At that place two drops of 'Amrut' was dropped and water started flowing out from Ratangad continuously resulting in the river Pravara hence the name 'Amrutvahini' Ratangad a 400 year old fort at a height of 4250ft is, as per folklore also one of the favourite forts of Shivaji Maharaj. Lohagad makes an ideal trekking destination for trekkers from Pune and Mumbai because of its accessibility, ease of the trek and lush green surroundings. Lohagad at 3400 ft is a wide spread fort. There are 4 doors to Lohagad from the nearby village Lohagadwadi. Lohagad divides the basins of the Indrayani and Pavna. The view is stunning with a signature 'vinchu Kata' (Scorpio Tail) shaped fort Lohagad has a long & stirring history. It was ruled by many dynasties right from Satavahans, Chalukyas, Nizamshahi, Mughals to the Great Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in 1648 right after conquering Torna. Netaji Palkar was given the responsibility of looking after the fort. Lakshmi Kothi was used to store the treasure raided from Surat. In the treaty of Purandar 1665, Lohagad was lost to Aurangzeb, under Mirzaraje Jaysingh. Shivaji Maharaj Recaptured this fort in 1670. Information about Karnala fort: Type: Hill Fort Height: 1538 Feet above MSL (Approx) Grade: Easy Situated on Mumbai–Goa National Highway, about 13 kms from Panvel, Karnala Fort can be easily identified from its 'Thums Up' shape pinnacle. The area around Karnala is covered with a thick forest and is declared as a Bird Sanctuary which is home to 150 species of resident birds and 37 species of migratory birds. It takes approximate one hour from base to reach the first entrance of the fort. The fort have very good fortification structure, many remains of settlements, storage buildings and a temple of Shiva and Karnai Mata. Caves and water cisterns are carved in the rock. The pinnacle on the fort is a citadel and to reach the top, one needs to use rock climbing technique.
