Tattva's Fireflies Lake side camping at Bhandardara Ghatghar on 4th & 5th June 2015

Posted: 10 May 2016 10:36 PM PDT

Tattva Adventures invites you fireflies camping near by Femous Sandhan Valley's base village 'Samrad' (Ghatghar lake side camp) on 4th & 5th June 2016   About Camping at Samrad: Camping at Samrad! It's true what they say about Sandhan, you can't get enough of the place. Also known as The Valley Of Shadows, it is a beautiful valley situated in the Western Ghats. Located near beautiful Bhandardara region, it is also surrounded by Alang, Madan, Kulang, Kalsubai, Ratangad and Ajoba forts.   About Fireflies :   1. Have you ever touched a light bulb that's been on for a while? If you did, you probably burned your finger! An average electric light bulb gives off 90% of its energy as heat, and only 10% as light. If fireflies produced that much heat when they lit up, they'd probably incinerate themselves. Fireflies produce light through an efficient chemical reaction that allows them to glow without wasting heat energy. All 100% of the energy goes into making light.   2. Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are neither flies nor bugs.Fireflies are actually beetles. Like all other beetles, they have hardened forewings called elytra, which meet in a straight line down the back when at rest.   3. Fireflies don't put on those spectacular summer displays just to entertain us. You're actually eavesdropping on the firefly singles bar. Male fireflies cruising for mates flash a species-specific pattern to announce their availability to receptive females. An interested female will reply, helping the male locate her where she's perched, often on low vegetation.   4. The well-known femme fatales in the genus Photuris use a trick called aggressive mimicry to make meals of other fireflies. When a male firefly of another genus flashes its light signal, the female Photuris firefly replies with the male's flash pattern, suggesting she is a receptive mate of his own species. She continues luring him in, closer and closer, until he's within her reach.... Read more

The name is given because this path was used as a tollbooth to collect toll from traders crossing the hills. This sheer cliff is a well know landmark, very clearly visible from Konkan region as you pass on your way from Kalyan towards Malshej. The walls of this pass come out from the main range and hence command a magnificent view of the great bend in the Sahayadri. This is a pass, which once in history, enjoyed prime importance. The inscriptions, the steps, the rock-cut rest houses, and the cisterns all point out the historic fact that this route was frequently used as far back as the 1st century B.C. The Dark Forest - Andharban Trek 18th September 2016 with Mapping Journeys!

Posted: 10 May 2016 07:24 AM PDT

Team Mapping Journeys!   Andharban Trek! Andhar means Darkness and Ban stands for dense jungle, so the word Andharban literally means The Dense Dark Forest. The intimidating factor of this 13km long trek has to be the hardcore jungle cover over your head. A major portion of this trek route involves walking through this denseness. The start point of this trek ie Pimpri dam begins in bright daylight which keeps on fluctuating as we keep entering the dense part of the forest and out, this only adds up to the magic that this place has to offer.  With the onset of monsoons, this trail becomes a denser and greener, with waterfalls all along. Best suited during monsoons and winters, this trek can also be done in summer. The trek concludes at yet another dam called the Bhira dam which is also the source of the Kundalika river which is famous for its White Water Rafting. 30% of the trek is all descend and remaining is normal walking. While on the route we can see the beauty of places like Ghangad, Tailbaila, Sarasgad, Plus valley, Tamhini ghat, Kundalika valley. If time permits after the trek we will be also visiting the famous ganesh temple at pali.   Andharban Trek! Looking at the well-dug cisterns, the fort can be said to be belonging to Bhoj-period. However, no such evidences are available. What is known about this fort is that Kohoj was under Portuguese colonies in 16th century. They fortified it and later Peshwas conquered this fort in 1737. The hike to the top is a freshening experience. The route till the top is an amazing experience with ponds and lush greenery all around. Kohoj is located about 104 km from Mumbai off the Mumbai - Ahmedabad Highway. The fort is said to be about 800 years old and finds a mention in the Purandar treaty along with 22 other forts which were surrendered by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the Mughals on 11 June 1665. Kohoj has a moderately difficult gradient and it takes about two and a half hours to reach the main plateau from Vaghote village which is situated a the base of the fort.
