WSR Trek to Dark Forest – Andharban on 24th January 2016 About the Tour: "Andharban", the word itself means dense dark forest. Andharban is one of the most beautiful trek in Sahyadris. The best time to visit this place is during monsoon or post monsoon. In this trek, you descend for almost 4 hours and you are covered with dense forest and shade. Ratangad also has a natural orifice (nedhe). It is also possible to go an sit in this nedhe . Climbing down the nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle and Trimbak darwaja.  Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left, one can see Rani mahal here. From the southern side one can see Katrabai and Ajoba fort very close. Region: Lonavla. Height: 3400 ft Grade: Easy. Type: Hill Fort Trek Lead: Mahadeo   About : Visapur: The companion fort to Lohagad, Visapur also served as a lookout point for the trade route passing through Lonavala.The fort of Visapur is much more expansive and has a still standing fortification on the top. The door and steps leading to the top of the fort are worth a look.   Bhaja Caves: The buddhist excavations at Bhaja, also known as Bhaja caves, date almost to the 1st century AD and are believed to be one of the oldest buddhist religious centres in this area. it is also a big tourist draw as it is near Lonavala, but thankfully, because of its classification as a national monument, it is relatively well maintained compared to many other tourist attractions here.   The journey starts with the Indrayani express. People interested should catch this train from respective stations with ticket till Malavli & meet at lonavala station. Cost excludes: *Lunch. *Any other cost not mentioned in inclusions. About the trek: This fort is believed to be built by Shilahar kings and subsequently used by the Nizam of Ahmednagar. The great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji is also believed to have reconstructed this fort. The work was carried out in a hurry and hence the name. Avchit means hurry and gad means fort. In the Third Anglo-Maratha War, this fort was won over by Colonel Prother from the Peshwas in the year 1818 along with other forts in the neighbouring region. The approximate height of this fort is 977 feet[1] It is a fairly easy trek through the jungle up to the fort which takes about an hour to climb. From atop the fort one can have a beautiful view of the neighbouring forts of Telbaila, Sarasgad, Dhangad, Sudhagad, Raigad and Savashnagad. The fort has a large dodecagonal-shaped cistern which was used mainly for bathing and washing purposes. Nearby this cistern there are 6 smaller cisterns which have potable water. A small temple of the Pingalsai goddess is also situated atop. There is a dense forest around the entire fort with leopards, monkeys and foxes. It is situated on northeast side of Panvel, on Mumbai-Pune road, at a distance of 3-4 km on west side of Neral. This is a one-day trek and also one of the most enchanting trek in Monsoon. It is also known as Vikatgad. The forts and hills in and around Peb Fort are Nakhind, Chanderi, Mahasmal. Prabalgad is another fort opposite this small fort. Peb fort overlooks the Konkan region and also is approachable from Pune. So Chatrapati Shivaji must have given a thought before building this strategic fort. The fort is at a height of 2100 feet above mean sea level. This fort is visible from the edge of Panorama Point at Matheran or from Matheran Toy Train after you cross the One Kiss Tunnel.
