temples dating to the Kadamba Dynasty, and Dudhsagar Falls. The parkland is also home to a community of nomadic buffalo herders known as the Dhangar.
This area was first known as Mollem Game Sanctuary. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and renamed as Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary. The core area of the sanctuary covering 107 square kilometres (41 sq mi) was notified as Mollem National Park in 1978.,[2][3]

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Northeastern Goa, India in the Ponda taluka of the state. The total area of the park is 8 km2. It is a popular destination for both tourists and schoolchildren. A wide variety of animal life can be encountered, including: Sambar Deer, Indian Bison, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Indian Peafowl and many species of snake.[1]
Bondla provides sanctuary to leopards who have been injured when they ventured too close to human habitation, and dancing bears and cobras who, along with their trainers, need a new life as the age-old tradition of dancing bears and snake charming is now illegal. The elephants and their handlers are more fortunate: the two at Bondla take turns to give visitors a ride, and on their off day are bathed and laze around.

Another surprise at Bondla are the Hindu carvings. These were discovered when the sanctuary gardens were being constructed. They would have been hidden for protection from the Portuguese Catholic Inquisitors.
