Around and within the concrete jungle that we inhabit are pockets that are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. This amazingly resilient biodiversity is fascinating to anyone who takes the time to stand and stare. And to encourage folks to do this more often, we are starting the Breakfree Birding trails in our backyard!

Pravin Subramaniam and Avinash Bhagat have very kindly agreed to lead these trails as the resident Biodiversity Experts at Breakfree. With a rich experience on the field, both are passionate about educating and spreading ideas of conservation among enthusiasts.

This weekend we kick off the session with a trail around Tungareshwar and Bassein Fort. On Saturday join us as we enter a lesser known wildlife sanctuary. This forest provides many opportunities to spot jungle birds, in the winter months of November to February.

The walk will be led by Mr. Pravin Subramanian, a project manager by profession with a keen eye for detail, be it numbers and trends or fur and feathers. He has traveled across the country, observing flora and fauna and has worked with government agencies on studying and conserving wildlife.

He is also the joint coordinator of the highly popular HSBC India Bird Races organized by naturalist Sunjoy Monga.

Interested? Here's the plan!

Meet up at Vasai Road Railway Station at 0700 hours on Saturday 1st Nov 2014.

After a quick chai head to Tungareshwar WLS and explore for about 2-3 hours. Pravin will orient all the participants on the importance of forest birds, their behaviour and also help identifying all the species.

Prior birding experience is not mandatory and one need not even be a birder to take part in this event. The idea is to introduce everyone to the wonderful biodiversity in our backyards.

One may carry a pair of binoculars but a notepad and a pen/pencil are mandatory. Along with a cap, dark/dull shaded clothes, comfortable walking shoes are necessary.

Note: This is an ecologically sensitive area so littering, smoking, consumption of alcohol or narcotics is strictly prohibited.

All participants will be bound by the rules and regulations of the park and of Breakfree Journeys

Cost: Rs. 800 per person inclusive of breakfast, all internal transport to WLS and back to Vasai Road railway station and a whole lotta fun.

Only 8-12 participants will be allowed on the trail as this is just the right number for a birding trip.
