Raigad is situated in Raigad district near Mahad on Mumbai Goa highway. Height of this fort is 2900 ft above sea level.
Renowned Historian Shree Appa Parab will be with us to explore history of Raigad
History: Raigad was earlier known as Rairi. In the 12th century Rairi was ruled by Shirke-Palegar family. After changing several hands, it was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from Chandrarao More in 1656 AD and decided to form it as capital of Maratha Kingdom. Shivaji Maharaj renamed it as Raigad.
Raigad is one amongst the important forts of Marathas as it was the first Capital of Maratha Kingdom. Raigad is strategically important as it is situated on an irregular wedge-shaped mass of rock, detached from the main body of Sahyadri Mountains by a deep valley and inaccessible from three sides. The fort is spread across 5.12 sq.kms hill-top plateau and has three main points Hirakani in the west, Takamak in the north and Bhavani in the east.
