Wetlands form an integral part of the ecosystem of our island city. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, these amazing patches of marshy land are home to a wide variety of biodiversity.
Uran, once the base of the famous Maratha naval Admiral – Kanhoji Angre is now a major port town. However, in spite of the developmental pressures exerted on it – it attracts a large migrant avian population from lands far away. On our trail we will visit Panje village, Jasai grasslands and other marshy areas in the vicinity.
Palm Beach Road – the most upmarket residences of Navi Mumbai, is also home to a dense mangrove patch and wetlands such as Talawe where migrants set up base during winter months. Bhandup Pumping station – the underdog of all birding sites has fast become popular among birders not just for its wetland birds but also for scrubland species and raptors that are often sighted here. Also, if one is lucky the sight of the Indian Jackal could make your day!
Interested? Here’s the plan! The Breakfree vehicle will depart from Borivali at 0530 hours and pick up people en route at Goregaon – Andheri – Bandra – Sion – Dadar – Chembur – Vashi – Uran. We will visit Uran first followed by the other two sites.
