OUR NEXT TREK: Two Days Monsoon Trek to Rajmachi & Kondhane caves on 25th-26th July 2015.   Hello Buddies, Please read the trek plan thoroughly and carry all the necessary items mentioned below.   Some info about the Mountain: Rajmachi (826m/2710ft) is a tribal village located in the Sahyadri Mountains between Karjat and Lonavala. It is popular for its twin forts, ancient Shiva temple and a pond. The surrounding hills are adorned with several beautiful waterfalls in the monsoon season. The famous Kondhane caves situated at the foot of the Mountain are also worth a visit. Historically, Rajmachi fort gained strategic importance as it was used to guard the trade route of Bhor. Apart from the enjoying trekking, fun games, natural beauty and the ancient monuments, you will also meet some humble village folks and enjoy some delicious village food and ambience.   Tentative Trek Plan: Assembly: At Lonavala Railway Station @ 8:00am sharp on 25th July 2015 (Saturday)   (Lonavala can be reached by trains and ST buses from Mumbai. We recommend boarding train number 22105 Indrayani Express. It is advised to book confirmed tickets in advance on your own.)   We won't be waiting for latecomers!   9am: After breakfast, we shall start our trek from Lonavala to Rajmachi which is an easy trek of approx 14kms on flat mountain terrain, but will require good endurance. We aim to reach Udhewadi village by lunchtime. "RAIGAD ADVENTURE CLUB" arrange trek to "HARIHAR" fort trek on saturday 25th july 2015. little info of fort: - Height: 3676 ftRegion: IgatpuriPlace: Harihar fortRegion : NasikGrade: Medium Detail about fort: - Harihar fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village. It is built on a triangular prism of rock. Its three faces and two edges are absolutely vertical (90 degrees). The third edge towards the west is inclined at an angle of 75 degrees. A one metre wide rocky staircase with niches in it is carved out for ascending & descending the fort. There are 117 steps in all. After you climb the first rocky staircase (main entrance) we walk thru below a overhang with a sheer drop. Again one has to climb a set of steep stairs (with niches), then pass thru a staircase inside the rock (like Peth-kothligad fort) and then reach the top of the fort. The view from the top is excellent. After climbing these steps, we get up to the entrance door. The fort has got a tapering plateau with a raised level in the middle. There is a small temple of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva on the plateau. A small pond is there in front of this temple. Water from this pond can be used for drinking. Making headway from here we come across a palace having two rooms in it. 10 to 12 persons can be accommodated in this palace. One of the vertical drops of the fort facing the Nirgudpada village is called 'Scottish kada', perhaps because it was climbed for the first time in November 1986 by Doug Scott, the legendary Himalayan mountaineer & took him two days to do the climb. This cliff is about 170 meters in height. Full Itinerary of trek: - 25th july saturday : - catch 00:10 am CST-Kasara slow local. More Abt RajmachiRajmachi is a small village in the rugged mountains of Sahyadri in India. There are two forts which were built by Shivaji Emperor during 17th century. It is a famous spot for trekking. It is a 20-25 km trekking distance from Lonavla. Rajmachi fort is a strategic fort overlooking Borghat(ghat between Mumbai and Pune) which was a historical trade route. Rajmachi peak has two fortified structures - the Shrivardhan fort and Manaranjan fort. Rajmachi can be reached by 2 ways, the tough route from Kondivide village near Karjat and the other easy but long way route from Lonavala. In rainy season this place is filled with giant waterfalls and greenery. We will be taking the easy route. Shrivardhan and Manaranjan can also be considered as two separate forts. There is one small platue inbetween them. A temple of 'Bhairoba' is very beautiful. Shrivardhan is 'Bale killa' of Rajmachi. It is almost 3000 feet high. But it was mainly built to keep watch on Konkan area. The other - Manoranjan is 2700 feet high. Manaranjan consists of strong walls, 3 doors and many water tanks. One can see Ulhas river, Dukes Nose (Nagphani), Karnala ,Matheran, Mahuli and Bhimashankar etc. The old caves of 'Kondhavi' on Rajmachi fort are worth to see. Sanjay Gandhi National Park Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), previously Borivali National Park, is a large protected area in the northern part of suburban Mumbai city in Maharashtra State in India. It encompasses an area of 104 km2 (40 sq mi) and is surrounded on three sides by India's most populous city. It is notable as one of the major national parks existing within a metropolis limit and is one of the most visited parks in the world. The rich flora and fauna of Sanjay Gandhi National Park attracts more than 2 million visitors every year.   Kanheri Caves The Kanheri Caves constitute a group of rock-cut monuments that are located north of Borivali on the western outskirts of Mumbai, India. Located within the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the caves are 6 km from the main gate and 7 km from Borivali Station. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, which means black mountain. They were chiseled out of a massive basaltic rock outcropping. These caves date from the first century BCE to the 10th century CE. One hundred and nine caves have been carved from the basalt. Unlike the elegant splendor of the adjacent Elephanta Caves, the earlier cells are spartan and unadorned. Each cave has a stone plinth for a bed. A congregation hall with huge stone pillars contains the stupa, a Buddhist shrine. Farther up the hill are canals and cisterns, the remains of an ancient system that channeled rainwater into huge tanks. Once the caves were converted to permanent monasteries, the rock was carved with intricate reliefs of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas. Kanheri had become an important Buddhist settlement on the Konkan coast by the 3rd century CE. Most of the caves are used as the Buddhist viharas, meant for living, studying, and meditating. The larger caves were chaityas, or halls for congregational worship; are lined with intricately carved Buddhist sculptures, reliefs and pillars; and contain rock-cut stupas for congregational worship. The Avalokite... Read more
