Yatri Sahyadri has organized a trip to the Velas, Ratnagiri in 23rd & 24thMarch, 2013 (22nd Night) as a part of the Velas Turtle Festival, to watch the emergence of Olive Ridley Turtle hatch-lings from the nests.
Some basic information about the trip and the location:
Velas is a small village in the northern most tip of Ratnagiri District, off the western coast ofMaharashtra about 250 kms south of Mumbai and about 20kms south of Harihareshwar the Kashi of the West a major place of pilgrimage. Besides, Harihareshwar is a popular beach resort with two beaches, one to the north and the other to the south of the temple.

SCHEDULE:
Day 1 – 22/03/2013.
22.00hrs: Bus departs from near Magathane Depot, opp. TATA STEEL LTD., Borivali East on the Western Express Highway,
22.30hrs: Pickup from Oberoi Mall Goregaon East,
23.00hrs: Pickup from Bisleri Junction, Andheri East,
23.30hrs:Pickup from Sion Station.
DAY 2 – 23/03/2013.
00.30hrs: Pick up from Vashi, opp. Railway Station on theSion Panvel Highway
01.00hrs: Fuel Stop,
Travel time to Velas approximately 5 hours from Panvel
06.00hrs: Reach Velas village, check in at the Nijsure residence our base for the next 2 days in the village,
06.30hrs: Leave for the nesting site on the beach. Hatchlings are released at sharp 7 am.
7.00am: The hatchlings are released.
08.00hrs: Come back to Nijsure home. Freshen up, bathe and have breakfast.
10.00hrs: Leave for the beach. A small beach cleaning activity is undertaken. Subject to approvals from local authorities/organisations.
12.00hrs: Come back for lunch and rest for an afternoon siesta/nap.
16.30hrs: Evening tea/snacks.
17.00hrs: Leave for the beach for some leisure activities stroll on the beach and photography.
17.40hrs: Gather at the nesting site.2nd batch of hatchlings is released at 18.00hrs sharp, again subject to emergence of hatchlings.
20.00hrs: A small documentary on the wildlife of Sahyadris is organized by the Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra, followed by a question and answer session,
21.00hrs: Dinner,
22.00hrs: Retire for the day.
Day 3 – 24 /03/2013.
06.00hrs: Wake up call.
06.30hrs: Leave for the nesting site on the beach. Hatchlings are released at sharp 7 am.
7.00am: The hatchlings are released.
07.30hrs: Come back to Nijsure home. Freshen up, bathe and have breakfast.
09.30hrs: Leave for Mumbai.
If we have enough time on hand and tides are in our favour we will also be arranging a visit along with a “pradakshina” of the theHarihareshwar Kalbhairav Temple and a visit to Shrivardhan Beach
11.00hrs: Visit theHarihareshwar Kalbhairav Temple ,
13.00hrs: Lunch,
14.00hrs: Leave forShrivardhan Beach
15.00hrs: Leave for Mumbai,
17.30hrs: Break for tea and snacks en route.
We will reach Mumbai in about 6-9 hours subject to traffic conditions as most weekenders will be heading back to Mumbai during that time.
Charges: Rs. 2000/- per person.
Maximum participants – 25 only.

Travel by private vehicle,
2 Morning breakfast/tea (Saturday & Sunday),
2 Lunch (Saturday & Sunday),
2 Evening snacks/tea (Saturday & Sunday),
1 Dinner(Saturday only).
Here is a list of all the things that we need to carry for the trek:
1. Your dinner for Friday night,
2. Waterproof/Water resistant haversack to put in all the things to be carried.
3. Water minimum 3Ltrs,
4. Camera (Optional), Avoid wearing Gold and other jewelry (at own risk)
5. Please carry enough clothes for 2 days, towels, personal medicines, etc.
6. Sunscreen lotion/cream,
7. One good pair of waterproof/resistant footwear. Slippers, floaters, etc. allowed.
8. Sleeping bag, shawl if needed can be carried, but no bedding, blankets need to be carried,
KINDLY NOTE:
This is an leisure trip and not a trek.
We will stay in a village home, so don’t expect any luxuries.
Separate rooms on multiple sharing basis have been arranged for men and women with hot water and western style WC.
The emergence of hatch-lings from the nest is subject to climatic conditions and the number of hatch-lings left in the nests. We don’t assure of emergence of any hatch-lings.
The most probable dates are post the 05th of March, 2013 once the warmth of summer sets in.
