About 1600 years ago, the Chalukyas ruled a part of Deccan currently occupied by Maharashtra, Karnataka and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Vatapi or modern day Badami was the capital of the Chalukyas and this is where they left a lasting legacy behind in forms of temples, architecture in a style pioneered by the Chalukyas and other inscriptions.
This November, join us on a 3 day backpacking trip to Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal and Bijapur. The unique rock cut cave - temples at Badami, the older temples at Aihole and Pattadakal are all living testimony to the architectural grandeur, skill and capability of the men and women who built them.
If Badami is about the ancient times, Bijapur speaks about the glory of the medieval times. The Gol Gumbaz that inspired many prominent modern buildings to the other monuments that dot this city of the Sultans will be on our map as we wander about its bylanes.
