About Fireflies -

Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are not actually members of the fly family. They are actually beetles, and only have the ability to fly during their very short adult phase. As a general rule, genuine members of the fly family have two-part names, while other flying insects have one-word names. House flies and tse-tse flies are indeed flies, while fireflies and dragonflies are not. It's a distinction only an entomologist could love.

These bugs begin their life cycles as fertilized eggs implanted into damp soil. After three weeks, immature larvae emerge and essentially become eating machines. Young fireflies capture small prey, such as snails, worms, and mites, and inject them with a powerful acidic juice, much like spiders.

The immature larvae will then suck out the dissolved body tissue. They remain in this immature larval stage for one or two years, building up "mud houses" to protect themselves as they grow into pupa and eventually into the adult lightning bugs we see during summer months.

Adult fireflies emerge from the pupa stage fully formed. For the next three weeks or so, their only missions are to eat, sleep, and make more fireflies. To accomplish their mating mission, they are equipped with special chemicals which create a cold light, known as bioluminescence.

About Rajmachi -
Rajmachi consists of two citadels(Balekilla)

1) Shrivardhan - Srivardhan Fort peaked at a height of 3000 ft., lies to the east of Rajmachi fort. The hilly terrains of Rajmachi provide considerable trekking thrill. The architectural style of construction is typical of Maratha period and is characterized by strong walls, semi-circular entrances and cisterns. Two large tanks were used as the chief sources of water supply in the fort. The temple of Bhairavnath is located inside and is an added attraction. Panoramic views of surrounding hills, greenery and forts of Lohagad, Tungi, Korigarh and Visapur can be obtained from here.

2) Manranjan - The Manoranjan fort probably belongs to the Yadav period and is one of the two forts adjacent to the Rajmachi fort. Uniquely, this place is characterized by the presence of a square shaped lake divided by a straight rock

Kondana Caves is an enormous rock-cut Budhist cave. The Chaitya of the cave retains its wooden enterior and in the monsoon with the overhead water gushing down over the opening of the cave in a powerful waterfall – it’s a sight to behold.

One might even see the caves, old temples and monuments on the way to the top which is another 40 minutes from the village Rajmachi. One can even observe the wonderful reflection of Rajmachi(Shrivardhan) in the pond in the Rajmachi village.

Also try to see the Kondane Caves which are about one hour distant from Kondivde and away from the main path to Rajmachi.

Here is a link to a document by Mr. Mukund Gondhalekar that gives more information about this historic fort and the activities carried out by Rajmachi Rural Aid and Development Programme for its conservation and development.
