Posted: 14 Aug 2015 11:41 AM PDT Imagine walking over frozen river with a large pack on your back and very cold water rushing a few inches below your feet! DarkGreen Adventures invites you for a trek which exists in the bucket list of all trekkers. The Chadar trek is a route which connects villages in the Zanskar valley to the road to Leh along the frozen Zanskar River. This route has been used for centuries and is most reliable in February. Unfortunately, this route will cease to exist after few years. The 'Chadar' is a perfect example of the resourcefulness of the Ladakhis and their indomitable spirit against such daunting odds. The landscape acquires a pristine grandeur in winter as the trail enters into the gorge of the Zanskar where temperatures sometimes drop to –30 degree Celsius. You will be dropped by a vehicle at Chilling. The trek passes through a narrow valley filled with breath-taking views of ice-peaks and unexpected hanging icicles. You will spend the night at cave camps with the help of a born fire. Brief itinerary 7th Feb, Sunday - Fly to Leh 3500m Flying over miles and miles of heavily snowed mountains will tell you just why it's impossible to reach Ladakh by road in the winters. The moment you land at the Leh airport, you will feel the fresh and crisp air and a drastic drop in the temperature. 8th Feb, Monday - Drive to Tlad Do via Chilling Enjoy the sunrise from the Shanti Stupa and a panoramic view of the entire town of Leh and the peak of Stok Kangri. Later, a roller-coaster ride will take you to Chilling along the Indus. On the way we see the breathtaking confluence of Zanskar and Indus near the village of Nimu. To reach the camp-site, you have to cross the frozen Zanskar; and this is when you take your first steps on the Chadar. 9th Feb, Tuesday - Tilad Do to Gyalpo The biggest challenge of all the remaining days is to get out of the warm sleeping bags into the super cold atmosphere outside with some motivation from steaming cups of tea. Today, you will be walkin... Read more |
